Yesterday, I moved some clothes around – put some away, took some out to be handy both to visit Virgil and to change into when I get home. Of course the pronblem with that is that it take twice as long to recover as it does to do. But I did manage. And rested a little with knitting. (One yarn company has as its motto “Knit. Relax. Repeat.” Almot too cute.)

Short Takes –

The 19th – The 19th Explains: Key races to watch in November 2 elections
Quote – The year after a presidential contest is not a big one for elections, but two states and several major cities are holding elections this year for governor, state legislators, mayors and more. The debates are shaped by local issues, like housing, and national issues, like the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Click through for all eight. It mentions the NYC mayor but not the DA, in which Alvin Bragg is running to succeed Cy Vance. He may, of course, be unopposed.

Crools and Liars – Biden Breaks Stalemate As New Hope Emerges For Transformational Agenda
Quote – The details of the bill are still being worked out, but Jayapal has made clear so far that progressives’ priorities are still in the bill, even though they’ve had to scale back some of the proposals. Manchin and Sinema have continued to be the skunks at the garden party, but Biden seems to have pinned them down on both a price tag and their red lines in the sand.
Click through for the story. Crooks and Liars is an unlikely place to look to for hope, but I’ll take it where I can get it.

PolitiZoom – Gerrymandering On Steroids W. Virginia Governor says He’ll Accept Three Maryland Counties Who Want To Secede
Quote – This is either a Fox News publicity stunt which has gone too far, or maybe state lines will be redrawn in dramatic ways if this is real and it catches on. As you’ve probably heard, three western Maryland counties want to secede from Maryland and become a part of West Virginia. What’s that you say? Who in their right mind would want to leave the 15th largest economy in the nation and move to the 48th? Beats the hell out of me.
Click through for what little else is known. If they can do this without changing the number of House Representatives each state is now assigned, I say go for it.

  1. Sounds like you have a good plan re: your clothes. I need to go through my closet too. I like the yarn company’s motto too. Gotta run…so I’ll be short. lol

Cartoon: They’d love that, wouldn’t they?
C&L: YAY! This is indeed good news!
Politizoom: Wow! Who would of thought of this?
    FFT: Ugh!

THIS JUST IN:  “Republicans faced with the horror of January 6 are like kids who close their eyes and somehow think we can’t see them.” ~ George Takei ~
    2. “I can’t believe we share the Earth with people who think Alec Baldwin belongs in jail but Kyle Rittenhouse is a hero.” ~ KD ~
    3. “As a start, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, Lauren Boebert, Madison Cawthorn, Mo Brooks, Josh Hawley, Jim Banks, Ted Cruz, Andy Biggs and Louie Gohmert must immediately be expelled from Congress andthen all must be charged with sedition for their role in the insurrection..” ~ Ricky Davila ~
    4. “January 6 Committee Chairman announces that Facebook is turning over the “information” that the committee requested regarding Trump and his insurrectionists’ use of Facebook to “organize the insurrection” and push the Big Lie. RT IF YOU THINK THAT THIS IS GREAT NEWS!” ~ Occupy Democrats ~

    • TJI #2 – AMEN!

The Daily News rightly slammed Junior for his tasteless t-shirt mocking Baldwin (Guns Don’t Kill People – Alec Baldwin Kills People”) w/ a great front page headline:

      TJI #3 – A good starting point list …

    • TJI #1 – Except that the creatures who do that – very small children, puppies, etc – are far more fun, charming, and innocent than the GQP.
TJI #2 – That is pretty blatant. But not the only example. They also think Hillary Clinton belongs in prison and Trump** doesn’t.
TJI #3 – Just thinking here – if Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz – and, let’s see, Tuberville took a call from Trump, didn’t he? – could be expelled – doesn’t it take only a simple majority to change a rule?
      TJI #4 – How nice.
TJI #5 – Yes, well, about time. Way past time.
TJI #6 – Mitch sent us a link to that article yesterday It is not terribly long and is a real eye opener. In case anyone missed it, here it is again – https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/exclusive-jan-6-organizers-met-congress-white-house-1245289/

  2. My Mom and an aunt used to do a lot of crocheting, but never any knitting that I can recall.  But then they switched to caning chairs, which was great because there were a whole kitchen set of chairs from the family farm that were badly in need.

Key races to watch in November 2 elections

While everyone is focused on the Virginia race, the Minneapolis ballot initiative caught my eye.  It deals w/ the concept of transforming the Police Dept. to the Dept. of Public Safety.

What I found most interesting at BALLOTPEDIA was the list of Supporters:

    Supporters
    Officials
    U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D)
    Attorney General Keith Ellison (D)
    Unions
Minneapolis Federation of Teachers and Educational Support Professionals
    SEIU Local 26
    UNITE HERE Local 17
    Organizations
    ACLU of Minnesota
    American Civil Liberties Union
    Black Visions Collective
    MoveOn
    Open Society Policy Center
    Reclaim the Block
Twin Cities Democratic Socialists of America
    WDN Action

    Compared to Opponents:

    Opponents
    Officials
    U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D)
    U.S. Sen. Tina Smith (D)
    U.S. Rep. Angie Craig (D)
    Gov. Tim Walz (D)
    Mayor Jacob Frey (D)
    Individuals
Gregory Hestness – Former Deputy Police Chief

Biden Breaks Stalemate As New Hope Emerges For Transformational Agenda

Maybe a little over the top on enthusiasm.  While the social infrastructure bill is no where near what we want & need, to come up empty-handed would be a Disaster – with a capital “D”!

    W. Virginia Governor says He’ll Accept Three Maryland Counties Who Want To Secede

Well, that’s not gonna happen.  But there were some great comments in the Tweet.  My favorite:

    • Yes, Nameless, I agree with you on the caption about West Virginia….ROFL  28

    • I took up crochet first, mostly because it seemed more intuitive (and it is.)But I was often frustrated by the lack of stunning fashion patterns in crochet. Eventually – ten years after learning crochet – I took up knitting. Because it’s not as intuitive, I had issues when I started. But once I got past that, I enjoy it much more, and there is no lack of stunning patterns. The hook gives one more control over the yarn than a single pointed needle. But two needles together provide even more control over the yarn, once one has gotten used to working with them.

That graphic looks like it came from Despair Inc., the inventor of DEmotivational posters.  But them, ist’s such a great format, there are a lot of kimitators.

West Virginia used to be part of Virginia and split off.  So I guess it’s not a surprise that their so-ironically-named governor is open to the idea.

  3. Comment from Mitch –

‘Toon: Damn Libruls! The 19th: Being from N.J. and N.Y.C., I have some emotional connection to each.  Phil Murphy, though from afar, now, would suit me just fine.
In NYC,, while I have held Slewa in positive esteem, for his work with the Guardian Angels, which I believe he established, back in the day, turns
me off, predictably, I suppose, as I do not want to see a Republican mayor there.
C&L: OPTIMISM!!!!!  What in the heck is that?  I’m sorry, but I had all but given up on anything like what is being described, and on the promise that
Biden had seemed to represent.  If this works out, and the bill passes, it ought to give a heck of a boost to his bona fides, and the rest of his program!
Manchin would be less tempted to go Independent, giving McTurtle-thing the gavel, again, in a political tragedy probably beyond our worst imagining, I expect.  I wonder when the big vote will come, perhaps this week, I think I’ve read.
Politizoom: I can not see how the number of representatives would not change, and, I expect, for the worse.  Outside of that, excuse me, but f*** ’em.
It would be like Texas deciding to become part of Mexico again (pobre gentes), and I’d say “Bye now!” with a big smile on my face.
FFT: Exactly the fear, if the above bill fails: Spider webs and moth balls.
    Mitch

  4. Running a bot late tonight. Nice you’ve gotten your clothes organized.
    Cartoon: Greedy Heartless R’s.
C&L: Good to hear, but too bad they’ve had to cut so much out to get to where they’re currently at.
Politizoom: Sounds way off to me.
Food for Thought: Sad situation, so many suffering from this.
I had a couple of appointments to take care of today before I have to be at the surgery center tomorrow morning. I’m scheduled for 9:45 which is the surgeons second operation.
Please let Lynn know that she’s in my prayers for her operation to go well.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

  5. Hi guys!  Quick note before I head for the feathers.  My surgery for tomorrow has been cancelled and will either be Thursday or Friday.  Apparently the surgeon had an emergency.  Not only do I have pain but I find that I get very tired.  Good night all!

  6. Sorry, Joanne, I’m too late for anything.

    • Lynn: Hope you can get your surgery done in a timely manner. Get your rest too.

Take good, good care, and Prayers up for you, Lynn.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
