Robert Reich – What’s the Real Reason Democrats Won’t Protect Democracy? IMO it really isn’t fair to fault a President – even a Republican President – for not doing something that only Congress can do. (Faulting a Presidential candidate for promising something that only Congress can do is defiitely on the table, though.)

SOUND OFF! 7/31/21

You have probably head that Cleveland’s baseball franchise is changing its name from the Indians to the Guardians. Progressives are hailing this as an acknowledgement that Native Americans/First Nations peoples are human beings, entitled to dignity, not caricatures to be stitched on a sports uniform. People have been demanding this change for years.

I like the choice of “Guardians” because it is uniquely Cleveland, an homage to the Art Deco Guardians of Traffic on the Hope Memorial Bridge. Other names suggested included the “Rockers” and “Rock” because the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is located in Cleveland. “Spiders” was suggested since Cleveland once had a team bearing that name. I would have been happy with any of those, but I’m glad they selected “Guardians.” Besides, there will be inevitable references to the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Now right-wingers are losing their feces – over a sports mascot. A SPORTS MASCOT, y’all. Who are “snowflakes” now? You howl about knee-jerk liberals, while your conservative knees jerk just as readily, if not even more so. China is threatening war, the global environment is going to hell in a handbasket, and you wig out over a baseball team changing its name. Since when is it bad to realize that reducing certain ethnicities and races to silly team symbols is disrespectful? Do you view this change as wokeness or political correctness run amok? Do you fear a slippery slope that will call for all human-based team names to change? Do you lose bladder control at the thought of the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, and the like having to find new designations?

The Washington Redskins finally agreed to change their appellation; it will be interesting to learn what name Washington’s franchise, which is now going by the dull-as-dishwater “Washington Football Team,” selects after next season. Ideas ranging from Griffins to Firefighters have come from a variety of sources. Whatever the decision is, let us consider just how far we want to go with eliminating offensive mascots. Where do you draw the line?

Yesterday was definitely hot. It is supposed to cool down today. I certainly hope so.

Official White House Document: National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism
Quote – Too often over the past several years, American communities have felt the wrenching pain of domestic terrorism. Black church members slaughtered during their bible study in Charleston. A synagogue in Pittsburgh targeted for supporting immigrants. A gunman spraying bullets at an El Paso Walmart to target Latinos. It goes against everything our country strives to stand for in the world, and it poses a direct challenge to America’s national security, our democracy, and our national unity. This National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism lays out a comprehensive approach to addressing the threat while safeguarding bedrock American civil rights and civil liberties – values that make us who we are as a nation.
Click through for full document. Yes, it’s long. It is also an official document, which mkes it a benchmark for wht to expect from government and how to evaluste how governmen is doing. Something to download or bookmark.

The Hill – Pelosi calls on CDC to extend eviction moratorium unilaterally
Quote – As House Democratic leaders struggle to find enough party support to extend an eviction moratorium, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is advocating a temporary fix, urging the Biden administration to act unilaterally to help the nation’s most vulnerable renters. The Speaker said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which has instituted a ban on evictions through the end of Saturday, should extend the deadline further, giving House Democrats more time to codify the extension in legislation.

HuffPost – ‘Comically Minimal Ego-Stroking’: Inside The Bumble Takedown Of A Violent Capitol Rioter
Quote – A citywide curfew was in place, and she could hear the helicopters hovering in the sky. Outside her window, “Claire” could see Trump supporters streaming back from the Capitol to a hotel near her home, carrying their flags and wearing “Make America Great Again” hats. “I was watching on the news and seeing everyone walk back,” Claire told HuffPost. “It felt kind of useless for me to be that close and not kind of do anything proactive about it.”

Bill is back from vacation (he said he was taking off the month of July, and he pretty nearly did.) This allows me to post a lst post on him and provide information for anyone who wants to follow him on your own. Here is his official website  As with Sam, I prefer the “Videos” page to the “Home” page because it shows more videos without scrolling, but it’s easy to get there from here. In the past, there have usually started to be video clips available as early as 9:00 Mountain (8:00 Pacific, 10:00 Central, 11:00 Eastern, and IIRC 4 am Saturday GMT, except it’s not called GMT any more. Sigh.) Tonight, however it took almost 2 hours before they were all up – and, oddly, the Monologue was the last to appear. That may just be getting back ito the groove from vacation. But don’t be discouraged if they aren’t there right away. Keep checking, or check the next day, whichever works best with your schedule.

So this will be the last Bill post here.

Monologue: Return of the Mask

Eric Adams: Running Against a Movement

Simone Biles vs. The Asshole Division

New Rule: The Woke Olympics

While last Tuesday’s gut-wrenching testimony of trauma, terrorism, treason and tears by Police Officers Gonell, Fanone, Hodges and Dunn might not be enough to change the minds of many in the GQP – it did a great deal to restore my faith in humanity.

Consequently, I believe it’s worthwhile to extend that good feeling with today’s offering.

[Editor’s Note: You might want to keep a tissue close by.]

A video taken by someone with the handle “McLiez” and posted on Facebook has been viewed over a million times and shared over 170,000 times – and deservedly so!

It’s just a minute-long clip taken of cars stuck in traffic.  But a driver in one of the cars (believed to be in the Philippines) captured the most heart-warming video of a small boy holding a cloth that he most likely uses to clean car windows to earn some money.  He approaches a stopped car with another small boy in the back.  The child in the car rolls down his window and starts chatting with the boy.  He then gives the child in the street a small toy he has so he could play with it, and the small boy is clearly delighted!

As the boys play with each other, the one in the car then gives him a large dirt-digging excavator toy to play with.  When the child in the street later tries to return the toys, the boy in the car refuses to take them back.

Not sure what to do, but wanting to show his gratitude, the boy in the street goes to get a bag of snacks that he shares with the boy in the car.  As the traffic starts moving again, the two boys wave to each other.

[NOTE: This link to a Facebook posting is NOT the original Facebook posting by McLiez, but one from the “India Times”.  I’ve never belonged to Facebook and I’m not sure if the original is even available anymore.  But I thought I should give Facebook some type of credit for posting it.]

BUT I did find a YouTube video of it:

In the same spirit I thought it’d be worthwhile to share a “Bonus” video of the kindness of one child shown to another, when a little boy comes to the aid of a clearly distraught autistic child on the first day of school.

I doubt children this age know what “compassion” or “empathy” even means.  But more importantly, they know how to show it and share it with their fellow human beings.

The Hill – https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/565378-the-17-republicans-who-voted-to-advance-the-senate-infrastructure-bill
Quote – The vote — the first of several steps expected before the Senate decides whether or not to ultimately pass the bill—comes one week after all Republicans blocked a similar move, arguing that Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) was rushing the process as senators tried to finalize their agreement.
Click through for list. Some of these not only surprised me but made me think there’s something fishy (nothing new with the GQP)

Mother Jones (Kevin Drum) – The Real Source of America’s Rising Rage
Quote – [T]he past couple of decades have seen a steady increase in the belief among white people—particularly Republicans—that anti-white bias is a serious problem. Fox News has stoked this fear almost since the beginning, culminating this year in Tucker’s full-throated embrace of the white supremacist “replacement theory” and the seemingly 24/7 campaign against critical race theory and its alleged impact on white schoolkids. This is certainly not all that Fox News does, but it’s a big part of its pitch, and it fits hand in glove with Trump’s appeal to white racism.
Click through for his reasoning. Kevin is another who’s pretty sharp. And Fox is certainly huge. But even media could not create racism, white nationalism, the Great Replacement paranoia, etc. out of thin air. It can only weaponize them by bring ing them out of hiding.

BuzzFeed News – A Judge Questioned If Capitol Rioters Are Getting Off Too Easy For “Terrorizing Members Of Congress”
Quote – Howell in the end accepted Griffith’s guilty plea, but, like Walton, put the government and defense through several paces before she did. She asked whether the government was concerned that an agreement involving a low-level misdemeanor was enough not only to deter Griffith from participating in a similar event in the future but also the broader universe of the hundreds of people who descended on the Capitol that day. The circumstance that led to the Jan. 6 insurrection, a presidential election, happens every four years, the judge noted.
Click through for story. Of course it’s Beryl Howell – not that she’s the only one with a head on her shoulders, or the only one who is outspoken, but she’s certainly one of a few.
