Yesterday, I slept in a couple of hours – no cool dreams, but I awoke to a day cool enough to shut off all the fans again. Of course. I surely could have used that kind of weather Sunday. Today is supposed to stay cool-ish, and then back to the fans for another week. Of course that’s not carved in stone. Incidentally, today is the day the US celebrates the Chinese Moon Festival (China celebrates for 3 days). If there is an Asian grocery near you, you might want to see whether they have any extra Mooncakes. Yum.

Short Takes –

Crooks and Liars – Eric Trump Has A Fit On Fox News Over Getting Subpoenas ‘Every Single Day’
Quote – Eric Trump complained on Sunday that the Trump Organization and the Trump family is facing an onslaught of investigations and that they are forced to respond to subpoenas “every single day.”

The Hill – Drug companies on verge of sinking longtime Democratic priority
Quote – The bill at the center of the fight, H.R. 3, would allow Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs by tying them to the lower prices paid by other high-income countries. The measure is projected to free up around $700 billion through the money it saves on drug purchases — covering a big chunk of the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion spending plan.
CLick through for background. This is the kind of story that often geets overlooked, but shouldn’t.

The 19th – ‘We’re seeing shock.’ Texas abortion clinics are now operating as trauma centers
Quote – When patients arrive at [Whole Woman’s Health in Fort Worth], she said, they are aware of the realities of the new law: Abortion past six weeks is now illegal, with no exceptions for rape and incest. Still, they can hardly process that there’s little the clinic can do to help them…. For patients they can’t treat, clinic staff offer to schedule appointments with providers out of state. To date, not a single patient at Whole Woman’s Health in Fort Worth has taken them up on it. Most are taken aback by the offer, Sadler said. They’ve already had to take time off of work, find child care and transportation, even leave meals for family at home just to make it through the door at her clin

  1. (Might be scarce for a bit.  I badly need to cut the grass, but the mower won’t cooperate.  I think it’s the carburetor – it starts fine, but only runs for a few seconds.  Sadly, I’m not very mechanically inclined.)

    • /that’s similar to the way my car acted after not having been driven for a year – it took a jump fine (at least for a while) but stopped withing seconds of the cables being removed.  But I don’t think mowers work that way.

  2. Glad to read that you got your rest, and now with cooler weather coming in, it will be nice to not use a fan for a day or so. Our temps are also supposed to drop down in the evenings…in the 60’s/50’s. Nice !

Cartoon: Read them all. The Hobbit was wonderful and the characters were all good…like Bilbo Baggins and with his friends. Lord of the Rings was good too. Saw the movie a couple times, directed by Peter Jackson.

    C&L: No words needed. 21 21 21

The Hill: Bummer for the consumer, with increased or higher cost of prescripts.

The 19th: So horribly sad, and distressing for the women who need to get one. I feel bad for those women, who cry and the doctors can’t do anything to assist them at their clinic(s), nor this governor not caring either. Shame!

FFT: Wow! How despairing for these folks…and for the doctors who must be making very difficult decisions to the patient and the family, and for the health and welfare of the public.

This just in: TJI  “The United States plans to ease travel restrictions on visitors from Europe and the United Kingdom starting in November, per Biden administration officials.” ~ Yamiche Alcindor ~
    2. “Cruel & craven GOP Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick “spews racist replacement theory”. Enough is enough. While he wastes billions of our money on the border, he attacks our diversity.” ~ Matthew Dowd ~
    3. “This is not just insane but dangerously so. It exposes Trump’s psychopathic delusion that he is still the president and should alert us all to his plot to retake the White House and rule for life starting January 20, 2025. TRUMP MUST BE STOPPED. NOW. ~ Lawrence Tribe ~
    4. “If big corporations and the very wealthy pay their fair share, we can invest in the American people, cut taxes for the middle class, reduce health care costs, create jobs, fight climate change, and so much more.”
~ Vice President Kamala Harris ~
    5. “More than 400 voter suppression bills have been introduced in states across the country—31 have passed. The Freedom to Vote Act will put a stop to this. Let’s get it done.”~ Amy Klobuchar~

    • If I remember correctly, I read “THe Hobbit” in around 1955, and The Lord of the Rings by 1958.  They were a part of my life – can I say a part of my soul? – and in many ways still are.  And that is just fine with me.  I will take Tolkien’s RC idealism over other wordl views any day.  It is, of course, harder to maintain when humans, hobbits, and oecs all reside in the same areas, and ook so much like each other that you don’r know which one you are talking or socializing with until they say something.  But it’s still worth hanging on.  And we won’t have a democracy much longer if we don’t.

TJI #1 – I’m pretty sure that’s “fully vaccinated visitors” from Europe and the UK. Not only for our protection, but for theirs. If we were to alloe unvaccinated, I can foresee serious international incidents occurring.
TJI #2 – Seriously, if these bigots truly believe they were superior to people in whatever the replacement theory of the month is, they would not be so worried about getting replaced. And the same applies if they really thought they were the only people who had a work ethic. Hey, racists – your fear of being inferior is showing.
TJI #3 – Preach it, Mr. Tribe, Esq.!
TJI #4 – Which is exactly why Republicans don’t want to do it (that, and their donations.) I harvested so many videos yesterday I couldn’t get them all in one post, but check the video thread tomorrow for Thom Hartmann’s “Why is Santa Claus goimg to drop a bomb on Biden?” I think it’s about ten minutes – but it should be as well known as the Southern strategy, because both are about equally in play.
TJI #5 – As I’ve mentioned before, the Freedom th Vote Act is not the John Lewis Act, but it is the one which originated in the Senate – Manchin is a co-sponsor – so it has a fighting chance. And it is the best we can possibly get this year. Let’s not allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good.

    • TJI #2 – Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (R-TX) “spews racist replacement theory”: He has long practiced this kind of dreadful & deceitful demagoguery for ages.

TJI #4 – What do all these mega-wealthy billionaires playing a real-life Monopoly game think is going to happen when they have ALL the money and the we peons have NOTHING?

Do they not remember Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and a little invention called the guillotine?

TJI #5 – B. Franklin: “A republic … if you can keep it.”

    • TJI#1: Nice for ones who have families here and also for our economy too.
TJI#2: What a racist bas*ard. He can take his theory and shove it.
      TJI#3: I agree with Mr. Tribe 100%.
TJI#4: Insane, these greedy millionaires need to pay their part.
TJI#5: This has got to end. It’s the people’s right to vote. We shall fight.

  3. Cartoon: Great book.
C&L: Hate to tell him and his family, that I feel no sympathy for them.
The Hill: Sad news. Greedy companies. Will continue signing petitions to fight for lower prices.
The 19Th: Despicable. Not showing any care what-so-ever for a women’s health. My question to any of the politician is what would they do if their daughter was raped and became pregnant, who they go by the rules and tell her she can’t have an abortion?
Food for Thought: Awful what anti-vaxxers are causing everywhere. Besides their own illness, they’re placing so many other vaccinated patients lives in jeopardy. Shameful. I certainly wouldn’t want to be one of the hospital doctors/staff who must choose on who gets to be on a ventilator.
Glad you were able to get some rest yesterday. Plus that Mother Nature was kind with cooling off some.
We were in the mid high 90’s today, but it will drop down to the low 60’s tonight.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

  4. Cartoon: I first read The Hobbit when I was 14 (1970) for English classes and reread it a few times until I bought a cheap all-in-one pocket of Lord of the Rings in my first year at Uni (1974) which became my favourite read during the holidays until it nearly fell apart.

C&L: I don’t believe for one moment that the Trump clan get subpoenaed every single day, but even if it were true it should be at least twice a day. I hope just going to court completely bankrupts the whole lot of them. For starters.

TH: Have you ever heard of principles and sticking to those very important ones that safeguard people’s health, Democrats? Promises, promises and more promises during election time but forgotten as soon as their bottoms touch the plush seatings of the Capitol.

19th: All those Texan male lawmakers should be forced to man the reception, listen to the dispair of those women who came in knowing they can’t get an abortion and then turn them away. I wonder how long they’d last.

FFT: This was in the making. I’m so sorry for those doctors and nurses having to go through this day after day. They know that many of their patients wouldn’t be there if they had been vaccinated on time. A decision they made for themselves, but the decision of whether they live or die is now in the hands of others.
