I slept pretty well last night, but it left me feeling groggy, because I was overtired.  It’s not overly hot, but the sun hit the wall early.  It  just passed 71° outside, but it was 85° inside when I buttoned up the CatBox and powered up the AC.  WWWendy is on her way to Texas. Crying face  TGIF!!

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:58 (average 4:55).  To do it click here.  How did you do?

  1. 5:29 Canal water doesn’t have the greatest reputation. Heaven knows what you’d fish up.

    My indoor thermometer says 91° and Weather Underground says it’s 93° out about, oh, eight blocks away. It is reasonably dry, though. My ceiling fans are enough – good thing, since that’s all I have.

    Michael – I have a meme about civility. I’ll use it below. BTW, where have Stephen’s studio audience been not to know that toddlers being required to appear in immigration court without representation? That’s been going on for months. In DC today, Senator Mazie Hirono became the first (and as far as I know as I type the only) member of Congress to leave the building to join in support of the women protesting border policies. She was already a superhero to me – she too was recovering from cancer (stage six kidney cancer) when she showed up as did McCain to downvote the repeal of Obamacare. But she got no credit – he got it all.

    NYT – She has a lot of Republicans scared. I pray they have good reason to be scared, and continue to have good reason to be scared. It’s not just a matter of getting reelected. Some of them belong behind bars.

    The View – Whoopie handled that extremely well, IMO. She was completely rational, she laid it down in no uncertain terms, and did not lose civility (!) for an instant.

    Cartoon: Hmmmph. Nero was probably a better musician – though that’s not saying much. He was almost certainly not as good as he thought he was – well, they have that in common.

    RESIST AND PERSIST !!!

  2. LSC: What a great clip of MM, passing on. We must keep up the fight !!!

    NYT: Awesome!! I wish her nothing but the very, very Best !!

    BBA: I’ve always loved Whoopi, she tells it like it is. Good for her !

    Cartoon: Buckle up, ButterCups!

    Hope WWWendy has a safe trip(s), and a great time. We’re at 94 (feels like 104 though), ugh. Hope that you have a relaxing evening, take good care, and Thanks, Tom.

  3. Right now we REALLY need to raise some serious hell – and fight like hellhounds. If we let the Orange Ogre shoehorn another right-wing bugnut on the Supreme Court, this country will be as good as shot to Helium Double Hockey Sticks. Resist like EVERYTHING! The next few months may very well be our last chance to turn this country around via peaceful and legal means – if it isn’t already too late–

    • I have to offer nothing more than moral support to your summons, Freya, but I have loads and loads of that.

  4. Puzzle — 3:50  Don’t worry JD, the Puddy Tat will not even be doing any fishing!

    Late Show — Kudos to Michael Moore!  I’d love to see this picture but I doubt it will be in Canadian theatres, and I am sure as hell not coming to the US.  It is good that he reminds people that the only Republican to win the popular vote in recent was Daddy Bush, Bush 41.  The only way Republicans won the WH was through the EC which is a result of Republican gerrymandering.

    NY Times — Yes, her expression was priceless!  I wonder what lies and tricks Republicans have in store for her?

    AlterNet — Kudos to Whoopi!  I have been a fan for a very long time.  McCain says that abortion is murder.  I wonder what she thinks of capital punishment?  And another member of the panel brought up children that were born but their biological parents were unable or unwilling to look after them.  Where do Republicans stand on that issue as they reduce various social programmes?  As you’ve always said Puddy Tat, Republicans care up to the time of birth.

    Cartoon — Yup, and Drumpf seems to have an endless supply of matches!

    It has been cloudy and cool today — currently 14C (57F).  It has rained but not this minute. Saturday is calling for lots of rain but it should be dry on Sunday, Canada Day.  Not the greatest weather for the start of summer holiday season, but hey, I  prefer this to scorching heat.

    •  “I wonder what lies and tricks Republicans have in store for [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez]?”

      I do too.  But I’m not going to worry too much, and you shouldn’t either.  She is very good at thinking on her feet and deflecting BS.

      • I am not worried as there is nothing I can do.  However, I am curious as to what the low-life Republicans and Drumpf will try to trip her up on.  A woman, a Latina woman threatening their foundation.

        Here is an excellent Morning Joe video of an interview with Ocasio-Cortez.  I hope that Democratic leadership etc are listening to her.

        BTW, has anybody else noticed that Drumpf signs things with a ink crayon, not a pen?  How ridiculous!

    • ON CANADIAN RECIPROCAL TARRIFFS . . .

      Starting 01 July 2018, Canada will impose tariffs on a whole range of products exported by the US, AND Drumpf is not happy about it. HERE is a list of items from the finance ministry.

      And in a phone call to Drumpf today, Trudeau said Canada had no choice but to act. Also, Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has said that Canada will not backdown. She is a real pitbull in the best sense of the name.

      I certainly hope the European Union carries through with their retaliatory tariffs.

      Drumpf needs to understand that he can’t bully other sovereign nations.  I hope he pays dearly for his BS come November and beyond.

      The people I feel sorry for are the “little people” like you and me, wherever they live.  We are the ones who will pay for Drumpf’s madness!

      • Just a pick:

        * Of bovine animals: Prepared meals
        * Of bovine animals: Other
        * Cucumbers and gherkins
        * Orange juice: Not frozen, of a Brix value not exceeding 20
        * Whiskies
        * Insecticides: In packages of a gross weight not exceeding 1.36 kg each
        * Fungicides: In packages of a gross weight not exceeding 1.36 kg each
        * Herbicides, anti-sprouting products and plant-growth regulators: In packages of a gross weight not exceeding 1.36 kg each
        * Toilet paper
        * Printed or illustrated postcards; printed cards bearing personal greetings, messages or announcements, whether or not illustrated, with or without envelopes or trimmings.
        * Other: Sailboats, with or without auxiliary motor
        * Other: Motorboats, other than outboard motorboats
        * Other: Other vessels for pleasure, outboard motorboats

        I think Drumpf can look forward to a lot of complaints from farmers, Monsanto, Hallmark and the boating industry. ? You might have to stock up on toilet paper though, Lynn.?

        • Nah, we make our own right here at Scott paper.

          I try to buy Canadian as much as possible.  I also watch for Koch brothers companies like Georgia Pacific.  I’ll bet the Koch brothers will have Drumpf on their hit list since their products will be subject to tariffs.

  5. Chris Hayes had a great interview with Alexandria Ocasio-Corte last night.
    https://youtu.be/CCQwaweb8kw

  6. LSC: He makes only good points!
    NYT Channel: “Economic, social and racial justice!!!!!!!!!!!!”  Gee, the same thing Moore is after, how about that?  We need Pelosi out of there!
    Alternet:This is why we have such a thing, or are supposed to have such a thing, as the separation of church, state and idiocy!
    ‘Toon: That may just be what the Empty Orange wants, since it was American banks that refused to back his imbecilic lack of “business acumen!”

  7. How can some votes be worth more than others?? What does that mean??Moore is right, get rid of your very undemocratic electoral college!!!
    GO Whoopi!!How about Whoopi in politics?!?!?
    Scary stuff happening in the US!!!

    • When the nation was formed, each state was given representation in the House based on population. It wasn’t perfect, and some imperfections were built in, but it worked well enough most of the time until about 1919 IIRC, when the number of representatives in the House was permanently fixed at 435, based on the space available in the Capitol building. As time went on, the discrepancies between low-population states and high-population states became wider. Today, for instance, California has 53 representatives, and Wyoming has one. But if California were to have one representative for the same number of people that Wyoming’s one represents, California would have to have 70 Representatives. And the gaps continue to get wider. But no one wants to deal with the problems. Would we have to tear down the Capitol building and build a new one? Or is there some other way? Emotions would run very high.

  8. Stephen Colbert: Who am I to say that it’s time Americans put their bodies on the line and protest in peaceful, but disrespectful, masses the US has never seen before. Fortunately Michael Moore is the one saying it and telling Americans it is their last resource. Please take note.

    NYT: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez holds the future. Young progressive Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hold the future. YOUR FUTURE.

    Alternet: Meghan McCain has the right to say that in her personal opinion abortion is murder, but she, as member of the Republican minority, has no right to force that down other people’s throat. Roe v. Wade represents how the majority of Americans think it should be. By abusing democracy, Republicans, who only represent 37% of the American people, have gained the majority in Congress (and many state congresses, I might add) and are now turning the independent, checks-and-balances third branch of government into an extension of their ill-gotten majority in Congress. If this happens before November, America can no longer call itself a democracy. I hope Democrats see the writing on the wall and get organized immediately. Not only to vote in November, but also to take to the streets now before it is too late.

    Cartoon: It was said that Nero set fire to Rome himself, but historians contradicted that now. Not so for Drumpf, who is really putting the US to the torch himself, just to feel himself all-powerful.

  9. Thanks, pooped hugs and Amen to all! 35
