WWWendy is due shortly, and we have a full slate of tasks to finish.  This is my only article today.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:01 (average 4:58).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube: Youngbloods, the – Get together (audio original)

Ah… the memories. The Republican Reich stole the love. It’s time to take it back! RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: The comedian Rosie O’Donnell will narrate the audiobook of Robert Mueller’s long-awaited report, the special counsel’s office confirmed on Saturday.

Explaining the selection of O’Donnell, a spokesperson for Mueller said, “Donald Trump has complained about how much this report has cost, and Rosie has agreed to narrate it for free. In fact, she offered to pay us to let her narrate it.”

Speaking to reporters, O’Donnell called the job of narrating Mueller’s report “the acting job of a lifetime.”

“I never thought I’d get the chance to play so many twisted characters,” she said. “I mean, when else am I going to get to be both Ivanka and Jared? People are gonna freaking love listening to this in the car.”

Wow, Andy! Let’s pipe that into Trump’s solitary cell, and turn up the volume. RESIST!!

From The Nation: It’s 2019, and the Democratic Party is finally starting to energize voters. Gone are calls for cutting Social Security or one-upping Republicans in games of tax-cutting or warmongering. In their place are transformational ideas like Medicare for All, universal childcare, and a Green New Deal. Democratic candidates and elected officials are finally hearing the needs and wishes of their supporters, and acting accordingly.

Now it’s time for those of us in the consulting field, who work to help elect these leaders, to follow suit.

While it’s not well-known outside the political class, many consultants who advise campaigns are often working for corporate clients at the same time—and all too frequently, these clients interests’ directly oppose the goals of any progressive coalition. Those working both sides of the street include some of the most senior aides from the Obama administration, and as well as advisers to both the Clinton and Sanders campaigns. From opposing progressive taxation to fighting for deregulation, working for corporate clients means pushing an agenda most progressives would consider a non-starter were it espoused by a political candidate.

Many progressives recently criticized Bill Burton, a top Democratic consultant and former Obama aide, for working on former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz’s independent presidential bid. Critics rightly worried that by helping Schultz direct massive resources against the Democratic nominee, Burton could swing the election over to Donald Trump. Besides, Schultz’s agenda of opposing higher taxes on multimillionaires or Medicare for All is a direct attack on the progressive movement.

I could not agree more. Corporate double-dipping by Democratic consultants is both anti-democratic and anti-Democratic. RESIST!!

(Maybe it's Saturday SOMEWHERE in the world)

It’s been an unusually busy week for me, so I’m just pulling a few out of the air, hopefully for your amusement.  And a couple of Public Service Announcements

Stop me if you’ve heard these before …

Oprah, Obama, Trump and a high school girl were traveling on a plane together.  The engines start to sputter badly, and then they saw the two pilots parachuting out.

The four looked at each other in bewilderment and concern – because they saw there were only three parachutes left.

Oprah steps forward and tells the girl: "I'll take one of the parachutes, and I'll build a school for girls in your honor.  It'll benefit thousands of young women like you …" And she jumped out.

Trump lumbered forward announcing, "Give me one of those parachutes!  In case you didn’t realize, not only am I the best President America has ever had, I’m also the smartest person alive!"  He clumsily straps it on and jumps out the plane.

Obama looks at the girl and said "As you know, I have two lovely daughter – and I believe children are our future.  I want you to have the last parachute."

The girl replies: "No, we're good.  There are two parachutes remaining. ‘The smartest person alive’ took my backpack."

Just a reminder of what his Wharton professor said of him:

And Chancellor Merkel can provide proof:

But there’s an easy explanation for Twitler’s toddler-like “intellect” AND actions:

So it’s not a bit surprising that his Trumpkins are equally … hmmm … seriously IQ-challenged:

According to a recent CNN poll, Donald Trump's approval rating is 38 percent, which is the same percentage of people who think "collusion" is when two pickup trucks run into each other.

On the “Good News” front, it looks like Mueller Special Counsel’s Report is imminent.

And yet Twitler continues to try and claim “No collusion”.  But I trust Mueller will be able to connect the dots – shouldn't be too hard:

And wouldn’t it be odd if this were true:

Reporter 1: "Donald Trump died yesterday, so they buried him."

Reporter 2: "Are you sure he was dead?"

Reporter 1: "Well, he said he wasn't, but you know how he lies."

And with 2020 approaching and the field of excellent Democratic candidates growing, this is how it must seem to Donnie:

SERIOUS PSAs

[1] Informed Delivery Provided by USPS

Informed Delivery provides eligible residential consumers with a digital preview of their household's incoming mail scheduled to arrive soon.  Users can view greyscale images of the exterior, address side of incoming letter-sized mail pieces (not the inside contents) via email or an online dashboard. Check out our FAQs for more details.

I set mine up to come as an email, and the notification typically arrives before 9:00 AM.

Not only is it a nice feature, but it prevents someone from grabbing your option to use it.  There have been reported cases that someone signed up as another person, then monitored when packages were arriving in order to steal them.

You can see it’s a USPS address:

https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action

And the FAQ page:

https://faq.usps.com/s/article/Informed-Delivery-The-Basics

[2] Opt Out of Receiving Prescreened or Pre-Approved Credit Card and Insurance Offers

You can fill out the online form (or call) to opt out of receiving those annoying credit card and insurance offers that are pre-approved.  It helps protect your identity to some degree.

I did the 5-year option, because the permanent option requires you to mail back some form.  And I did NOT provide my SSN – but did provide my birthdate.  Seems like that was enough info to process me, because I got a confirmation notice.

You can see it’s a government website:

https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0148-prescreened-credit-and-insurance-offers

Which will direct you to here to complete:

https://www.optoutprescreen.com/

ADDENDUM

I would strongly suggest that when you sign up at BOTH sites you enter your LEGAL name.

For example: If your legal name is "Robert" – enter "Robert"NOT "Bob" or "Rob"

If your legal name is "Roberta" – enter "Roberta"NOT "Bobbi"

I first entered my common name on the "Informed Delivery" rather than my legal name used on the IRS forms – and got rejected.

But entereing my legal name solved the problem.

CAVEAT: Dependiing on how long you have lived at the address you enter, you might still have to enter your SSN to qualify.

PLUS if you select the "Permanent Opt Out" – they might be more restrictive.

It’s that time of week again, so here are three excellent video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: If You See Salsa, Say Something

Dang! I put salsa on my rice. Is the caravan invading my mind?

Congressman Adam Schiff

Adam is spot-on. If there are Republican Reps that recognize the evil of the Republican Reich but fear the rabid sheeple, they need to grow a pair and do the right thing.  I’m not holding my breath.

New Rule: Prime Real Estate

I’d rather have anal bleaching and Steve King. I agree that we need to invest in bringing jobs to red areas.

Bill was hilarious!

It’s a chilly day here in the CatBox.  When we upgraded to WordPress 5.1 it was partially incompatible with our comment editor.  I tried to fix it by deactivating and reactivating it, after which the plugin would not even load.  So I reverted to our old CKEditor, which I had uninstalled.  The compatibility issues with that editor appear to have been fixed.  Let me know if there are problems.  Tomorrow is a WWWendy day, and we will be very busy.  So please expect no more than a Personal Update with no links messages on Care2.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:45 (average 5:47).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Media Matters Channel): For years, right-wing figures have warned about “civil war”

Barf Bag Alert!!

This means that, if the Republican Reich cannot stay in power through election theft, they want to take power violently. This is how they use fear to brainwash their sheeple to be violent. RESIST!!

From Alternet: It’s one thing to oppose the grandiose “Green New Deal” as gratuitously imprecise or for its full-throated attack on all-things-ozone and carbon release in our global community.

It feels like something totally other to oppose narrow regulations that could advance the campaign to swap out incandescent light bulbs for light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, a small, practical step that, multiplied into the millions, would passively remove a healthy chunk of energy-eating pollution over time.

Actually, I was surprised to see a recent editorial about all this in The Washington Post,  which argued that “Of all the counterproductive policy campaigns conservatives have waged in recent years, among the most irrational has been their war on the federal government’s efforts to update the light bulb.”

The use of the word light is enough to stampede the Republican Reich. They prefer darkness to cover their crimes. RESIST!!

From NY Times: The Trump administration announced on Friday that it will bar organizations that provide abortion referrals from receiving federal family planning money, a step that could strip millions of dollars from Planned Parenthood and direct it toward religiously-based, anti-abortion groups.

The new federal rule is almost certain to be challenged in court. Clinics will be able to talk to patients about abortion, but not where they can get one. And clinics will no longer have to counsel women on all reproductive options, including abortion, a change that will make anti-abortion providers eligible for funding

Not only is this a violation of women’s right to choose, but also, the provision that funds faith-based “providers” violates the Establishment Clause. RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #158

Posted by at 9:51 am  Politics
Feb 232019

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as "unceasing," "grudging," and "vengeful destruction."

Not for the first time, I want to make an email the foundation of my case today. The email is from Common Dreams, an organization which does some good work of investigative journalism, and also of analysis. (Bill Moyers is one person who supports it and its model.) It works to treat facts as facts and to analyze through a lens of progressive values. Like Politics Plus, it's been looking into the politics of disinformation. Like Politics Plus, it wants everyone aware of the disinformation campaigns already in place.

We've seen it before. Sinister forces—recognizing the jig is up—fall back on one of the great strategies used throughout history to maintain power and privilege.

Reporting on Common Dreams today reveals that already, with the presidential primary season in the U.S. still over a year way, there is a coordinated "divide and conquer" effort underway with the explicit goal of turning progressives against one another in hopes of diminishing their collective power.

One of the analysts who studied the online phenomenon—mostly taking place on social media—dubbed it 'Operation Divide the Left.' It almost makes it sound silly, but with so much at stake, such efforts are anything but funny.

And it's not just on social media. Powerful interests—with the corporate media outlets they control, the think tanks they fund, and the lawmakers they have bought and paid for—have long been able to set the parameters of acceptable debate and moved swiftly to pit one struggling group against another.

Politico reviewed data from Twitter "and other platforms" extensively, and then interviewed a number of data scientists and digital campaign strategists, and came up with an apparent dual purpose for the activity: 1) undermine all potential Democratic Presidential candidates, and 2) sow discord and chaos within the huge creaky disjointed machine which is the Democratic Presidential primary process.

A certain number of accounts were identified, turning out to be the same core group which anchored a wide-scale influence campaign in 2018. Gee. Who could have guessed.

Click through to find out which candidates are being targeted the most, if you wish.  (Spoiler:  all the ones pictured on this page.)

Moving on, also like Politics Plus, Common Dreams wants to bring people, not just progressives, together, to focus on what we have in common, to prevent division among us – division which, though it may originate from outside, can get in between us and turn us into splinters.

From those clamoring for a Green New Deal that centers racial and economic justice to those declaring without reservation that healthcare is a human right, we know these are unifying demands. Those calling for an end to endless war stand on the right side of history as do those who say no child should be torn from a parent's arms, no eligible voter should be kept from the ballot box, no worker denied the dignity of a living wage, and no woman told what to with her own body.

These values—and of course much more—are what unite progressives and they even unite people who don't identify as such. These are human values….

Well, that's easy to say. It's less easy to do.

However, one of the candidates (is it a coincidence she is also THE single most targeted candidate over at least the past month?) has just provided a model which can and should be used, not only by all Democratic candidates, not only by all Democratic politicians, but also by all Democrats and all progressive voters who see voting Democratic as the way to cleaning up Republican messes and, hopefully, moving forward.

Here's an excerpt from another email, this one from Senator Kamala Harris, which speaks for itself:

Earlier this week, Senator Bernie Sanders announced that he is running for president. I want to let you know: I am excited to welcome my friend and colleague to the growing field of incredible Democrats who have entered this race.

I also very much look forward to the coming months when each candidate will share their ideas for the future of our country and make their case directly to the American people. Because, at the end of the day, that is what this is all about: the people.

Wow. It actually chokes me up.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, please help spread this attitude far and wide among progressives, be they elected officials, candidates, or voters. If the attitude doesn't take, frankly, the appearance of it would do. If we all have to fake sincerity, then help us all learn to fake sincerity convincingly! Because anything less will weaken us, and could destroy us.

The Furies and I will be back.

Cross posted to Care2 HERE.

Rachel Maddow Special Report

Posted by at 11:27 am  Politics
Feb 222019

Last night, Rachel Maddow published a special report on her show.  Between the two clips available, there are over 35 minutes of video coverage.  Most of what she revealed is brand new to me, and I found it way to fascinating not to pass it on.  The history of the DOJ policy not to indict a sitting President, or as applies today, Resident, is particularly relevant.

0222Maddow

In a special report Thursday Night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow dove deep into the Justice Department history and the origins of the policy that says sitting presidents can’t be indicted.

As part of her research for her podcast “Bag Man,” she and her team found that the department’s policy was first conceived of in response to the crimes of Vice President Spiro Agnew. Because of President Richard Nixon’s Watergate crisis, Attorney General Elliot Richardson was fearful of a situation in which Agnew might ascend to the presidency even while an investigation into his corruption ramped up. So Richardson sought an opinion from legal counsel about whether a vice president could be indicted.

Maddow reported that the conclusion of this work, that a vice president could be indicted but a president could not be, was specifically designed in mind for dealing with the Agnew situation. It rested on “shaky” grounds, citing no constitutional provisions, simply saying that the burden of the president’s office required that the commander in chief not face indictment. Maddow also interviewed J.T. Smith, who worked in the Justice Department when that reasoning was crafted who said: “Its purpose was to allow indictment and removal of Agnew and not to serve as the ‘last word’ on indictability of the president.”

He added: “It would be timely and appropriate for the Justice Department and Robert Mueller to reconsider the shaky policy regarding indictability of a sitting president first formulated 45 years ago.”… [emphasis added]

Here are the clips:

Fmr VP Spiro Agnew Sought Saudi Millions To Fight ‘Zionists’: Document (20 min.)

DOJ Policy On Indicting A President Has Weak Basis In 1973 Memo (15 min.)

So the DOJ policy about indicting a sitting Resident is based on an incidental aside, not an intent to formulate policy. It was never meant to serve as the last word on indicting a Resident.

Therefore, out of deference to Richardson, we should indict Pence first.  Then we should indict Trump!

It’s a chilly day in Portland, and I feel very tired, so please pardon my brevity.  TGIF!

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:03 (average 5:10).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Media Matters Channel): Fox News has spent years promoting claims of a “coup” against Donald Trump

Barf Bag Alert!!

Is it any wonder that Sheeples’ ideas are moronic, given the onslaught of BS from the Republican Reichsministry of Propaganda, Faux Noise? RESIST!!

From YouTube (CNN Channel): Police: Smollett took advantage of racism for career

I suppose I’d better weigh-in, lest it appear that I’m evading it. Race traitor Jussie Smollett no longer deserves to call himself a Democrat. Since he is acting like a Republican, he has become a Republican. RESIST!!  RETRACTION!  Jussie Smollett has been cleared.  I apologize.

From Washington Post: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and her fellow House Democrats just introduced a resolution to terminate President Trump’s national emergency. In coming days, the resolution will likely pass the House, setting in motion a process that will force a Senate vote on it. Either Senate Republicans will side with Trump, or they’ll pass the measure, after which Trump will veto it.

This represents a small challenge to Trump’s corruption and lies — to his corruption of our institutions and political system with autocratic and authoritarian conduct, and to the deep rot of bad faith at the core of his willingness to declare a national emergency to build his wall based on false pretenses and invented metrics.

The move probably won’t succeed in terminating the emergency. But it points to something we need to see a lot more of: discussion of concrete proposals and actions designed to fortify our institutions and democracy against Trump’s ongoing degradations of them, and to restore confidence in them once Trump is gone.

I fully support this move. If nothing else, it forces Republicans, who have claimed it was Trump, not them, to go on record or be exposed. RESIST!!

Here is the one hundred forty-ninth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner is a Republican USCG Lieutenant Christopher Paul Hasson. He is so honored for white nationalism, Ammosexuality, and a domestic terrorist plan to start a race war and establish a white homeland.

0221Hasson

A 49-year-old Coast Guard lieutenant charged with stockpiling weapons and drugs is being described as a “domestic terrorist” who was planning “to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country,” according to court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Maryland on Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors say Christopher Paul Hasson, a self-described white nationalist living in Silver Spring, Md., was amassing firearms since at least 2017, while cultivating plans to launch a widespread attack on prominent Democratic lawmakers, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and several high-profile television anchors from MSNBC and CNN.

Court documents indicate Hasson espoused extremist and white supremacist views for years — aspiring to establish a “white homeland” — and say he is a “domestic terrorist bent on committing acts dangerous to human life that are intended to affect government conduct.”

“I am dreaming of a way to kill every last person on earth,” Hasson wrote in a draft email dated June 2, 2017, that was uncovered by investigators, according to the court records.

Throughout the email, addressed to “friends … Acquaintances more likely,” he contemplates the most effective methods to “cause complete destruction” by unleashing a biological attack on the public, followed by contamination of food supplies.

Much blood will have to be spilled to get whitey off the couch. … They will die as will the traitors who actively work toward our demise,” he wrote disdainfully…. [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NPR>

Here’s a short CNN video:

Hasson’s manifesto indicates than his inspiration is Anders Behring Breivik.   Breivik is a Norwegian Republican terrorist, who killed 77, including many children.  I previously wrote about how Breivik had US Republican connections. The Koch Brothers financed his activities through ADA.  I wonder which Prominent Republicans financed Hasson’s arsenal.  If I knew, they would also get a parade.
