Now that the American people have at long last been shocked into demanding reasonable firearms reform, Republicans have been twisting in the wind, with scheme after scheme to prevent it, each one more absurd than the last.  I thought it could not get any worse, but I was wrong.

Last night, David Barton appeared on Glenn Beck’s television program to discuss the "real issues" regarding gun control and the Second Amendment.  After an opening segment in which Beck claimed that Obamacare will force people to give up their guns and lead to Nazi-like euthanasia programs, the two got down to business with Barton explaining that the NRA was founded in order to protect freed slaves from lynchings and that there never used to be school shootings in the 1800s because all of the kids carried guns to school…

Here’s the video.

Now I have no doubt that someone will want to accuse me of taking an absurd wing-nut and calling him a Republican.  Not so fast.  David Barton is the former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.

  1. It is very easy for me to just dismiss this as more craziness ; What stops me is that foolish people believe the insanity preached by these evil men , who are being paid many millions of $ for these performances- -There is nothing, no lies, Nothing ! that is beneath them– These are men filled with Hate and Greed–

What in the name of the Good God gives this credence in the eyes of their audience ?-What hinders people from seeing this for what it really is–Lies designed to spread Hate–

    They are Evil personified :

  2. David Barton obviously lives in his own little fantasy land of guns. Not all children had guns that they could tote to school. Some failies only had their varmint gun in the house.

  3. Our Second Amendment never was intended to grant anyone the right to carry a large piece of metal that is capable to launch smaller metal projectiles over extremely great distances and at extremely high velocities in extremely rapid succession that will kill citizens.

Treat guns just like we treat cars:

Require Licenses, Insurance, Registration, Age Limits, Learners Permits, Inspections … and even seatbelts for safety

    • I agree with you, but a seatbelt?  What is that Nameless?  A zip strip through the firing mechanism so that the gun can't fire without first cutting the zip strip?

  4. As a former Marine Law Enforcement Officer in the USCG and expert marksman, I sold all my weapons before my first child was born and haven't owned another since…

    • It may not mean much coming from a pacifist and anti gun Canuck, Richard, but thank you.  And if I may speak on behalf of all your children and other children as well,  thanks for your decision, your common sense, and your commitment!  Namasté Richard

    • When I stopped hunting, I gave mine away to my ex brother-in-law.  I had eight.

  5. This is so much malarchy that it is very difficult to take seriously! My "solutions would be three-fold 1. appropriate criminal checks and registration. 2. Ban assault weapons and high capacity clips 3. Make gun trafficking a federal offense.  Seems relatively reasonble and rather simple — I also like a comedian's take: make each bullet cost $5000 – I forget who said it – but he has a point – if the ammo were made extremely expensive then you would have to be very rich to carry out the ridiculous scenarios we've recently experienced. If they want to play with assault weapons then they can go to a shooting range to rent the weapon. –but I too am a limp-wristed pascifist who's never held a gun!

  6. I don't need an assault weapon but I like guns and I need guns.  I used to travel cross country by myself a lot, now it is less, but I would have been terrified without a gun under the seat.  I have had several problems but for one instance, a trucker followed me from MO to Tulsa, OK—if I would pull in to take an aspirin——he would follow me in—–I was cautious–kept the engine going and the doors locked and I quickly took the aspirin and moved out——-he followed me out on the highway again. I lost him at Tulsa. Also, I like to go to target practice and once in awhile shoot skeet.  I need my guns.

  7. The only people who listen to the Vick’s snorting, fake – sobbing – into – a – lace – hankie Glenn Beck are diehard birthers and people who believe that Obama is an alien from another planet. Glenn Beck is crazy. He was too crazy for Fox – what does that say? But, if we are talking about his standing among republicans, then he’s an icon of the whole movement, which is pretty funny indeed.

  8. In the Open Thread, I mentioned seeing in the Reuters photo journalism section a picture of a Seattle Police Officer seizing a rocket launcher from a man, an average looking 40 year old man, who had just purchased it. Further along was a picture of an 11 year old at the LA shooting range, gun (pistol) in hand, preparing for some target practice.  Can someone please tell me why a citizen needs a rocket launcher! Protection from space aliens, and why an 11 year old should be learning to shoot? This is just the height of stupidity!

I have certainly heard Glenn Beck many times try to hype everybody up with the old Republican/Teabagger chestnut "Obama is coming to take your guns away".  This is a withered chestnut but it is still being used by the right wingnuts.

I still think that, if there are going to be guns, your article on 21/12/13 has the right controls — Comprehensive background check and registration at point of sale, training, written test, practical use and maintenance test, health requirments, liability insurance, renewal of licenses and competence at regular intervals.  Over the past weeks, I have also been wondering about different licenses for different kinds of guns, or a graduated licensing system so that if you hold, for example, the highest level license, you could operate, shotguns, rifles, handguns etc.

Further there is no need for the average citizen to have an assault weapon, nor high capacity magazines.  Ban them.

Living in a country with gun regulations, I am tired of hearing about the guns that are smuggled across the border into Canada.  Approximately 90% of the guns used in violent crime come in from the US.  Lax US laws perpetuate this.

Oh, if you are coming to Canada on vacation, or planning on driving to Alaska, leave your guns at home.  They are not allowed.  Every year people are caught at the border, their guns confiscated, and they sent home thoroughly ticked off.

    • Lynn, I startede learning to shoot when I was eight.  By the time I was old enough to hunt, I was well trained in the safe and responsible use of firearms.  Otherwise I agree, except that if you want to take my howitzer, you'll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers. πŸ˜‰
