Bernie for President!

I said long ago that, if either Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders runs for President, as a Democrat, I will support them.  I therefore endorse Bernie Sanders for the office of President of the United States.  I will be sending him money.  Sadly, it will be a very small donation, because that’s all there is to give.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, announced Thursday that he was running for president as a Democrat, injecting a progressive voice into the contest and providing Hillary Rodham Clinton with her first official rival for the party’s nomination.

Avoiding the fanfare that several Republicans have chosen so far when announcing their candidacies, Mr. Sanders issued a statement to supporters that laid out his goals for reducing income inequality, addressing climate change and scaling back the influence of money in politics.

“After a year of travel, discussion and dialogue, I have decided to be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president,” Mr. Sanders told his supporters.

Mr. Sanders’s bid is considered a longshot, but his unflinching commitment to stances popular with the left — such as opposing foreign military interventions and reining in big banks — could force Mrs. Clinton to address these issues more deeply.

“I think it is time for the American people to say enough is enough,” he said in an interview. “We need an economy that works for all of us and not just for a handful of billionaires.”… [emphasis added]

My reason for choosing Bernie is clear.  His positions reflect my own views far more closely that Hillary’s do.

However, I’m not so naive as to think that Bernie has a strong chance to get the nomination.  The last thing I want is to see the Democratic nominee, whoever it is, bloodied from intra-party attacks.  So I’ll base my support of Bernie on how Bernie stands on issues.  I will not try to soothe Bernie’s butt with Benghazi Balm, a Republican product.  I will not be attacking Hillary.

No matter which Democrat you support, I urge you to respect their Democratic opponent(s) and save your attacks for the politicians who deserve them.

  1. Seems like it was a "Bernie Sanders Day" over at Daily Kos.  Ad here's a handy-dandy post that has links to Bernie's Homepage, Update, Donate, a good summary of Bernie on the Issues and a Petition to undo "Citizens United" – all at one bookmark:

    • Thanks so much for that link, Nameless.  I almost gave off the email, but when I looked, I saw that ActBlue has a credit card number which has been compromised so I figured I'd google him, and you have just saved me the effort  Bless you.

    • Thanks for the link, I shared it on Facebook, hoping that some of my red friends would read it.

  2. one for the everyman and everywoman!

  3. Yup–did my teeny donate to send the support message and had been responding to the Party efforts to not expect any until they stopped focusing on Hilary and I saw them give Bernie equal support

  4. He looks a bit frail. I want Bernie too. He will scare many and when he becomes a threat they will get rid of him.

  5. I tip my hat off to Bernie Sanders.  I will probably vote for Clinton.  I guess I will see who eles will be running

  6. I hope you get some relief from pain, soon.

I am so happy that Bernie decided to run.  I really wish he had a snowball's chance to win. He truly represents us, not the corporations.  That said, Hillary will probably get the nomination because she has mega bucks and support.

  7. From Wikipedia:

"Sanders spent a year studying psychology at Brooklyn College before transferring to the University of Chicago. While a student in 1963, Sanders was active in the Civil Rights Movement, becoming a student organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He was one of several thousand students who traveled on buses to Washington, D.C., for the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Sanders graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science.

After graduating, Sanders spent time on an Israeli kibbutz. In 1964, he moved to Vermont, where he worked as a carpenter, filmmaker, writer, and researcher, among other jobs."

Bernie is a social democrat, a believer in democracy and in the welfare of the people.  I suspect that we will hear over and over from the right wing nut jobs that he is a socialist and a communist, which is interesting because being a socialist or social democrat is inconsistent at a very basic level with communism which is a dictatorship.

I would vote for Bernie all the way, but I don`t think he has a snowball`s chance in hell of winning.  But I do think he could influence other progressives and bring the Democrats further left, if only a mite.

I wonder, could he be Hillary`s running mate?

  8. Like everyone else I don't think that the inestimable Bernie Sanders will win the Democratic nomination – but he should!  I hope that he will win enough votes to give Hillary pause for thought at how far right her politics have swung over the years and to rein them back – especially on fracking and GMOs – neither one of which could be supported by a person with all of the following qualities a) intelligence and the ability to read the huge volumes of weighty scientific criticism against both GMOs and fracking b) an active conscience c) lack of hypocrisy.   So sad.

  9. I am ecstatic that he is running as a  Democrat. He will be getting a donation from me too, albeit a small one. I am seeing a surprising number of people supporting him on FB. That is very good news. Now we just have to educate people on exactly what it means to be a Socialist Democrat because the term Socialist scares them.

  10. Andy Borowitz | Hillary Expected to Adopt All of Sanders's Positions by Noon

    Andy Borowitz, The New Yorker
Borowitz writes: "Within minutes of Sanders's entry into the Democratic race, Clinton released position papers on trade, income inequality, national defense, and the environment that meticulously aped the Vermont senator's views on those matters."

  11. Thanks all!  Go! Bernie!! Go!!!

  12. Glad to see he finally threw his hat in the ring! Even if he doesn’t win the nomination, he would be an excellent running mate for Hillary. That said, Hillary better mind her P’s and Q’s with Bernie! He might open her up to some critisizm from the far left! And we’ll deserved!
