Good vs Evil

Since I summarized it in today’s Open Thread, I’m going to take a break from the impeachment trial of Putin’s Pollution Pervert, Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, Resident Donald Trump.  Instead, I’d like to give you an extreme example of good, followed by an extreme example of evil.  Then I’ll contrast the two.

The Good:

0122Greta

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg inveighed against the sowers of “climate chaos” Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, offering a view of the world that stood in stark contrast to President Trump’s.

In two speeches at the conference, the 17-year-old Thunberg renewed the call to “start listening to the science” on climate change. The world, she said, needs to “treat this crisis with the importance it deserves.”

Thunberg’s remarks echoed her warning in Davos last year, when she told world leaders: “I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.”

The Swedish teenager’s activism helped inspire a global climate action movement, which earned her Time magazine’s Person of the Year title in December.

Greta Thunberg Tells Davos: You’ve Done Nothing On Climate Change [Full Speech]

The Evil:

0122TrumpDavos

President Donald Trump’s speech in Davos was not what many attendees wanted to hear.

At a conference dedicated to multilateralism and earnest discussion of the world’s most pressing problems, the American president used his keynote address to reel off a laundry list of his domestic accomplishments, promote the US economy and dismiss climate activists as “prophets of doom.”

He didn’t take questions from his host, World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab, or the elite audience of leading executives, bankers and politicians.

This year’s Davos meeting is focusing heavily on how business and the economy must change to save the planet. But taking the stage just hours after Greta Thunberg admonished world leaders for doing “basically nothing” to reduce carbon emissions, Trump touted America’s role as the world’s biggest oil and gas producer and dismissed climate activists as prophets of doom…

  1. Greta is the adult in the room. Very well spoken and a warning to us all,and to the world about our crisis.
dt sounds (and is).. like the drunk uncle at the family picnic, and doesn’t know when to sit down, and sthu.
Great post, and passing on. thx!

  2. Well, since we are talking about good and evil here, I think I’ll do a little ranting.

But God chose the “foolish” things of the world that he might put to shame those who are “wise.” God chose the “weak” things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are “strong.” I Cor 1:27 Quotation marks mine.

What could be more “foolish” than a young woman in her teens? Think of the expression “Valley girl” and you’ll see that point. What could be more “wise” than pundits – the “nattering nabobs of nationalism.” (Forgive me – I couldn’t resist.) Or what could be more weak than one uncredentialed person? And what could be stronger than the the President of the United States, particularly with all the weight of “white evangelical Christianity (and I hope you can hear the sarcasm dripping)” behind him? Even without any Scripture, I think we all know who is on God’s side here.

I could rant a good deal longer about why Christians and power are always a bad combination, with quotes from Scripture and examples from history from hell to breakfast. But I’ll stop now. No one has all day to spend on this topic.

  3. Greta: “…as if you loved your children above all else.”  Even above greed?  Nah!
    Dump-hole: Blathering POS!
CNN: I’m a tree hugger from way back when, but even if dumpy is not(?) lying, I’m with Greta.  So, we join the initiative, plant 17 trees, and Dump-hole spews some garbage about “That ought to do it,” which is entirely within his character, so what?
Joanne: “…white evangelical Christianity…,” just waiting for the Rapture?  Is that their thing? WEC, believing that THIS world is irrelevant, because they “KNOW” there is another, so much better one awaiting them, their version of Planet B?  Your sarcasm comes across loud and strong, and welcome!  I’ll stop ranting, as well.

  4. Looking at the contrasting pictures of the last video I was reminded of the fact that this is a battle on numerous levels; good-evil, young-old, realist-liar/fantasist but also between two personality disorders narcissism-Asperger’s. It has been noted that “Asperger’s Disorder is often misdiagnosed as a cluster B personality disorder, most often as the Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).” In this case, however, Greta’s Asperger couldn’t be further removed from Trump’s extreme NPD. Greta has certainly broken the mould again with her speech, sadly Trump has done so too, not so much for his affliction as with his affliction.

While most world leaders were cringing during Trump’s speech, Aussie Finance Minister Mathias Cormann, representing Australia in Davos defended Trump’s address, describing it as “a great speech, a fantastic speech”. I suppose it was raining at the time he said that; the fires have started up again near Sydney where the temperatures are scorching again in the next extreme heatwave.

  5. Wow…listening and reading what Greta had to say about our climate change issues, were outstanding.
She speaks with such intelligence compared to tRump who’s the complete opposite…. brainless.

  6. Good versus Evil indeed! One heroic little teen angel versus a vile orange demon and his fat-cat cohorts. Which side do you choose?

  7. Amen to all!  Hugs! 04
