Oscar-winner Emma Thompson stars in new Extinction Rebellion film

This As Seen from Afar will take the form of a ‘short take’ of an article published  on the euronews site by *

[Yesterday has seen] the release of a new short film starring Emma Thompson about Extinction Rebellion. The film depicts a fictionalised version of the protests held by the activist group last April, which culminated in the UK becoming the first country to formally declare a climate emergency. [Italics mine]

The double Academy Award winner took part in last year’s climate protests, which saw parts of the UK’s capital grind to a halt during a fortnight of continuous civil disobedience. It was during this time that the short film, entitled Extinction, was shot.

The 12-minute production tells the story of a group of climate activists meeting with the Environment Minister in the midst of an ongoing rebellion.

Emma Thompson explained the importance of both the piece and the movement more generally, saying, “Everything depends on what we do now. In a crisis, you have to convince people to take positive and immediate action. The suffragettes taught us that. You have to be active in your disobedience.

“How we respond to the coronavirus crisis is a test run for how we need to respond to the climate crisis, and we see the same forces attempting to obscure and to undermine science in pursuit of perpetual growth and private profit. Whatever happens next, we can be sure that ‘business as usual’ is no longer tenable.” Film Co-writer Sam Haygarth

  1. Liked the video, and the analogy between the Star Wars rebellion, and the current crisis in our world.

    Excellent piece, Lona, Thank you!
Good job, Emma! and cast too!

  2. Sitting here, having become rather inflamed at the well acted government puppet, who is all about “Business as usual.”  Once again, I will comment that Mick Jagger, upon leaving jail, and having the ear of the then PM, now what seems like ages ago, ought to have “We are about not going on with ‘Business as usual,’ after 2 major world wars, is what we want.” Not his stupid “We just want to have fun.”
We have to cuddle up to Mother Nature, drop the hubris and recognize that we are not in charge, rather than try to rule her.  We have to stop the “Military Industrial Complex” before it stops us with bombs or with bio-warfare, accidental, or not.
    Great choice for posting, Lona!

  3. Oh, Lona, so sorry I didn’t see this and failed to include it in my email!  Something this interesting and important needs to be seen.

    • If you have ever wondered what Colonel Jessep would have looked like if “A Few Good Men” were a British film, look no further.  Chilling.

The entire human race needs a suicide intervention, and fast.  And how the hell do we do that?  I guess this is a start.

  4. I loved this.

What Climate Change and Trump Virus have in common is that either could become an ELE, and the the Republican Reich (and their worldwide equivalents) are so ignorant and evil that everything they do moves us toward that outcome. 04

  5. Thanks Lona–I will return to view the video with my brunch.  This is an area getting better attention in the UK than is true in the US despite both leaders being said to have similarities.
