The New York Times has a comprehensive look this morning at the timeline and actions surrounding the withholding of aid to Ukraine, and I strongly suggest you read it all. But this was the ultimate in political appointees (most with personal and professional ties to Mick Mulvaney) creating rationales to justify whatever Trump wanted: Just ignore the law! Like the political operatives they are, they had little interest in whether there was a valid legal basis for their arguments, they just wanted something that sounded good enough to sell, and came up with something that cemented Trump’s vision of himself as a monarch, unaccountable to anyone:
By late summer, top lawyers at the budget office were developing a proposed legal justification for the hold, based in part on conversations with White House lawyers as well as the Justice Department.
Their argument was that lifting the hold would undermine Mr. Trump’s negotiating position in his efforts to fight corruption in Ukraine.
The president, the lawyers believed, could ignore the requirements of the Impoundment Control Act and continue to hold the aid by asserting constitutional commander in chief powers that give him authority over diplomacy. He could do so, they believed, if he determined that, based on existing circumstances, releasing the money would undermine military or diplomatic efforts.

And there are still “pundits,” along with trills, and no doubt a crowd of misogynists, saying every day that Speaker Pelosi (and “the Democrats”) shouldn’t have impeached, should have waited, should have impeached faster, should have investigated more, should have added more articles, should not have written any articles, should have included an article for this and/or an article for that, should be sending over the Articles right now, should be holding off on sending the Articles, should never send the Articles – oh, and how only “the Democrats” could manage to screw up a perfectly good impeachment. And that’s not counting all the things “the Democrats” are doing wrong for the 2020 Presidential election. Don’t you wish they would all just SHUT UP? Even if only for a week or so?

They came up with more emails and phone calls that give more evidence of tRump’s wrongdoings.
We know that tRump and his cronies are going to continue down their evil paths.
So I’m happy Nancy P. is standing up against these evil mobsters, taking her lovely time. The more they dig up on them all, the better we will all be.
We should be glad for every day Nancy Pelosi doesn’t hand over the Articles of Impeachment because that is another day to investigate everything that went on, especially the cover-ups and the things the White House is doing today. It is clear that #IMPOTUS is continuing along the same line because his minions and sycophants tell him what he wants to hear. #IMPOTUS is convinced he can do whatever he likes, and Putin will have strengthened him in that delusion in his last phone call.
My fervent hope: *Rump’s Senate forgone “exoneration” is NOT a done-deal by the time of his SOTU.
I hope Speaker Pelosi keeps the ball in her court long enough to ensure that he will NOT be able to brag about being “exonerated” during his SOTU.
