Here is the one hundred seventy-eighth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s winner Republican Nazi soldier and traitor, Ethan Melzer. He is so honored for plotting a jihadist terrorist attack against his own Army unit.

0623MelzerAn American soldier has been arrested for plotting with what prosecutors describe as a “neo-Nazi cult” to attack his own Army unit.

The Washington Post reports that 22-year-old Ethan Melzer gave intelligence about his unit to a racist U.K.-based group called the Order of Nine Angles so they could help launch an attack against it.

Melzer allegedly provided this potentially deadly information intending that it be conveyed to jihadist terrorists,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Strauss described the planned attack as a “murderous ambush” and said Melzer was “motivated by racism and hatred as he attempted to carry out this ultimate act of betrayal.”…  [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Raw Story>

I have no doubt that our veterans will agree that our service personnel trust each other with their lives, so it’s hard to imagine a more Republican crime than this.  Frankly, I hope he gets life without possibility of parole.

Note the ease in which Nazis and Islamic terrorists work together.  As much as Republicans like to associate Al Qaeda and the Daesh (ISIL) with the left, the association could not be valid.  These organizations are right wing.  How could they be leftists when they act just like Republicans.

This does give me cause to worry about the future of brand new Acting US Attorney Audrey Strauss of the the SDNY.  After Melzer committed an act that would qualify him for a high government post in the Republican Reich, criminal Fuhrer Trump* may sic Barrf on Strauss for prosecuting Melzer.

It’s a steamy day here in the CatBox with 90° forecast and high humidity.  Yesterday’s doctor visit never happened.  The office called right when she was supposed to arrive and told me she could not come because she was ill.  We rescheduled for Friday morning.  I’m still doing very well on the Fentanyl.  Have you flushed a Republican today?

From The New Yorker: Donald J. Trump on Monday called his successful drinking of a glass of water at his Tulsa rally his proudest achievement as President.

“I brought that glass of water up to my mouth and drank from it without spilling a drop on my tie,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “You can look at the tape. There was not a single drop of spillage.”

Trump added that, while drinking a glass of water was an impressive achievement in itself, executing it so well in front of such a large crowd made it even more extraordinary.

It’s a busy day, here in the CatBox.  I’m expecting a visit from the Providence doctor shortly.  This is my only article today.  Oh God, it’s Monday!

Short Takes:

From Media Matters: In 2015, after a white supremacist gunned down nine Black worshipers in a Charleston, South Carolina, church and calls to dismantle the symbols of racism and slavery grew louder, Fox figures rallied around the Confederate flag. When state leaders, led by then-Gov. Nikki Haley, ordered the flag’s removal from public buildings, Bill O’Reilly used his Fox prime-time perch to say it “represents, to some, bravery in the Civil War because the Confederates fought hard.” Then-Fox personality Kimberly Guilfoyle speculated about whether the American flag would be next.

In 2017, when a white supremacist mowed down a crowd of protesters at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia — which was spuriously organized around the city’s plan to remove a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee from a local park — the same pattern emerged. Fox figures defended President Donald Trump’s false equivalence between white supremacists and the counterprotesters [sic] at the rally. And they asked whether book burning or removing the U.S. Capitol stone by stone would come next.

Today, the Confederate battle flag and other racist monuments are back in the news. Amid continued nationwide protests over police brutality against Black Americans in the wake of George Floyd’s killing, protesters have begun toppling statues of Confederates and colonizers alike.

The Republican Reichsministry of Propaganda, Faux Noise, will defend racism as long as the racist Republican Reich exists. That’s why every Republican in office is one Republican too many!  RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: Stung by the paltry turnout at his Saturday-night rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Donald J. Trump’s campaign has announced plans to hold his next rally in the bunker beneath the White House.

In announcing the rally, Brad Parscale, the chairman of Trump’s reëlection campaign, denied that the choice of venue reflected a tepid level of enthusiasm to see the candidate speak.

“The bunker holds forty people,” Parscale said. “That is a much larger seating capacity than Joe Biden’s basement.”

Despite the choice of such an intimate venue, however, Trump campaign sources are privately worried that they may have difficulty filling the bunker.

Dang, Andy! At least the Republican Reich will spread less of their Trump* virus plague that way!  RESIST!!

It’s a better Sunday, here in the CatBox.  My Fentanyl patch has helped my pain level and reduced my use of Oxycodone considerably.  Tomorrow I have a morning visit from a Providence Home Health doctor, so how much I publish will depend on how long she is here.  Kudos to all Dads.

Short Takes:

From Alternet: On Friday night, Attorney General William Barr issued a statement saying that the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Geoffry Berman, had resigned. That was a lie. Not only had Berman not resigned, he had told Barr repeatedly that he would not resign, and had turned down other roles at the Department of Justice. So, about an hour after Barr’s statement, Berman issued a statement of his own, telling Barr to stuff it. Actually, Berman stated that he had been “appointed by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York” and that he would only step down “when a presidentially appointed nominee is confirmed by the Senate.” Berman is in the middle of a number of highly sensitive investigations, including an ongoing investigation of Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani and his associates in Trump’s Ukraine scandal. So his removal clearly signals that Barr is, once again, placing Trump’s desires far ahead of such arcane ideas as justice, or the nation.

On Saturday afternoon, Barr produced a new statement. He’s given up the pretense that Berman has resigned. Instead Barr says, “I have asked the president to remove you as of today, and he has done so.” According to Barr, this makes assistant U. S. Attorney Audrey Strauss the new acting U. S. Attorney, but considering Barr’s knowledge and application of the law, odds are he’s simply lying again. Hilariously, Barr claims there’s no danger of there being an issue with ongoing cases because … the inspector general will see to that. As everyone knows, Trump and Barr just respect the hell out of inspectors general.

SDNY’s Geoffrey Berman has resigned. Perhaps he’ll have time to testify to Congress now.

Criminal Fuhrer Trump* claims that Barrf did this on his own. He claims he had nothing to do with it. One, or far more likely, both, are lying. Barrf lacks the authority to fire a US Attorney.  RESIST!!

I hope I found everything  Here are four clips fram last night’s show  Enjoy.

Monologue – Cute. And he touched on just about everything.

Susan Rice – She certainly beats the bejaysus out of Condoleezza. (I’m not surprised to hear that DC’s population is larger than that of Wyoming. I already thought it probably was.)

Monumental Issue – I’m with Malcolm Nance. Andrew Sullivan, not so much.

New Rule – The kids are all right. I hope they stay all right, and I hope we keep all of them. I think Bill’s being reckless. There is just too much we don’t know about the CoViD-19.

Everyday Erinyes #220

Posted by at 10:15 am  Politics
Jun 202020

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

I’m going to try to make this short today, since a lot is going on. Everyone who gets my weekly email is aware that I do my utmost to protect everyone’s privacy by using the “BCC” feature, so that no one who receives it can see anyone else’s email address except mine (just don’t “reply all,” please).

But, although I do try to clean up URLs before posting, I haven’t been quite as conscientious about that. Well, I will be from now on.

Here’s an example – please do not click on it or copy it in full, and I’ll explain why. It’s not even as cluttered as many URLs one sees, but it’s more cluttered than it needs to be.

https://www.metopera.org/season/on-demand/juneteenth?utm_source=OperaStreamsNewsletterW15&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2021_MISC& utm_content=version_A

If this were in a newsletter sent to you, and you clicked on the link, that isn’t what you’d see at the page. Instead, you’d see something like this:

Only when you click in the address bar to select it in order to copy it does the other stuff appear, like this (except there isn’t room for it all):

Now let me quote from a user at Democratic Underground:

What’s all of the rest of that crap? It’s a lot of tracking info, info that lets God-knows-who discover all kinds of stuff, including things like who decided to share this link, and where that person originally found out about the linked article (from Facebook, from Twitter, from a particular friend, etc). While most of this info is in pretty cryptic, some of it is easier to guess at, like that somewhere along the line this link arrived via a newsletter.

Bingo. I got this link from a newsletter – specifically the “OperaStreamsNewsletter”. I can’t translate the rest, except that it does say I received it through email. I’m confident it identifies the exact newsletter it was in. I don’t see in this one that it identifies me personally, but I don’t see why I should be expected even to identify, for free, that, when you go there, you got the address from a newsletter sent to me. Plus, as I mentioned, this is a short string. I have seen some that are more than three times as long as this string.

None of that tracking info is needed, however, if all you really want to do is share the article and nothing else.

Since I’m a software engineer, fixing this sort of thing comes naturally to me. For others, it might not be so obvious.

A good rule of thumb: Look for the first “?” in the link. Most of the time you can throw away everything starting from that question mark onward.

TomCat taught me this technique some time ago, I don’t even remember how many years. But we never discussed why, other than for aesthetic reasons, the technique should virtually always be used. Now I know.

To make sure this works, paste your full link, copy just the first part of the link up to (but not including) the question mark, then paste the fragment you just copied into another browser tab or window. If that works, and takes you to the article you wanted to share with everyone, it’s safe to delete the tracking crap before you post.

Occasionally this technique does not work, which is why it’s important to check it, at least until you are familiar with how sites work that you use frequently. My experience is that 99.9% of the time it doesn’t work, it’s a link to a petition, and the shortened URL only takes you as far as the home page of the sponsoring group. In that case one pretty well has to use the whole thing. I’ve sometimes tried leaving part of the stuff after the “?” but I’ve never gotten one to work, let alone come up with a rule.  But then, unlike my co-member of Democratic Underground, I’m NOT a software engineer.

Incidentally, if I use (as I normally do) the link tool in the comment box (see above) to tie the link to a word or phrase, I will be especially careful to truncate the URL to the minimum needed. Because, although you can’t see it, if it’s there, the site can see all the tracking information – and you won’t know it. So I’ll be particularly careful to make sure that doesn’t happen.

After all that, here’s the actual link (shortened, I promise, and set to open in a new window). It is a little Juneteenth celebration of African American voices in opera. It features more black singers than there are clips, all but one of whom I know of, most of whom I have heard, several of whom I have seen, one in person. I think I would have added in Ryan Speedo Green, but if you want to know about him, you can look here.   (And this also touches on Denyse Graves. It really is a never-ending story.)

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, thank you for allowing me to use your space for something a little different – for Juneteenth – and please help all our readers to be understanding and patient with me too. And at least, everyone can use the technical information.

[P. S.  – Just in case – the Leontyne Price one links to two tracks.  This was her very last performance at the Met.  The first track is 10+ minutes, but the last 3 minutes are nothing but applause.  A very beloved lady.  After the applause, it goes into a duet with African American bass-baritone Simon Estes.]

The Furies and I will be back.
