It’s another cold day here in the CatBox, but upgraded to Winter Storm Watch from Winter Storm Warning.  It’s a slow day for news, but I found material for you.  Kudos to the Denver teachers.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:37 (average 5:20).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (Parody Project Channel): FIFTY WAYS TO LEAVE A DONOR – Parody

Thanks Don. Corporate and billionaire donations come with no strings. The Pope is not Catholic. And bears never, ever shit in the woods. (Don replied, “And surfers never pee in the ocean.” I responded, Only when standing on surfboards.”) RESIST!!

From YouTube (CNN Channel): Amy Klobuchar throws her hat in the 2020 ring

If she gets the nomination, I’ll support her, but there are more progressive, less corporatist, candidates I prefer. RESIST!!

From Washington PostThe last government shutdown may have ended just a few weeks ago, but odds are escalating that another one is just around the corner. With negotiators skeptical that a deal can be struck before Tuesday, it looks as if another shutdown will begin Friday night. So Republicans are going back to scaremongering about violent immigrants.

President Trump set the tone early Sunday morning, tweeting [traitor delinked] that Democrats “want a cap on convicted violent felons to be held in detention!” Republicans on the Sunday talk shows echoed him: “How in the world after that speech does he sign a bill that would reduce the bed spaces available for violent offenders?” asked Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) on Fox’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” referring to Trump’s State of the Union address. “We got some problems with the Democrats dealing with [Immigration and Customs Enforcement], that is detaining criminals that come into the U.S. and they want a cap on them, we don’t want a cap on that,” said Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) on “Fox News Sunday.”

“Protections for violent offenders” sure sounds like an odd stance for a political party to take. So it should be no surprise that it’s not accurate. Yes, Democrats want to cap the number of unauthorized immigrants that ICE can detain at any given time. But the proposed cap — 16,500 — matches the level of detentions inside the United States in recent years. By capping the number, Democrats want ICE to focus on violent illegal immigrants, not waste resources arresting a mother in San Diego in front of her family or holding parents separated from their children.

So the Democratic ask isn’t for protection for “violent offenders.” And it is also quite small. Besides, why wouldn’t Democrats ask for something? Republicans are asking for money for a border wall and in exchange they will not shut the government down … again. Voters gave Democrats the House last fall — it seems only reasonable that they would want something to show for it.

Assuming you have heard just the Republican lies, as I had before researching the issue, you now know how to counter them. RESIST!!

  1. 5:24 Pretty.

Petition to Oregon Dept. of Ag. on a tree-killing pesticide.

Other PP – ♫ This is right on, Don. ♬

Amy – Exactly what you said, TC

WaPo – Thank you for this. If course it’s easy to tell the Repub points are lies, because whay would we want what they say we do? We don’t. But it’s noce to have positive points.

Cartoon – I would have expected him to be a Tory.

  2. It is absurd that teachers are paid so little when the service they provide is so vital. This is not to say that they should be given sky-high salaries, just enough to lead a decent lifestyle. Anybody who thinks teachers are overpaid has not walked one step in their shoes.

Our campaign finance system needs a serious overhaul. The plutocracy that oppresses us can be overthrown – but only if WE THE PEOPLE rise up, raise hell, support genuinely progressive candidates, and get out the vote!

The Rethuglicans will grasp at any straw to get their way and make Democrats look bad.

  3. *Signed petition, thx, Joanne.

PP: Well sung, played, and said.

CNN: I have a wait and see .. for right now.

WP: They own this, (just like last time). Trying to play the blame game, when it’s all on them. (R’s) ugh!

    Cartoon: Absolutely.

Yes, kudos to those teachers/staff who battled the cold, and protested. I like her sign, and hope for the best!

We’re at 64 here w/showers. Supposed to be like this, all week. Hope that you are staying warm, and comfy. Enjoy your evening, take good care, and Thanks, Tom.

This just in: “Undocumented immigrants commit crimes at a considerably lower rate than the election campaign staff of D.J.T.” ~ Brenda M. ~

  4. I like Sen. Klobuchar A LOT!  Some of it is we share solid Midwestern roots, a lot of it is she has a long history of solid performance.

What concerns me is this history of berating her staff.  It’s fine that she has high expectations of the folks she works with – she should.  But it would only take one video of her in a screaming fit to do a huge disservice to Democrats were she the candidate.

  5. PPC: Saw it on e-mail, sent it around, figured you’d have it here…love it!
CNN-Amy K.- I will vote for whomever gets the Dem nod, hope AOC gets re-elected in 2020, and may be able to run for Pres. in 2024, but who knows what will happen by then.  I just do not want the demo to shoot themselves in the foot, by the election, most of all!
WP: “Republican lies” are all one hears from the GOPIGGIES!”  Their spokespersons, Like Graham, are nothing but more polished liars than Drumph.
‘Toon: A day of infamy!  While tomorrow is the B’dy of 2 great men…Lincoln and Darwin!

  6. 3:07 Water lilies, not of the lotus kind though, so we can stay alert.

PP: Don’s is an excellent addition to AOC’s video, kudos! And he’s an excellent producer too, he manages to sound quite a bit like Paul Simon. ?

CNN: I wish she hadn’t thrown that hat. Not progressive enough and too many candidates already. While I hope she doesn’t get the Democratic nomination, she would of course be better than any Republican.

WP: Our national news (ABC) had an item with a correspondent in the US going along the border with Mexico, interviewing border security workers, immigrants – which were extremely hard to find, certainly not in a caravan of thousands – and even updated with this news, showing the Republican lies in every shot. The correspondent must have been working on it right up to the last minute, but it is sad that Aussies are better informed about American politics if they watch national broadcasts than many Americans are. It’s time for (the return) of some really independent and impartial media, America.

Cartoon: The world would be a better place if Elbridge Gerry had not chosen a political career, or was thrown by his horse as soon as the first spark of this idea entered his mind.

  7. ” Let the billionaires sob, Bob, Put an end to their snow job”! ?
” Be like AOC, Lee, Let that be the key”!
    Love it!!

  8. PP: Right on Don..
CNN: Seen Amy’s speech yesterday and she was impressive, but like you point out there’s going to be more progressive candidates running. We will certainly be doing our homework well before it’s time to vote.
WP: Too much garbage going on all because of his stupid funding for a useless Wall. Supposedly tonight they were saying that they might of reach some sort of agreement to avoid a shutdown on Friday. Will hear more tomorrow, So I pray that’s it’s a true fact…no shutdown.
My best to the teachers out there in Denver on strike/ I’ve heard that the students are joining in on the strike too. Power to them all.

  9. Puzzle — 4:04 Beautiful but they can be deadly if you get your legs etc caught in their rhizomes.  Fish love to hide beneath them in their shadows.

Parody Project — Fifty ways to leave a donor . . . but the only one that counts is the one that is permanent!

CNN — As per usual, Trump responded with a tweet, one of his nicer ones, if he has any.  What an unintelligent, misogynistic, narcissistic cretin he is!  She showed she has more and bigger balls than he does . . . even if they are snow balls.  She is loving it and I think the snow is emblematic of her fight and toughness!  Trump is a wimp!

    Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump
Well, it happened again. Amy Klobuchar announced that she is running for President, talking proudly of fighting global warming while standing in a virtual blizzard of snow, ice and freezing temperatures. Bad timing. By the end of her speech she looked like a Snowman(woman)!
    2:04 PM – 10 Feb 2019

If I could vote and Klobuchar were the Democrat nominee, I’d vote for her.  However Liz and/or Bernie are really where it is for this social democrat Canadian.

Washington Post — When is a Republican not a Republican?  . . . when his mouth is closed and there is no sound emanating from him, not even a hum!

Cartoon — No doubt there!  Gerrymandering should be outlawed by any and all parties!

Well it snowed yesterday afternoon and it kept on until after midnight.  That’s when the ploughs came out and went all night.  Unfortunately, I heard them (my home backs onto an arterial route) so the sleep was lacking.  It looks like it is starting to snow again.  We will see what happens tomorrow.  I have a meeting tomorrow evening so if the snow is bad, I’ll stay home.  I don’t worry about my driving but I do worry about that of others.  Mad dogs  and Englishmen!

  10. Petition signed.  Thank you Joanne.

PP:  Another great one by Don.

CNN:  Not my firsy choice but if she gets the nomination, I’ll vote for her.

WP:  I agree with you Pat.

    Thank you TomCat.

  11. Thanks and tired hugs to all. 23
