Almost a decade ago, back in 2007 (know it was because of the pictures' “Created Date”), I came across a site that featured whimsical sculptures made out of Scotch Packaging Tape.  They caught my eye, so I saved a bunch of them that I’ll share with you today.

I can’t find that site from 2007, but it looks like it got some coverage and probably led to Scotch Tape by 3M developing a contest “Off the Roll” – at least from 2010 to 2012.  (Can’t find anything before or after – and more on that at the end.)

We’ll start with the originals that I came across back in 2007

From that site, here is the 2012 Grand Prize Winner

And here's what I think may be the cutest one I came across – the 2010 Grand Prize Winner

Here's a YouTube of how an artist goes about making a human cast, along with its installation and some pedestrians’ reactions.

Now aren't you glad you stuck around for a bit?

  1. Clever and creative ways to make eye-catching sculpture using "Scotch Packaging Tape" than what it was intended for in the first place, holding and sticking things together. Thanks for the "sticking aound" pics. lol.

  2. This reminds me somewhat of all those duct tape prom outfita and wedding outfits – I say "outfits" rather than "dresses because the best ones included tuxedos for the males.  It is a wonderful thing that people can be creative with almost anything – and a very sad thing indeed that so many people do not have the luxury of ever finding that out.  I think my favorite is the lollipops.  How'd you like to be a meter maid (or man) with those things up?

  3. Amazing photos, wish I could do that!

Thank you, Joanne for this great post!

  4. Marvelous creativity…ideal would be if 100% had previously been used so it was all recycled…thanks Nameless

  5. Way cool, Nameless!  It looks like a sticky passtime!

  6. Loved this.  I do admire creative people.

  7. Thanks for collecting these images and posting them now, Nameless. I think this is more than creativity, the out of the box thinking and rendering makes these sculptures art, and it is art just the way I like it best, a bit tongue-in- cheek, a bit of humor and a bit out of the ordinary. That is why I like the statue creating itself, the baby pulling the sign over and the goldfish in the bag the best, but like all the others too. If the winning sculpture floats in the air like the photographs suggests, then the artist has taken it to a whole new level and deserves his price.

  8. Wow, the amount of real creativity in this world never stops astounding me.  I would never even think of doing such a thing.  Probably my penurious nature, a roll of scotch tape lasts me until it dries out completely and cracks off in stead of pulling off the spool.  Such waste, and such beauty.  I guess artists don't care about money.  I don't either actually, I'm just not creative in that way at all.  But admire those who are.  :^)
