Yesterday I woke up, logged in, and realized the Open Thread had not published when I wanted it to because I had a typographical error in the schedule. Sorry to all. I’ll try to proofread better! Otherwise, the day went fine.

Cartoon – blood wedding

Short Takes –

Fascist Goons Disrupt Katie Porter Town Hall, Welcome To Post-January 6 GOP Politics
Quote – Yes, she ran toward the trouble to protect people. She’s even a hero when she doesn’t have her white board handy. Porter told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell Monday night that she was worried for the safety of a couple of attendees “who were using walkers, who couldn’t move out of the way,” and that she simply wanted to be sure they weren’t knocked over while police were on the way.
Click through for details and for a short video from Lawrence O’Donnell. Katie is a superb negotiator. But no one can negotiate with these – people. Holding back tears of anger.

Daily Beast – Lego Tells U.S. Company to Stop Making Gun That Looks Like Child’s Toy
Quote – Culper Precision of Utah has been producing a pistol that looks like a kid’s toy made of Lego blocks, saying that its “Glock 19” weapon was made to show people that firearms are “for everyone” and that shooting things is “SUPER FUN!”
Click through for more, including actual photo and link to Washington Post. Unbelievable.

The Hill – US to evacuate Afghans who assisted US military
Quote – Flights out of Afghanistan for those who are already in the process of obtaining special immigrant visas (SIVs) will start in the last week of July, a senior administration official said in a statement.
Click through for what details are available. We knew this was going to be done, but there were no details available, and only a few now, but it’s clear the dates have been moved up.

Food for Thought (probably not true. I have changed a little bit – but not much – possibly not even all in the same direction.):

  1. ‘Toon: Is this the basis for the opera “Blood Wedding?”
Fascist Goons: I do hope these bastards get a taste of American jurisprudence!
DB: What in hell is  “10/10 meme gun” supposed to mean?  Now that production has been “suspended,” does that mean that there are these cutesy little machines of death floating around in the world?  Might they resume production, down the deadly road? Does humankind deserve to survive?
TH: It is not new news that the Taliban has been virtually overrunning the country.  I’ll bet that whatever Kurds are still alive, in Syria, are feeling newly miffed.
FFT: I was never a “moderate Democrat,” but I certainly see the wisdom behind this meme.  Those of you who pray, do it with some added fervor.  A neighbor, here, has finally realized that the “God Bless America” flag they put out a couple of weeks ago was backwards on it’s little pole, and have fixed it.  If God was interested in blessing America He/She would NOT have allowed Putin to install TOT!

I wish I could say it’s going to get better – but I fear not.  (GQP really does hate strong, intelligent women.  Actually they hate all women – but particularly strong and intelligent ones.)

Lego Tells U.S. Company to Stop Making Gun That Looks Like Child’s Toy

Fortunately they have.  But WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

US to evacuate Afghans who assisted US military

Good.  We owe it to them!

  3. I’m so late in reading that I’m never bothered by any article published “late”, Joanne.

Cartoon: I was confused by both the image used for the cartoon (Raphael’s Deposition [Pala Baglione ](1507)) and its historic event which I didn’t know about and after reading https://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2015/07/this-day-in-history-july-15th-a-bloody-wedding/ I was none the wiser. But a description of the painting and its origins tied them together. The painting is the central panel of a larger altarpiece commissioned by Atalanta Baglioni of Perugia in honour of her slain son, Grifonetto Baglioni, the groom who was slain so horrifically in the massacre.

Wonkette: As my A(Aussie)BC kept telling me last week, nearly 600 people have been indicted over January 6th but only one person has been convicted until now. Unless the law seriously clamps down on these people, and above all on the ringleaders, i.e. the inciters in Congress and WH, these terrorists – they are terrorising people, aren’t they? – will continue to try to intimidate those they hate the most. And yes, that would be strong, intelligent women like Katie Porter. Kudos to her for standing up to them.

DB: When I read this in a news item that made it all the way Down Under about this, my first thought was how wrong this is on both sides. Glockner for producing a gun that endangers the life of every kid playing with a Lego gun and Lego for producing a set for kids that is an exact replica of a Glockner. Your obsession with guns knows no boundaries, America.

TH: Better late than never. I hope this slow reaction doesn’t cost any (extra) lives, considering the Taliban has already taken over more than 3/4 of the country. Could America also urge Australia to do the same for their interpreters and other aid? Our government is still debating it and will do so until they’ve all been killed and then “apologise”.

FFT: Well done, Joanne. It reflects America’s shift to the right all to well now.

    • Lego had no part of this.  Lego saw it, freaked out, and sent them a “cease and desist” letter.  I mean, Lego is just a corporation – but it has its limits which apparently Glockner doesn’t.

      • The corporation Lego started it with selling a kit that made something very much like a Glockner. It wasn’t just kids putting something together from scratch, but the gave the blueprint and parts like a trigger to make it specifically look like a Glockner.

  4. Cartoon: Yikes, so deadly.
Wonkette: I have to agree with Nameless and Lona that things aren’t going to get better, until they start charging these terrorists to the fullest. If they would put some of them away for a good length of time, maybe these other goons would wise up and stop their violent acts.
DB: Seen this yesterday. I honestly thought they stopped creating gun related toys. I know when my son was younger, I never allowed him to play with toy guns.
TH: Glad to hear it. I too pray that they’re safe over there with the Taliban already taking over so much.
Seeing yesterday’s posting later than usual wasn’t a problem for me neither. I was only concerned if you were doing okay health wise.
Hope your day was pleasant.  Take care. Thanks Joanne

    • This isn’t a toy, but a real gun, made to look like a toy to attract kids.  Lego freaked out when they saw it, and started by sending a “cease and desist” letter whch was actually polite, and thank God it was neough for Glockner to stop making and marketing – at least for now.    If they try to start uop again, lego will have a great case to sue the pants and maybe some skinf off of them, and I think they know it, or at least their lawyers do.  But good grief.
