Yesterday it was still pretty cool but I know it won’t last. It’s been nice while it did, though.

Short Takes

The Hill – Five big questions as Jan. 6 panel preps subpoenas
The Questions – 1. Will the panel hit roadblocks for subpoenaed documents?
2. Should lawmakers like McCarthy and Jordan be called to testify?
3. Could any Democratic witnesses offer testimony?
4. Will they go after former Trump officials?
5. Will there be an August hearing?
Click through for expanded speculation. Of course the first rule of lawyering is “never ask a question if you don’t know the answer,” and though this is not exactly a trial, it is a kind of court.

The New Yorker – New York State Weighs Ban on Male Governors
Quote – “If, at the end of fifty years, we have reason to believe that a male governor could behave in an appropriate manner, then the law would expire,” State Senator Carol Foyler, one of the bill’s sponsors, said. “If, however, it’s determined that New York could not tolerate a male governor at that time, there is a provision to extend the law for an additional fifty years.”
Click through – it’s short.

HuffPost – I’m An ICU Doctor And I Cannot Believe The Things Unvaccinated Patients Are Telling Me
Quote – I am angry that the tragic scenes of prior surges are being played out yet again, but now with ICUs primarily filled with patients who have chosen not to be vaccinated. I am angry that it takes me over an hour to explain to an anti-vaxxer full of misinformation that intubation isn’t what “kills patients” and that their wish for chest compressions without intubation in the event of a respiratory arrest makes no sense. I am angry at those who refuse to wear “muzzles” when grocery shopping for half an hour a week, as I have been so-called “muzzled” for much of the past 18 months.

Food for Thought (of course this doesn’t apply to anyone here!)

  1. Five big questions for Jan. 6 Select Committee panel
    1. Probably – but I still anticipate subpoenas
    2. YES!
    3. Maybe.  Of course I love Auntie Maxine, BUT I would NOT call Rep. Maxine Waters to testify.  She’s simply too polarizing, and we don’t need to hand the GQP an unforced error with her testimony.
    4. They better!
    5. Probably – they want the momentum during their summer recess.
New York State Weighs Ban on Male Governors
Hey, Andy – why stop with just governors?
I’m An ICU Doctor And I Cannot Believe The Things Unvaccinated Patients Are Telling Me
This was a tough read for me.  Too close to home, I guess.

  2. ‘Toon: I’m nearing the end of “America’s Constitution , a Biography,” by Akhil reed Amar, which includes material about the transition rom the Articles of Confederation, to the Constitution; not the difficult read I though it would be, upon first seeing the tome.
TH: Very interesting!  The point about Jordan creating a circus is well taken.
New Yorker: Hey, maybe worth considering!
HP: It is hard to get one’s head around massive crazy behavior! “Mental illness, is a state of mind which prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction.”  These folks have neither normal perception, or behavior. Their long present biases, and/or cynicism have prepped them to buy into idiocy, into the cult of TOT. Nameless, i can certainly appreciate your position.
    FFT: Love it!

  3. Cartoon: A good day.
TH: Yes, all the way through!
    NYer: Something to think about….
HP: Sad. Just plain sad. And reckless if not getting the vaccine.
    FFT: Priceless!!!! Love it!
    Thank you, Joanne for post.
Enjoy your weather…it’s hot as Hades and muggy here. I’m not complaining though, I’d rather have that then the fires we are known to have around this time of year. PTL.

TJI – “Before anyone dismisses @GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy’s “joke” (it’s NOT a joke) about hitting @SpeakerPelosi with a gavel, consider McCarthy voted AGAINST the VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT and hisRepublican colleagues who have DELIBERATELY obstructed it. There is a PATTERN against women.”
    ~ Don Winslow ~
    2. “Sometimes bad parents raise bad kids, like the Trumps. And sometimes great parents raise bad kids anyway, like the McCains.” ~ George Takei ~
    3. “BREAKING NEWS: Dolly Parton reveals that she reinvested all of her royalties from Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ into America’s underserved Black communities. RETWEET IF YOU’RE PROUD OF DOLLY FOR LEADING BY EXAMPLE ~ Occupy Democrats ~
    4. Thank you @SenSchumer for showing up to express support for our movement. We need all hands on deck for a federal eviction moratorium now. ~ Cori Bush ~
    5.  When asked about Governor Ron DeSantis rebuking the President re: the pandemic: “Governor who?”  ~ President Joe Biden.

    • TJI #1 – Props to Don for grasping that without even being a woman, That’s very perdeptive. I need to look up some of his books if he’s that perceptive.
TJI #2 – Even if parents personally have honor and principles, it can be very tricky to transmit them to children if the parents also have a conservative political philosophy. Conservatism even at its best does not lend itself to instilling principle.
TJI #3 – I can’t twwe or retweet, but I certainly can be proud of belonging to the same nation to which she belongs (and which should horon her more.)
TJI #4 – Good for Chuck. He really does do the best he can.
TJI #5 – Not his GOAT zinger, but still vert nice.

    • TJI #1 – Pattern?  Hell, it’s their bedrock!

TJI # 5 – Anything that mocks & singes Ron DeathSantis is appreciated.

  4. TJI#1: Don is certainly on to something.  Bigots and misogynists make up their ranks!
TJI#2: George is on to something there, as well.
    TJI#3: Dolly Rocks!
TJI#4: Schumer is not so bad, either.
TJI#5: Did he really?  How sweet!  I may just have to take a selfie, as I vote to oust him, in ’22!

  5. Cartoon: Looking at this painting it is understandable that the GQP harkens back to those times. They were all white, they were all male and they were all rich. The GQP forgets one thing, though. They weren’t all stupid.

TH: A lot of speculation, which is understandable since it took nearly 8 months to start an investigation, but I won’t allow get my hopes up too high. This has taken all far too long and the public interest can be held only so long.

    TNY: Sounds like a plan.

HP: I’m deeply saddened by the emotional toll caring for anti-vaxxers in an ICU must take on these unsung heroes. They gave up their way of life and often their lives to fight the COVID battle. Seeing light at the end of the tunnel after the first wave was what kept them going. But it must be incredibly hard to give the same amount of care to people who chose not to be vaccinated and now come in for treatment, putting the staff in the ICU at risk by their very presence. And then having to wade through the piled-up QAnon rubbish to be able to give the right care at all…It is heartbreaking.

FFT: Humour always does the trick for me.

  6. The Hill: I hope they do follow thru. tRump, his rotten R’s and other buddies has gotten away with way too much.
    TNY: Worth considering.
HP: I still can’t believe that there all of these anti-vaxxers. Being so ignorant of the facts, especially now with the new Delta variant out there. I guess they really don’t give a damn about their lives or the lives of their family or friends.
    Food for Thought: Great one.
Glad the weather is being kind to you.
It was a little cooler here too. Next week we’re suppose to be back to the 90’s again.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne
