It’d a busy day here in the CatBox.  WWWendy is finishing it up after giving me a haircut, my shower, putting groceries away and cooking.  I’m running way behind.  I’ll be in the saddle tomorrow.  Hugs to all.

Short Takes:

From NY Times: The top Democrats in Congress on Wednesday endorsed a bipartisan $908 billion stimulus compromise as a baseline for talks, offering a significant concession in an effort to pressure Republicans to revive stalled talks on providing additional relief before the end of the year.

After months of publicly insisting that another stimulus package must provide at least $2 trillion, Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, called on Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, to return to the negotiating table with a bill less than half that size as a starting point.

President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., whose advisers had pushed privately in recent weeks for lawmakers to make compromises to pass an economic aid agreement as quickly as possible, also offered a blessing of sorts for the effort. In a virtual event with laid-off workers and a small-business owner struggling amid the pandemic, Mr. Biden said the bipartisan package “wouldn’t be the answer, but it would be immediate help for a lot of things, quickly.”

The measure, spearheaded by Senator Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, and Senator Susan Collins, Republican of Maine, would restore lapsed federal jobless benefits, providing $300 a week for 18 weeks; would include $288 billion for struggling small businesses, restaurants and theaters and $160 billion for fiscally strapped cities and states; and would create a temporary liability shield for businesses operating amid the pandemic.

I would happily back it except for one thing. It gives criminal immunity to business owners and managers who knowingly commit crimes while following the directives of the Republican Reich. For example, Tyson foods maintain executive betting pools on how many employees will be infected and on how many will die because of their unsafe working conditions.  RESIST!!

From YouTube (a blast for the planet): Climate change song “The Shadows” by Sandel

The writer/singer calls climate change the greatest threat of our age. This hi her response, and a fine one it is!  RESIST!!

  1. Cartoon: How downright sad, and awful!  Despicable!
NYT: Anything, as this point, would be beneficial to and for our suffering neighbors. btw…BBMM is not helping either. What a vile human being.
YT: Yes, I’m afraid for the future too. Very scary, and the sadness we w/leave for generations behind us.

HI, WWWendy. Seems like you had a very busy day today. I hope that you get a chance to nap and rest, and take good, good care, Thanks, Tom.

  2. Yeah, I hear you. I had to put groceries away too. i haven’t finished putting away all the beverages yet, but all the frozen stuff is in the freezer and all the refrigerated stuff is in the refrigerator, and I have all the rest off the porch and in the house. The Video Thread may be later than usual.

    Eighty-one million.

John Pavlovitz. From November 9 but of enduring validity – and comfort – and need-to-know.

Cartoon – I’ll bet they wouldn’t have if all the lives were added to the losses. At semi-appropriate rates (since there is no appropriate rate for a human life.)

NYT – I am so tired of being blackmailed, and I know Chuck and Nancy are too, though they can’t say it. They must feel like shift-working no-regular-schedule single parents struggling to feed their children with no guarantee they are even going to have any hours next week – the children, in this case, being us.

Blast – I don’t think we should wait for “big men” to lead – but to cease following, and instead go where we need to go. Let them follow – or not.

  3. Our country is in dire need of another stimulus.  And while the $908 billion compromise is far from perfect, it’s at least a starting point.

(While Democrats are loathe to agree to even the temporary liability shield, at least it’s not a blanket immunity.  It does not provide any protection for “gross negligence” or “willful misconduct”.  Still too much, but at least the asses of the Tyson execs will still be in a sling.)

    • It depends on which version is closer to the final bill.  The House version is the one you describe.  The BBMMM version is far worse. 21

  4. You must feel much better now, TomCat, after a shower and with your whiskers trimmed.

    3:25 That’ll take care of snack-time for a couple of days…

Cartoon: One of those things corporations get away with. Cheap labour and no value to (human) life…those workers and their families were literally dispensable and still are.

NYT: It’s better than nothing but don’t let Republicans take the credit; they were the ones that walked away from the negotiating table.

    BFTP: Great song!
One of the texts said “Outlook poor for the Great Barrier Reef, 2009”. That was 11 years ago.
Yesterday the text said “The Great Barrier Reef’s classification worsens to “critical”, with climate change named the biggest threat to the planet’s natural world heritage by a UNESCO advisory body report.” DAMN.

  5. Cartoon: Despicable.
NYT: They keep mentioning that they’re getting close. Sure hope they do so, soon. People have been suffering long enough, thanks to mItch the bi*ch and the rest of the rotten R’s sitting on it all this time.
BFTP: Great video and song. Will be nice when Joe and Kamala are in office and they get moving on doing more for the Climate.
Wow.. Sounds like you had a very busy day. You and Wendy got a lot accomplished today. Plus you even got your hair cut too.  Nice.
Hope the rest of your day went well. That you get some rest tonight,Take care. Thanks TomCat
