It’s a very busy day here in the CatBox.  WWW id due in 20 minutes and we have a big load of chores to do.  This is my only article today.

Short Takes:

From YouTube: Barry McGuire – Eve of Destruction

Though released in 1965, this song is still appropriate today. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: In a bold gambit to end the government shutdown, the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, said on Saturday that she would bypass Donald J. Trump and negotiate directly with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

“I owe it to the American people to bring this shutdown to the swiftest possible conclusion, and so I’m avoiding the middleman,” she said.

Dang, Andy! I had no idea that Nancy was so smart! RESIST!!

From Common Dreams: As many historians, economists, and informed citizens were forced to point out in the wake of the freak-out over a proposal by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to raise the current tax rate on the very wealthiest Americans to 70 percent, such a rate is not at all unprecedented and higher rates were the norm for a large portion of last century.

And one of the reasons that much higher rates were once very popular was because they were able to generate lots of revenue that was then put to good use. And, since most people are not extremely rich, there was popular support for such progressive taxation.

What Ocasio-Cortez is actually suggesting, said economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, is "what top public finance economists have been saying for some time" and "not at all outlandish."

I love the idea, but 70%? Why so low? RESIST!!

The Hypocrisy of Exploitation

Posted by at 12:29 pm  Politics

If the wall would solve the problem of undocumented residents, Republicans would have zero interest in building it.  If it were possible to deport all 12 million undocumented residents, Republicans would have zero interest in doing so.  If we could deport undocumented criminals and allow the rest to work here legally, without fear, Republicans would have zero interest in doing it, because it would horrify them.  The interest of the Republican Reich is served only if the problem remains the same.  Republicans practice the hypocrisy of exploitation.

0105TrumpUndocumented

If I told you that President Trump employs undocumented immigrants, you might say, “That’s impossible. A staunch and principled opponent of illegal immigrants like him would never allow such a thing!” Or, if you actually knew anything about Trump, you might say, “Of course he does.”

Well guess what:

During more than five years as a housekeeper at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., Victorina Morales has made Donald J. Trump’s bed, cleaned his toilet and dusted his crystal golf trophies. When he visited as president, she was directed to wear a pin in the shape of the American flag adorned with a Secret Service logo.

Because of the “outstanding” support she has provided during Mr. Trump’s visits, Ms. Morales in July was given a certificate from the White House Communications Agency inscribed with her name.

Quite an achievement for an undocumented immigrant housekeeper.

Ms. Morales’s journey from cultivating corn in rural Guatemala to fluffing pillows at an exclusive golf resort took her from the southwest border, where she said she crossed illegally in 1999, to the horse country of New Jersey, where she was hired at the Trump property in 2013 with documents she said were phony.

She said she was not the only worker at the club who was in the country illegally.

Obviously Trump doesn’t personally hire every housekeeper in his clubs (although one of these undocumented immigrants was ironing his underwear; that’s how close to him they were). The Trump organization says it will fire any of its workers it learns is in the country illegally. But the truth is that Trump has a long history of using foreign and undocumented labor, without much regard for the American workers he says are displaced by immigrant labor and sometimes without evident concern for the law. Let’s run through some of his history:

  • Trump regularly hires foreign workers for jobs as housekeepers and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida. While the law requires an employer to first make an effort to find employees in the United States before filing a request to hire foreign workers, Mar-a-Lago accomplishes this by complying with the letter of the law but in a manner seemingly designed make sure it gets no American applicants: by placing two small ads deep inside the Palm Beach Post to which an applicant may reply only via mail or fax — not online, not by phone and not in person.
  • According to an investigation by Mother Jones, Trump’s modeling agency, Trump Model Management, brought foreign models to the United States to work, despite the fact that they were in the country on tourist visas, a violation of the law. “Two of the former Trump models said Trump’s agency encouraged them to deceive customs officials about why they were visiting the United States and told them to lie on customs forms about where they intended to live.” They were crammed into small apartments for which the agency charged them exorbitant rent and had other expenses deducted from their fees, leaving them with little income and the constant knowledge that they could be sent out of the country at any moment. “It is like modern-day slavery,” said one model.
  • Trump Tower was built in part by undocumented Polish workers who sued Trump to get wages they said they were owed. "We worked in horrid, terrible conditions,” said one. ”We were frightened illegal immigrants and did not know enough about our rights.”

It’s hard to know how much Trump knew at the time he was employing all of these undocumented immigrants; he tends to plead ignorance. But we certainly see a pattern of a man who wants things done cheaply and isn’t too concerned about the rules… [emphasis added]

Chris Hayes has more depth on the ladies in Bedminster in this video.

As have seen, this is just one case of many violations by Fuhrer Drumpfenfarten.  But he isn’t the only Republican doing it.  For example, Little Lord Willard, aka R-Money [R-UT], did the same thing, when he was running in 2012.

The pattern works like this.  Republicans in government keep undocumented workers in a state of fear, so that Republicans in agriculture or business, especially in the service industries, by pretending to be undocumented workers’ protectors, can exploit them with excessive work hours, sub-standard wages and deplorable living and work conditions.  If we were to solve the problem, Republicans would lose the fear they use to keep undocumented workers cheap and obedient.  That is the hypocrisy of exploitation.  It is a Republican trait.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Democrats Paint Stark Contrast With Outgoing Republicans (18:29)

"HR1 is the most far reaching reform plan to be introduced in Congress, since the Watergate era." This is a beautiful way to introduce voters to what the Democratic Party wants to do. We must publicize the bill (text of HR1 here) and the tactics Republicans use to keep it from becoming law. RESIST!!

From YouTube (RWW Channel): RWW News: Hank Kunneman Prophesies That God Will Use 2019 to Divide the Democrats

Barf Bag Alert!!

I hate to say this. To be divided, Democrats have never needed help from hate-filled, rabid pseudo-Christians (the opposite of real authentic Christians) or Republican Supply-side Jesus (a Republican invention that is the opposite of the real Jesus). We have accomplished that all by ourselves. That MUST stop NOW! RESIST!!

From Alternet: 1. Tucker Carlson warns women being paid more than men will destroy society.

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson is by now well-known for his on-air appeals to white nationalism. Last month, his remarks that immigrants make America “poorer and dirtier” have caused him to lose a raft of advertisers in recent weeks. But he also has a serious problem with women — and according to his broadcast on Wednesday, rising pay for women will lead to “men in decline.”

Carlson claimed that because “male-dominated” industries like manufacturing are in decline in some parts of the country, but schools, hospitals, and other places that employ large numbers of women are in as high demand as ever, “in many areas, women suddenly made more than men … Study after study shows that when men make less than women, women generally no longer want to marry them.”

“Over big populations this causes a drop in marriage, a spike in out-of-wedlock births and all the familiar disasters that inevitably follow. More drug and alcohol abuse, higher incarceration rates, fewer families formed in the next generation,” Carlson warned…

…Naturally, Carlson doesn’t provide any sourcing for these claims. Nor does he seem to have noticed that women in fact earn less than men on average, not more.

This is the first of five most ridiculous Republican moments of week. Click through for the other four. RESIST!!

President Donald Trump, aka Fuhrer Drumpfenfarten, has been getting his own way about everything.  That is, until yesterday.  The 116th session of Congress was sworn-in.  They elected Nancy Pelosi [D-CA] Speaker of the House again.  They passed two bills to reopen the government without providing a penny for the Republican Wall of Hatred.  Effectively they told Trump, “Take your shutdown and shove it!”

0104Spending

Hours after Democrats took control of the U.S. House on Thursday, lawmakers approved two spending bills to reopen the federal government.

The House, seeking to end the 13-day shutdown, passed funding for eight of the nine closed departments by a vote of 241-190 Thursday night. All Democrats and eight Republicans approved the measure, which provides funding through Feb. 8.

In addition, the House voted 239-192, including backing by five Republicans, to fund the Department of Homeland Security at current spending levels through Feb. 8, with $1.3 billion for border security but no money to build a wall.

“Let’s open the government, and let’s get to work because we have a plan that makes sense,” Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, said at a news conference before the votes…. [emphasis added]

Inserted from <UPI>

Kudos to the Democrats. The following video clip provides more detail.

Here’s what is so special about this tactic.  On December 19, the Senate Republicans, with agreement from Democrats, unanimously passed a virtually identical bill.  So the House is just saying yes to what they proposed.  Now if they refuse to vote on House version, they expose their naked hypocrisy to voters.

Speaking of naked hypocrisy, few things are more revolting than Bought Bitch Mitch naked.

From TPM: Hours after being sworn in as a new congresswoman on Thursday, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) dropped a bomb on an issue around which most Democrats have been walking on eggshells.

“‘Look, Mama, you won. Bullies don’t win,’” Tlaib quoted her son to the crowd at a MoveOn reception. “And I said, ‘Baby, they don’t.’ Because we’re gonna go in there and impeach the motherfucker.”

The crowd erupted.

A Meeting of Giants

A few years back a new face appeared on the financial services scene.  She explained financial services practices in a way that affected me in two ways.  For the first time, I understood exactly what Banksters and their minions were (and are) up to.  Second, I became very pissed off about it.  As for Rachel Maddow, she has been my favorite Journalist, since MSNBC fired Keith Olbermann in 2011.

0103Maddow-Warren

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said Wednesday that the Democratic Party should say "no to the billionaires."

Warren, during an appearance on MSNBC’s "The Rachel Maddow Show," called on the party to disavow billionaire 2020 presidential candidates "whether they are self-funding" or funding Political Action Committees (PACs).

Is this going to be a Democratic primary that is funded by the grassroots, that is done with grassroots volunteers, or is this going to be something that’s just one more plaything that billionaires can buy?” Warren asked.

“So I think this is a moment for all of the Democratic nominees to come into the race to say ‘in a Democratic primary we are going to link arms and we’re going to say grassroots funding. No to the billionaires. No to the billionaires whether they are self-funding or whether they are funding PACs. We are the Democratic Party and that’s the party of the people,’" she continued. "That’s how we not only win elections, that’s how we win movements that make real change.”…  [emphasis added]

Here are three video clips from that interview.

Elizabeth Warren: ‘No To The Billionaires’ Funding Politics

Liz and Rachel are giants, because nobody else explains injustice more clearly, accurately, and honestly than they do. I fully agree with grass roots funding. Just say no to billionaires!

Warren: Corruption Makes Donald Trump ‘An Accelerant’ Of Inequality

As corrupt and evil as Trump is, he’s just the logical culmination of the equally corrupt and evil Republican Reich.

Elizabeth Warren: Endless War In Syria, Afghanistan Is Not Working

I agree with her, both that we need to withdraw , and that we need to coordinate that with our allies. I have said this before.

Of course, it’s way too early to predict the outcome of Campaign 2020, but with Liz running and Rachel covering it, we shall be living in interesting times.

From YouTube (Media Matters Channel): Fox figures repeatedly urged Trump to shut down the government over border wall funding

Barf Bag Alert!!

Fuhrer Drumpfenfarten shut it down to please the idiots at the Republican Reichsministry of Propaganda, Faux Noise! RESIST!!

From Vox: House Democrats have released their new proposal to change rules for how the House of Representatives conducts its business for the next two years — and there’s a lot in it.

Democrats are doing a number of things to decentralize power from leadership and open up the process of legislating.

The rules package is an important statement that shows what issues Democrats are elevating in their first few weeks of the session and how they intend to govern over the next two years. Basically, Democrats are trying to show they will behave much differently than House Republicans have over the past eight years.

With public trust in Congress at historic lows, Democrats are taking a number of steps to strengthen ethics rules and bring back regular order to the legislative process — giving bills with broad bipartisan support a chance to go through committee even if they don’t have leadership’s blessing.

Under the Republican Reich, no Bill could make it to the floor without the support of the Republican leadership, and the majority of the Congressional Reich. The Democratic Rules are how the House is supposed to be run. However, Pay-Go must be removed from the rules. RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Two federal workers and their union have filed a lawsuit against the government over the wages they’re losing during Donald Trump’s shutdown. Justin Tarovisky and Grayson Sharp work in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and they’re still on the job as essential employees during the shutdown:

“They’re working a dangerous job, they’re critically understaffed, and now, they don’t know when they’ll next get paid,” [attorney Heidi Burakiewicz] said, adding that “essential” employees will continue incurring the costs of commuting to work, such as gas and child care. Without knowing how long the shutdown will last, many workers may be forced to make challenging choices.

"They may be paycheck to paycheck, have cellphone bills, mortgages. … It’s unacceptable for any employer, but especially for the U.S. government,” Burakiewicz contended.

A similar lawsuit by the same attorney was successful during the 2013 shutdown … but 25,000 federal workers are still waiting for the damages they’re entitled to, after an appeals process that ended just last year.

Frankly, they should sue the Republican Party and Faux Noise. RESIST!!

0103Poll

Here are the results of our “What I’m Getting for Christmas” Poll.  Politics Plus Polls are not scientific, because those who respond are not balanced according to demographic categories.   Therefore, we do not accurately reflect the makeup of the US population.  Nevertheless, our polls are usually factually accurate, and more often than not, they reflect thinking of the majority of those who actually do think.

And here on your comments:

I’ve been so very good. But the presents are few and far between. But what I got was so FINE thanks to my sons!!

I’ve been nice, but no presents for me. Decades ago our family decided we were just exchanging shopping lists. So now, instead, we just donate to a charity of choice. Well, except if there were little ones (there aren’t anymore.)

We all like it much better. So now it’s like Thanksgiving, but with flashier decorations.

My Santa Sisters always get my presents from the animal rescue site. We end up giving over $100 every year. About my stocking; I have a purple stocking that almost never gets full. Maybe Santa doesn’t like purple! Tough luck, Santa! LOL

No option applicable, because no stockings in the middle of summer.

And I wouldn’t dare to admit to being naughty for fear of getting coal. ARGH. Isn’t it time to drop that option for PP devotees?

We’re pinching pennies here, (after necessary home improvements), and we’ve decided one present for each other. But a wonderful Christmas dinner with all the fixin’s, as we’ve both been fairly well behaved, according to Santa’s long list. lol

I’ve been very, very nice but I don’t expect anything in my stocking (except maybe my foot,) I’m allergic to wood smoke … so I have no chimney. Oh, well. Better luck in the next life.

I think I’ve been robbed.  I was VERY naughty!  Where was my silver?  My gold? My jewels?  My trophy mistress?  Scheeeeesch!

On a serious note, the new poll is designed to make you think.  You will want to say ‘all’ or ‘most’ of the choices, but I want you to pick just one, not as the only thing, but the single most important thing.  Vote and enjoy!
