I running late again.  Yesterday my helper friend, Lu, was only fifteen minutes late, setting a new record for punctuality.  I was thrilled.  Before she arrived, I cooked bacon for a week’s breakfasts.  Then I cooked a four day beef, stuffing, veggies and gravy casserole.  I needed that shower!  This morning I got up early to do the dreaded task, and I now have everything folded and stowed.  Now I’m waiting for a grocery delivery.  Needless to say, I need Lona to send a nap.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:54 (average 5:05).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: The Grammy Awards just announced America’s 39th president of the United States Jimmy Carter has won a Grammy for his book Full Life: Reflections at 90 in the Best Spoken Word category. This is the second Grammy for the Noble Peace Prize laureate and former Democratic Commander In Chief.

I’m always happy to share glad tidings for Mr. Peanut.

From NY Times: On the campaign trail, Hillary Clinton has eloquently defined workers’ rights as human rights. She could assert both more forcefully by championing a stronger federal minimum wage of $15 an hour.

So far, Mrs. Clinton has proposed lifting the federal hourly minimum to $12, from its current level of $7.25 an hour. Bernie Sanders is pushing for $15.

She should, and for this and all of Bernie Sanders’ policies that Hillary adopts, Hillary must follow through with that support. Just saying so now would make her a one term President.

From Crooks and Liars: "He’s running for President on the platform of opening his mouth and saying things."

Behold, The Trump Phone.

I agree with the folks that said "Boo!"

  1. 5:25  Got lost in the twists and turns.  So ammonites are extinct.  Too bad Ammon isn't.

I think you getting a catnap from Lona is simply a matter of ask and have.  Sweet dreams.

DKos – I see you quoted the diary including the typo, which I thought very appropriate – Carter was definitely a noble President, maybe the noblest.

NY Times – Nothing to add.

Crooks and Liars – The Trump Phone – what a visual.  Worth the whole video.

Cartoon – Works for me but apparently didn't go far enough.

More on Scalia – Comment on DKos from user "Jim Duty" (and how appropriate is that!): Well I am going to argue that Congress ALREADY shut itself down.  If the Constitution says “Congress SHALL……….” and members publicly announce that they “WILL NOT”,  the appropriate response from the President should be “I reluctantly accept your resignation.  US Marshalls will be available to help move your personal belongs from the building, and business will continue with the remaining members until your replacements have been provided”.

    • WRT your comment on Scalia – I'll help them pack!

Our Constitution, as a living document, works because of the understanding that our public servants not only are sworn to uphold it, but are willing to apply it.

It is clearly stated in the Constitution that the President “shall appoint … judges of the Supreme Court”, with the reasonable constraints “by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate”.

If Republicans no longer are willing to operate in good faith and carry out their duties, then our Constitution will cease to exist.

  2. While there’s no doubt that miscreants like those in the Bundy clan and others like him out West would be happy to add cattle and acreage to the voting rolls, we can thank Chief Justice Earl Warren for declaring, ''People, not land or trees or pastures vote.''

Got to thank those true Constitutional Titans for creating the principle of “One Man, One Vote” that was upheld with Wesberry v Sanders.

[Small nit to pick: It's “Wesberry” – with NO “t” in it]

  3. DK: Kudos to Mr. Carter, he resonates kindness and humility.

NYT: ''Economic obstacles are not standing in the way of a $15-an-hour minimum wage. Misplaced caution and political timidity are. The sooner Mrs. Clinton overcomes those, the stronger her candidacy will be.'' She needs to get on board with this concern for the workers.

    C&L: Great video!!

Joanne, ''More on Scalia'' from Mr. Duty, excellent comment!

Glad that you got your meals all done,  and put up. Hope you have a relaxing evening, take care, and Thanks, Tom.

  4. I note that Texas has a case before SCOTUS to change the population definition that has been used since 1964 to exclude all children and others not eligible to vote (children are more non-white and many will become voters by the time the 10 years is up) so move to more rural and less urban voting districts.

  5. You go, Pres. Jimmie!

Crooks and Liars: Sadly too many people seem to follow the path of following the loudest liar, perceiving his (in this case) words to be gospel simply by dint of volume!

NYT: ''Economic obstacles are not standing in the way of a $15-an-hour minimum wage…."  Studies have long found that increses in the minimum wage do NOT create the problems the 1%ers always claim.

  6. 2:53  Look at it this way Puddy Tat, I saved you from salivating all over your clean fur because of what you could have had were you around millions of years ago!

  7. Puzzle — 2:53  Look at it this way Puddy Tat, I saved you from salivating all over your clean fur because of what you could have had were you around millions of years ago!

Daily Kos — I always liked Jimmy C!  Great that he is getting the recognition he deserves.  He sure didn't as POTUS!  He had to clean up after Nixon/Ford only to be ousted by Rotten Ronnie after 1 term.

NY Times — If Clinton doesn't follow through, just call her a republican.

Crooks and Liars — This was good until Trump's voice came on.  I do not like this hateful man.

Cartoon — From Wikipedia:  (BTW, I think it is Wesberry not Westberry)

"Wesberry v. Sanders, 376 U.S. 1 (1964) was a U.S. Supreme Court case involving U.S. Congressional districts in the state of Georgia. The Court issued its ruling on February 17, 1964. This decision requires each state to draw its U.S. Congressional districts so that they are approximately equal in population."

  8. I hope you got your nap, sounds like you deserved one.

Daily Kos:  Congrats to Mr. Carter.  He has always been an honorable man.

NY Times:  This is an example of why Bernie has a great chance of winning the nomination.  She is too cautious about anything that will offend the one percent.

Cartoon:  Too bad the current SCOTUS ignored this when they created Citizens United.

  9. These actions by Congress is getting RIDICULOUS!!! Pouting and stomping their feet is how I imagine them acting when they got the news that THEY would have to put SCOTUS into a more LEFT leaning court!!! That would be like cutting their OWN throats, if they confirm ANYONE that President Obama nominates!!!

  10. At your service, TomCat, a strong catnap has just arrived. You sure deserve it after all that hard work.

Daily Kos: Congratulations to Jimmy Carter. What a wonderful accomplishment, and twice. He may be ailing, but I think Carter won't have hired a ghost writer like most do.

NY Times: Again the Bernie Effect; Hillary being pushed to the left by Bernie's strong campaign. She better remembers her promises when she gets elected, otherwise she'll have a revolution on her hands as if she were a Republican (uhhh …) and she needs to start another war to keep the people quiet.

Crooks & Liars: Not the best Stephen Colbert has ever done, but then he had to get Donald Trump to call in and in that he succeeded. A nice snarly remark on Trump's 'the next president needs to appointing Scalia's successor' would have been appropriate though, as that answer was in th cards.

Cartoon: You mean there was actually a time when SCOTUS did what it is supposed to do, fairly and independently?????

  11. Thanks all!  Hugs!!
