It’s another cool morning here in the CatBox, but with a high in the 80°s, I’ll have to button up when the sun hits the wall.  WWWendy is due in about thirty minutes, and I’ll finish this after she leaves.

WWWendy just left, and I’m so pooped I’m bleary eyed.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 5:46 (average 5:47).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From YouTube (A blast from the past): Buffalo Springfield – For What It’s Worth 1967

I see this one as a memory of the importance of resistance. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From NY Times: Racist robocalls targeting Andrew Gillum, the first black nominee for Florida governor from a major party, have been placed to residents from an out-of-state white supremacist entity.

Mr. Gillum, 39, the Tallahassee mayor and a progressive candidate who won an upset victory in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, will face Representative Ron DeSantis, 39, a Republican who embraced the style and policies of President Trump, in the November election.

In the audio of one robocall placed on Friday and obtained by The New York Times, a man pretending to be Mr. Gillum can be heard talking in the exaggerated accent of a minstrel performer. “Well hello there,” it begins, “I is Andrew Gillum.” He then talks for a little over a minute about mud huts and unfair policing practices, and asks repeatedly for the listener’s vote. In the background are the sounds of drums and monkeys.

This is the best that Republicans have to offer. RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

From Raw Story: [S]upporters of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) have been deluged by signs for challenger Beto O’Rourke and are furious at his campaign for mismanaging the situation, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

According to the paper, Beto’s distinctive black-and-white yards signs have “seemingly dominated the landscape” in the state.

Cruz’s signs are rarely spotted, and his supporters are reportedly “increasingly agitated,” partly because Cruz’s campaign refuses to prove his supporters with signs.

Hey Cruz! Put a Beto sign in Uranus! RESIST!! VOTE BLUE!!

  1. 7:58 At least, of all the things on my to-do-list, protecting a pair of wagon wheels from being eaten by a cat is not one of them.

There are certainly many things going on which in the long run may cause more problems, but, dammit, this gripes me.

    Follow-up on this week’s Erinyes.

    This. Is. Amazing.

    YT – Oh, yes.

NYT – This in itself doesn’t scare me as much as wondering who would look (or I guess listen) favorably on something like this – and how many are there. And – is that really the best they’ve got, or are they pretending it is in order to lull us into complacency, and planning to come out with something else later?

RS – I feel fairly good about Beto’s chances. He is doing things the rght way, that is for sure.

Cartoon – It certainly was. They had no clue what they had going there,, and they threw it away.

  2. Many of the protest songs from the 1960s are even more relevant today than when they first came out. Rise up, everyone, resist, persist, insist, and above all, VOTE!

I am certainly dismayed, but not too surprised (unfortunately!) that some orcs are sending racist robocalls attacking Andrew Gillum. Let us hope this rotten tactic backfires in the worst way possible. Imagine the Deep South with TWO African-American governors: Gillum, and Stacey Abrams in Georgia!

The cartoon is a heartbreaker. That was a dark, dark day. Then came the 1970s and lots of Star Trek wannabes that failed: UFO, Space: 1999, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

  3. YT: Timeless, great song!!

NYT: I’m so happy that Mr. Gillum won, it’s vile that people would stoop this low tho. Seems the republicons are nervous all around, and stooping pretty low in the gutter now.

RS: This is wonderful, and the Resistance is alive and well here in TX. Yard signs are not allowed where I live, (HOA), but we put Beto signs up anyway.
BTW: Avenatti is going to hold a Resistance Rally the same night that Cruz/Trump are having their campaign rally. (tba)
    http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/404767-avenatti-to-hold-resistance-rally-in-texas-the-same-night-as-trumps

Cartoon: I was an avid fan of StarTrek, I remember them doing this…why?? WHY???

Hi, WWWendy! It was gloomy and windy, but no rain, dammit! Hope that you have a relaxing evening, take care, and Thanks, Tom.

This just in: Putin and Trump sitting together in chairs. Putin: “I watched the McCain funeral, very, very nice.”Trump: “Yeah, I might have to be buried in Russia, to get the huge audience that he got.”

  4. Y/T: Sadly wise, and reminds me of Steppenwolf’s wish “…that we never get fooled again.”  So much for prayer!
NYT: “When will we ever learn.”
RS: “Schadenfreude, my schadenfreude, I hope to see you soon, my schadenfreude.”
‘Toon: And NBC was not even owned by disney!

  5. WOW Buffalo Springfield, a very relevant blast from the past, fashions change human traits do not!
Disgusting racist robocalls ? i had heard, Sheryl has posted something about it!
It has to start getting cooler for you, we are slowly warming up, YAY!!! ?

  6. i also voted in the poll, so good to see i’m in sync with everyone else here!!

  7. YT: This song was a little before my “understand English and get the message” time at 12-years old, but when I hear it in the background (truth) during a pub lunch last week I immediately knew it was Buffalo Springfield’s and told hubby it was a “protest song” from the 60s. It has always been a favorite of mine, though I have no idea when I picked up on it. A timeless song with a message relevant to every generation, I guess.

NYT: My goodness, how pathetic can you get. But I bet Florida’s white supremacists are laughing their socks off when they get/hear this call, although most of them will have to hear it twice before they get the “joke”; too highbrow for them.

RS: Kudos to all those active Democrats in Texas making sure that Beto O’Rourke has a fighting chance of kicking Ted Cruz out on his but. That would make it one of the best Democratic wins of this election.

Cartoon: But never did a SF series have so many spin-offs and films made after that.

  8. Star Trek had horrible public viewing ratings when it was on. The show had already been saved from cancellation once by Lucile Ball herself. The show only became popular through reruns. When the movie “Star Wars” was released, all things space became popular. The studio approved a Star Trek movie based on the popularity of Star Wars.

  9. Puzzle — 5:32  I just keep rolling along!

YouTube — A blast from the past indeed!  I remember it well . . . once the music started.  I agree with Pat . . . timeless!!!

NY Times — Absolutely pathetic!  Are the Republican white supremacists, uneducated and lacking in creativity, that desperate?  Unfortunately there will be some who believe this is Gillum and paint him as uneducated and not material for the governor’s chair.  I hope that Gillum addresses these calls and assures people that is not him calling.  Go Gillum!!!

Raw Story — Is Cruz over confident about his re-election bid, thinking he does not need signage?  John Houseman did an ad for Smith Barney years ago where he said: “They did it the old fashioned way.  They earned it!”  Well it seems Beto is following that advice . . . calling door to door, using lawn signs, connecting with people etc . . . campaigning the old fashioned way.  Kudos!!!  It is past time that Cruz retire and spend time reading Dr Suess to his kids.  Maybe he’ll learn something!

Cartoon — I was crushed, but my mother sure wasn’t!  Now when I see episodes from that original series, it looks so polyester!

  10.  I think we all hoped the sixties had changed our country, turns out the racism was just kept under wraps for a while.  Gillum’s treatment is ample proof of that.  The orange racist in charge is going to Texas to help Cruz.  Hope that backfires.
Do you suppose that the executive who cancelled Star Trek kept slapping his own face?

  11. So Ted Cruz’s supporters are “agitated” that they’re not seeing enough signs featuring Ted?  And they think that having Twitler come to Texas to campaign is going to help him?

Well, be careful what you wish for because I found a couple of billboards featuring Theodore:

And one being put up by Parkland survivor activist, David Hogg that features a Twitler Tweet from the 2016 GOP campaign:

    • No wonder Ginni Thomas went after David Hogg and other Parkland survivors — they are intelligent, focused, and are putting their money where their mouths are!  Kudos to them all!

I had a look at maddogpac.com which put up that Cruz billboard.  Very interesting and needed.

  12. Thanks, hugs and Amen to all! 17
