Hey, Ivanka – Where’s Your Pa?

Hiding in the Bunker! HA! HA! HA!

Turning off all the lights and heading down to the basement to avoid Trick-or-Treaters might work on Halloween. But when the country you’re supposed to be leading is facing a global Pandemic that has killed over 100,000 Americans, leading to near Depression level unemployment and economic catastrophe – hiding in a bunker will simply not work in trying to ignore the racial chaos that you yourself helped create.

And yet the man who thinks a mask makes him look “weak” is now cowering … errr, I mean “inspecting” the White House Bunker.

In fact VP Pence snapped a candid shot of him giving the floor a close-up examination:

It’s clear that this new “Bunker Boy” sobriquet is driving him crazy! So let’s give him a shove in that direction!

In heading down to the Bunker and turning out the lights in the White House, Trump was able to set a couple of records:

And who could imagine that the Simpsons TV show would be able to actually predict history? Other than for a president’s funeral, the lights of the White House remain lit all the time … except when Bunker Boy is cowering.

Fortunately, Melania was there to help him down those scary stairs …

And he at least did bring his Bunker Inspector hat with him …

But his only real concern was his own personal safety …

In fact, here he is peeking out to see if the coast is clear …

Looks like we’re not the only ones who got a good laugh from Bunker Boy’s cowardice …

And I think we can all imagine John McCain voicing these closing thoughts up in heaven …

BONUS

I’ve seen what’s described as a great song parody of Bunker Boy. Obviously I’ll have to take other folks’ word for it – but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it:

Trump*/GOP Losing Ground

The more time goes on, the better things look for Democrats in November, as criminal Fuhrer Trump* could not be doing more to sabotage himself and the Republican Reich, it he tried.  Nevertheless, we cannot use this as an excuse for complacency.

0605Polls

…Start here: Trump got 306 electoral votes in his 2016 win. Now, consider these 2020 scenarios (all calculations made via 270towin.com):

* If Trump loses Texas (and wins everywhere else he won in 2016), he loses to Biden, 270 electoral votes to 268 electoral votes.

* If Trump loses Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (and wins everywhere else he won in 2016), he loses to Biden 278 to 260.

* If Trump loses Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania (and wins everywhere else he won in 2016), he loses to Biden 279 to 259.

* If Trump loses Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin (and wins everywhere else he won in 2016), he loses to Biden 276 to 262.

* If Trump loses Arizona, Ohio and Wisconsin (and wins everywhere else he won in 2016), he loses to Biden 271 to 267.

The point here is not to say any of these electoral map scenarios are locked in. After all, we are still 152 days away from the November 3 election. (And, yes, I counted.)

Rather, they are to note that Biden, as of right now, has a WHOLE lot of different paths to 270 electoral votes, while Trump has a dwindling number. And of course, the polls on released on Wednesday don’t even deal with potential trouble spots for Trump in Florida, North Carolina and Georgia — all of which he won in 2016…  [emphasis added]

From ProPublica: Police culture can be insular and tough to penetrate. But I’ve been surprised by how often it’s possible, though time consuming, to expose important issues by requesting and examining records and data from police departments and other government agencies and engaging citizens and key leaders. So here are five techniques concerned citizens, journalists and policymakers can use to examine police conduct in their communities.

1. Understand the policies and laws that govern police conduct.

If you’re alarmed by what you saw in Minneapolis, or other recent incidents of apparent police misconduct, the first step is to find out if the agency in question has a written policy on the use of force. Does the policy dictate when officers should or shouldn’t use force? What tactics are they allowed to use? Is there any rule against choking a suspect?

It’s important to know if the officers involved were following the policies and procedures that are supposed to guide their behavior. Police actions that strike an onlooker as inappropriate may actually be within a department’s rules. It’s possible the rules themselves are inconsistent with best practices elsewhere.

Ask the department for its policies on the practices that concern you, like restraining suspects or the use of pepper spray or Tasers. You may also need to request rules set by a county or state authority. Ask for written copies. You may be required to file a formal public records request, which I will describe below. And if there is no existing written policy, that might be something worth questioning itself.

If you’re having trouble understanding a policy, try running it by an attorney, academic, elected official or a journalist in your community.

How I did it: I did a deep dive into policies about drug testing after a police captain was killed in a car crash in 2016, and I exposed that he was drunk and on drugs at the time. I spoke to his chief and learned their department didn’t have a policy for random drug testing. I wondered why that was the case and looked to the state attorney general’s office, which sets many police rules. The rules allowed departments to choose whether they wanted to do random testing, and my reporting identified more than 100 that did not. After our story, the state attorney general mandated random drug testing for cops across the state.

I included one of five ways YOU can help hold police accountable for criminal Republican behavior. Please click through for the other four.  It’s worth the read, and you need to know it.  RESIST!!

From Alternet: New York Times columnist Paul Krugman on Friday warned that it’s wrong to compare President Donald Trump to President Richard Nixon, on the grounds that Trump is far worse and more dangerous.

Krugman acknowledges that there are some similarities between Trump and Nixon, such as their willingness to use racial grievance to gain power and their cavalier attitude toward obeying the law.

But Krugman thinks that the biggest difference between Trump and Nixon is that the Republican Party of 2020 is not the same as the Republican Party that pushed Nixon out in 1974…

…“The point is that today’s Republican Party wouldn’t object to a Trumpian power grab, even if it amounted to a military coup,” he writes. “On the contrary, the party would cheer it on.”

The Republican Reich, aka the Fifth Reich, has elections with predetermined results.  They exist for show only. If a military coup is needed to bring it about, Republicans are fine with that.  RESIST!!

Good Dog, Mad Dog!

Back on 12/2016, criminal Fuhrer Trump* appointed Marine General James “Mad Dog” Mattis as Secretary of Defense.  Although the appointment was illegal, I questioned opposing it, in the hope that Mattis would speak truth to power and honor his military oath above loyalty to criminal Fuhrer Trump*.  I published an article, entitled “Is Mad Dog Such a Bad Dog?”.  It took a long time, but he is proving me right.

0604MadDog

James Mattis, the esteemed Marine general who resigned as secretary of defense in December 2018 to protest Donald Trump’s Syria policy, has, ever since, kept studiously silent about Trump’s performance as president. But he has now broken his silence, writing an extraordinary broadside in which he denounces the president for dividing the nation, and accuses him of ordering the U.S. military to violate the constitutional rights of American citizens.

“I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled,” Mattis writes. “The words ‘Equal Justice Under Law’ are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.” He goes on, “We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution.”…

…“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”

He goes on to contrast the American ethos of unity with Nazi ideology. “Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that ‘The Nazi slogan for destroying us … was “Divide and Conquer.” Our American answer is “In Union there is Strength.”’ We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis—confident that we are better than our politics.”… [emphasis added]

Ex-Defense Secretary Mattis condemns Trump as threat to constitution

Remembering that Mattis is as far right as I am left, if not farther, integrity demands that I acknowledge it, when what he says is actually true. In his analysis of the behavior of criminal Fuhrer Trump*, he could not be more spot-on!

From Crooks and Liars: The Frank Rizzo statue was removed from the Municipal Services Plaza overnight. You don’t have to be from Philadelphia to understand what this means to Philadelphians. Via the Daily Beast:

Rizzo, who served as police commissioner from 1967 to 1971 and mayor from 1972 to 1980, oversaw a legacy of police brutality in the city and of discrimination against minorities. In 1971, he publicly urged supporters to “Vote White.” NBC Philadelphia reports that a crew arrived just after midnight Wednesday to remove the statue from the steps of the city’s Municipal Services Building. Members of the National Guard reportedly surrounded the area as work began. Shortly before 2 a.m., a truck drove off with the statue. City mayor Jim Kenney posted a photo of the empty spot early Wednesday alongside the caption: “The statue represented bigotry, hatred, and oppression for too many people, for too long. It is finally gone.”

I remember Rizzo from the late 1960s, when I lived in New York and Atlantic City. I had family in Philly, so I was often there. On an asshole scale of one to ten, Rizzo was a real Republican!  RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Donald Trump may not want to believe it, but the evidence is beginning to mount around the nation that white supremacists and assorted far-right “Boogaloo Bois” are working overtime to leverage protests around the United States against police brutality in the wake of the George Floyd killing—not to merely join the protests, but to both inflict violence and property damage, as well as to threaten other communities with it, all in order to heighten political tensions around the protests.

The tactics vary: Some are showing up disguised as anarchists or sympathizers, while some are arriving fully armed, in camo and body armor, with the Hawaiian shirts signifying the far-right “Boogaloo” civil-war movement. Others are simply spreading false information on the Internet by posing as antifa and telling smaller suburban and exurban communities that hordes of ravening anarchists are about to descend on their communities and break all their windows—sending those communities into fits of paranoid overreaction.

Trump has been insistent that the violence in the streets has primarily been the work of antifa, while denying the presence of far-right extremists: “I don’t see any indication that there were any white supremest groups mixing in. This is an ANTIFA Organization,” he tweeted on Monday.

In fact, there is abundant evidence that, as The New York Times’ Neil McFarquar observed, the mix at the protests has involved a broad range of actors. And so far, according to The Nation, the FBI has found no indication of organized antifascist involvement in the protest violence.

Some so-called protestors are peacefully exercising their right to dissent. They are almost all Democrats. They are the ones criminal Fuhrer Trump* and the Republican Reich assault.  Some call themselves Antifa, but they are anarchists bent on creating chaos. Since chaos is a Republican tactic classifying these Republicans as Democrats is an error. Some are just looters. Republicans label them as Democrats too, but their primary motivation is greed, a Republican trait. Looters are Republicans too. And some are just MAGA Maniacs. They are obviously Republicans. Don’t be a Republican. Protest peacefully.  RESIST!!

The world is dealing with an unprecedented health crisis caused by a new virus. With new insights in the way COVID19 spreads, in the way the virus behaves and in the way to deal with the pandemic every day, it is now more important than ever to safeguard the information we share is accurate and fact-based. We have to inoculate ourselves against the fake news and misinformation that infect our newsfeeds and timelines at this crucial moment by fact-checking.

For the duration of the pandemic, I will try to give you an overview of the main issues in CoronaCheck, an Australian email newsletter with the latest from around the world concerning the coronavirus.*

KILL BILL (1)

Image source: Nicolas Zoumboulis/The Swanston Gazette

Despite coronavirus lockdown restrictions, hundreds of people have gathered at rallies across Australia to protest against 5G technology, mandatory vaccination and a host of other grievances.

Last weekend an event was organised in Melbourne by the Facebook page ‘MMAMV Australia‘ (Millions March Against Mandatory Vaccination), and information about the protests was shared within the Facebook group ‘99% unite Main Group “it’s us or them”‘, which has more than 58,000 members and is popular with conspiracy theorists who continue to repeat claims about supposed health risks linked to 5G technology and vaccines which have been debunked elsewhere.

But the Facebook event pages promoting these rallies also urged people to attend if they were concerned over a wide range of issues around COVID-19 Many attendees held signs that called for the arrest or death of Bill Gates, referring to the profusion of debunked claims and conspiracies about the Microsoft founder.

Some went so far as to claim the entire COVID-19 pandemic was a hoax, insisting that the virus was not “as bad as people have said”, with others adding: “We don’t even know anyone who has COVID-19, and if you’ve got doctors and nurses who have got no work to do, how real can it be?”

With efforts to develop a coronavirus vaccine continuing, the crowd voiced concerns around the “toxic” make-up of vaccines, claims which have been extensively researched and were recently marked by Full Fact as extremely misleading.

HAND SANITIZER

The use of hand sanitiser is the next best thing after washing your hands for 20 seconds, but a viral social media post purporting to show the aftermath of a car fire caused by an exploding bottle of hand sanitiser left out on a hot day may have some people worried.

However, Full Fact found that unless the car had reached temperatures of more than 350 degrees celsius, an external spark would be needed to ignite the sanitiser. Fact-checkers have also been unable to verify whether the fire damage in the photo was truly caused by exploding hand sanitiser.

CORONA CHILDREN

Facebook pages have fraudulently used an old photo of a sick baby in a post claiming the child had contracted the coronavirus after open heart surgery, according to fact-checkers at Lead Stories.

“This is baby Kyle. Few weeks ago He survived an opened heart surgery, And today the doctors confirm That he has Corona Virus,” the post states. “He only want you to help him out, by sharing this post to even if it’s 5 different Facebook groups so He can get many prayers as possible.”

This wasn’t the only photo used to stimulate Facebook likes amid the pandemic. Lead Stories also found an altered photo of a little girl, with a breathing tube, holding a sign with an accompanying caption that falsely suggested she had COVID-19. “Nobody wants to pray for me,” the sign says. “Please like my photo and pray.”

But in the original photo, shared on Reddit five months ago, the sign says: “It’s my last day of chemo!”

JAPAN WILL PAY FOR YOUR HOLIDAY

After Australian websites including 7News recently ran headlines declaring “Japan could pay for part of your post-coronavirus holiday”, fact-checkers at AFP warned that’s not the case. In reality, the subsidised travel plan being considered by Japan would only apply to Japanese residents travelling within the country, not to foreign visitors.

“Please note that the Go to Travel Campaign under consideration by the Japanese government is to stimulate domestic travel demand within Japan after the Covid-19 pandemic and only cover a portion of domestic travel expenses,” the Japan Tourism Agency said in a series of tweets

DOLLAR BILL (2)

“What’s bill gates and the Corona virus doing on Australian 10 dollar note?” a  post asks, alongside a photo of the note. “Many will just blow this off. Wake up, it’s been planned for years.”

Of course, the note, which has been in circulation since 2017, doesn’t show Bill Gates or the coronavirus as fact-checkers at AFP have (not surprisingly) discovered. According to the Reserve Bank of Australia the person depicted is Australian writer Mary Gilmore, whereas the circular illustration is a “designer’s interpretation of a Bramble Wattle”, a native Australian bush.

CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF BILL (3)

It’s not only Australia which can’t get enough of Bill Gates.

Mr. Gates did not “explain” how he injects GMOs (genetically modified organisms) into “little kids’ arms … right into the vein”, as one video purports to show. According to Lead Stories the clip had been taken and shared out of context.

“While this is a real video clip of [Mr Gates] speaking, he was making an analogy that he believes the safety of genetically modified crops should be tested before becoming part of the human diet just as vaccines are tested before being given to children.”

Meanwhile, Reuters found that neither Mr Gates, nor his wife Melinda, nor US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci nor the head of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, are set to appear before the “Human Rights Tribunal International” on charges of war crimes, as was claimed in a number of Facebook posts. “The posts purport to show a letter from the Human Rights Tribunal International, an organisation that does not exist either in the United States or elsewhere.”

If you’ve read most of the COVID-19 Fact and Fiction articles and you are wondering why yhey contain so many references to Bill Gates, his wife and his organization, this graph from the ABC showing Facebook mentions of “Bill Gates” and “vaccines” over recent months may give you some insight how both topics have been lightning rods for coronavirus conspiracies and misinformation.

Fact-checkers are having a very hard time just to keep up with these attacks on the Gates and with debunking them.

FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.

US President Donald Trump has been heavily criticised for playing golf over the recent Memorial Day long weekend as the country’s coronavirus death toll neared 100,000.

As usual, Mr Trump’s response was to point the finger at his predecessor and to accuse the media in a series of tweets of ignoring “all of the time [Barack] Obama spent on the golf course, often flying to Hawaii in a big, fully loaded 747, to play. What did that do to the so-called Carbon Footprint?”

Fact-checkers at CNN’s Facts First calculated that President Obama had played 98 rounds of golf up to the same point in his presidency as Mr Trump. By contrast, Mr Trump has spent time at a Trump golf course on 266 days of his term so far, according to CNN.

As to the biggest carbon footprint, Trump was again the clear winner. “Just Trump’s airplane trips to his Mar-a-Lago Club and residence in Florida, from which he has often taken a motorcade ride to a nearby golf course he owns, have required far more air travel than Obama’s once-a-year Hawaii vacations did through this point in the term.”

Things that don’t cure and/or prevent COVID-19

#28: Adding hot peppers (capsicum/chilli) to food
“Hot peppers in your food, though very tasty, cannot prevent or cure COVID-19.” — World Health Organisation

A few days ago cowardly criminal Fuhrer Trump had a case of buk-buk-buk-buk-bone spurs and hid in the White House bunker for fear that they might hurt him.  He had expected to cover it up, but someone leaked it to the press, and before he knew it, people all over the country were laughing at him.  The last times he felt that humiliated is when the existence of the pee-pee tape, became public and when people learned that Stormy spanked him.  He needed to put on a show to appear heroic.

0603Photo-Op

After a weekend of protests that led all the way to his own front yard and forced him to briefly retreat to a bunker beneath the White House, President Trump arrived in the Oval Office on Monday agitated over the television images, annoyed that anyone would think he was hiding and eager for action.

He wanted to send the military into American cities, an idea that provoked a heated, voices-raised fight among his advisers. But by the end of the day, urged on by his daughter Ivanka Trump, he came up with a more personal way of demonstrating toughness — he would march across Lafayette Square to a church damaged by fire the night before.

The only problem: A plan developed earlier in the day to expand the security perimeter around the White House had not been carried out. When Attorney General William P. Barr strode out of the White House gates for a personal inspection early Monday evening, he discovered that protesters were still on the northern edge of the square. For the president to make it to St. John’s Church, they would have to be cleared out. Mr. Barr gave the order to disperse them.

What ensued was a burst of violence unlike any seen in the shadow of the White House in generations. As he prepared for his surprise march to the church, Mr. Trump first went before cameras in the Rose Garden to declare himself “your president of law and order” but also “an ally of all peaceful protesters,” even as peaceful protesters just a block away and clergy members on the church patio were routed by smoke and flash grenades and some form of chemical spray deployed by shield-bearing riot officers and mounted police…  [emphasis added]

0603barrfAttorney General William Barr is facing demands to step down after the Washington Post reported Tuesday that the nation’s top law enforcement official personally ordered police to beat back peaceful protesters gathered near the White House Monday evening to clear the path for President Donald Trump’s walk to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Two anonymous federal law enforcement officials told the Post that “the decision had been made late Sunday or early Monday to extend the perimeter around Lafayette Square by one block.” An unnamed Justice Department official said that Barr on Monday afternoon “went to survey the scene and found the perimeter had not been extended.”

“The attorney general conferred with law enforcement officials on the ground, which the official said is captured in a video of the incident,” the Post reported. “He conferred with them to check on the status and basically said: ‘This needs to be done. Get it done,’ the Justice Department official said.”…  [emphasis added]
