I thik I have today covered … always extra posts on weekends. If you don’t get my emails (or if you do but don’t want to wait for it) be sure to see WWWendy’s “Hello Again” post. There is now something we can do. Happy Juneteenth (actual.) I shall be making do with Fruit Punch Gatorade (not my choice, it was an unauthorized substitution in a delivery) and strawberry soda (at least that was my choice.)

Short Takes

The Bitter Southerner – Juneteenth Jubilee. One tradition for celebrating Juneteenth is eating red food and drinking red beverages. This mixologist has a special recipe (doesn’t have to be “adult”).
Quote: According to culinary historian Adrian Miller, red drinks — which rule the bar at Juneteenth parties — have their roots in West African and Caribbean beverages that came to the United States through the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved people stewed hibiscus flowers to make a reddish-purple tea called bissap, Miller points out, and they mixed powdered kola nut (one of the ingredients in Coca-Cola) with water to make a refreshing, naturally stimulating drink. This practice of adding reddish substances to make sweet, palatable drinks was common and naturally made its way to the Juneteenth celebration table. Soon, red-colored drinks — like the Texas-made soda Big Red, introduced in 1937 — had become part of the Juneteenth culinary tradition.

Crooks and Liars – Florida Republican Threatens To Send Russian-Ukrainian ‘Hit Squad’ After Rival. Yes, you read that right.
Quote – “I really don’t want to have to end anybody’s life for the good of the people of the United States of America,” Braddock said at one point in the conversation last week, according to the recording exclusively obtained by POLITICO. “That will break my heart. But if it needs to be done, it needs to be done. Luna is a f—ing speed bump in the road. She’s a dead squirrel you run over every day when you leave the neighborhood.”

Wonkette – Yay! House Votes To Repeal Bad Iraq War Authorization. In case this got lost in other news, I wanted to highlight it in Wonkette’s distinctive style.
Quote – [McConell] is correct. To borrow a turn of phrase, it should not be tossed aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force. But we should thank Mitch for his opposition to this. The only people who have been held to account for their bad Iraq War votes have been Democrats. As soon as things turned bad, the Right went from worshiping Dubya to “We don’t know her” and pretending that Hillary Clinton was personally responsible for the whole thing happening in the first place. This way, Republicans voting against this can be held to account for their votes against a thing that absolutely no one wants anymore. More of this, please.

  1. Cartoon: Thank you! Ms. Lee for your assistance in making this Holiday/recognition come true!
Bitter Southerner: How interesting! Love Big Red, btw…
C&L: Holy Moly! I’m glad that she got a stalking injunction against this guy…what in the sam hill is wrong with these people??
Cartoon: I agree. The struggle is real, and it continues.

Gotta run, got two children’s BB games to watch this morning/afternoon. YAY!

This just in: 1. “The political advocacy group backed by billionaire Charles Koch has been pressuring Sen. Joe Manchin to oppose key parts of the Democratic agenda, including filibuster reform and voting rights legislation. That lobbying effort appears to be paying off.” ~ Rachel Maddow ~
    2. “Donald Trump should bring along $560,000 to pay off an outstanding debt, when he visits the US – Mexico border later this month.” ~ El Paso County Judge Richardo Samaniego ~
    3. “The people in power can’t keep the power on for the people of Texas. It’s the incompetence & corruption in the absence of accountability. That’s why we fight for voting rights in Texas. A true democracy will ensure our leaders respond to the people they’re supposed to serve. ~ Beto O’Rourke
    4. “BREAKING: ERCOT is now asking people to conserve electricity through Friday, saying there are a significant number of power plants offline and expecting possible record use for June. ~ Matt Largey ~
    5. Re: Joe Biden – “He perfectly knows the matter. he is fully concentrated and knows what he wwants to achieve. And he does it very shrewdly.” ~ Vladimir Putin ~

    • TJI #1 – I always felt and occasionally said that David looked to be the angrier one, but that Charles with hisperpetual smile was the one to worry about.
TJI #2 – Does Texas have any debtors’ prisons? If so, this would be a great opportunity.
TJI #3 and 4 – The people in power in Texas gave away Texas’s power grid to private parties, proving once again that privatization results in costing more and providing less.
TJI #5 – Kind of him to say so. Is this a record for truth from Putin in one sentence?

    • TJI#1: Charles Koch has been the Grand Pupeteer behind MUCH of the right-wing-bigoted tsunami of the last 40 years!
TJI#2: Yeah, right!  Oh, debtors prisons, what a nice idea.
      TJI#3: Beto for governor!
TJI#4: Privatization has been the conservative wet dream for ever, more evidence that they have NEVER known what the hell they’ve been talking about.
TJI#5: Uh, oh, does Donnie know that Putin recognizes that we have a new president?  One with a working brain, even?

    • TJI#2: Agree 100%. tRump has gotten away with never paying people for services that they’ve done for him. I like what Joanne mentioned about, Debtors prison. Perfect place for him.
TJI#3: Shameful what’s happening in Texas. Agree with Mitch, Beto for Governor.
TJI#4: Insane. Power grids offline??? Were these planned or what? Insane.
TJI#5: pUtin better realize that we had a Real President that know his business. Not fake.
Hope you enjoyed the two BB games you were going to. Hope they won. 18

    • TJI #1: As I’ve said before, follow the money on Manchin.

TJI #2: Yeah, as if the former guy paid any of his debts. How about suing him for the money instead of letting him rally there again?

TJI #3 &4: Beto rules, and I’m very sorry for any Democrats suffering through the shortages in Texas.

TJI #5: Sounds to me that Putin just threw the Republican’s plan to have Biden’s mental fitness tested out of the window.

  2. Yes, I would say that you have today covered.
    ‘Toon: Quite a lady!
ST: Talk about the things I did not know I did not know!  I never heard of the drink(s) before, and find the story really interesting.
C&L: Floriduh!  This Braddock needs to be indicted.  It’s like TOT got into the heads of sooo many total, frigging crazies.
Wonkette: I was pissed at Pelosi, back in 2002, when she stupidly gave Dubya “Carte Blanche” in response the 9/11 attack.  You don’t give the currently biggest jackass the run of the circus tent!
‘Toon #2: The struggle is probably going to be virtually endless, sadly.

  3. Cartoon: Bless Opal Lee for all that she has done throughout life ever since her family’s house was burned down when she was 12. She’s fought ever since to make this a day a holiday. I commend her for all that she has done.
    I too say “Happy Juneteenth”.
The Bitter Southerner: Interesting. Wasn’t that familiar with the Red Drink until I read the article.
C&L: What a dirty rotten GOP bas*ard bRaddock is. I’m happy that she was able to get the judge to issue an injunction against him for threatening her. It’s getting really bad when candidates have to be so flipping low down to try and win. Seems like another idiot who doesn’t deserve the right to even run.
Food for Thought: So true. We must continue to fight together.
Hope you had a pleasant day.
We’re experiencing high heat here in San Diego. It’s suppose to stick around till the middle of next week.
    Take care. Thanks Joanne

  4. TBS: Happy Juneteenth.

C&L: And after this, Braddock is still a candidate? Only in Florida…

Wonkette: Kudos to Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee for pulling that off in the House.

    FFT: Amen.

  5. Worthy selections Joanne.
In this past year or so, an awful lot of people and organizations have sought to learn the history not learned in school with a proliferation of writers penning articles sharing that history and others creating documentaries so it has remained newsworthy all year and this holiday will ensure at least once a year it gets attention again.  With the internet, such information has become far easier to find even beyond the 1619 project.  That means that we can continue to ensure more people learn the history shaping the realities of today along with parents ensuring their children do if their schools are not teaching it.
It is possible a similar body of work will continue to grow around anti-AAPI hate and their history in this country, too.
Braddock is an example of the kind of intense/extreme push-back against progress that emerges whenever persons of color make progress in this country which often gets personalized and mixed with personal goals.  Thankfully restraining orders against him were easy to get.
While I’m glad that war authorization is ending, its use has been rare compared to the one on terrorism which if repealed would be expected to do far more to restore credibility to a claim that our foreign policy is going to become moral and compliant with the law again.
