The best description I van find for Mitt Romney’s victory is that he bought it by outspending Rick Santorum 7 to 1.  The big surprise is that perennial loser, Ron Paul, actually eked out a very distant third place over straw candidate Newt Gingrich, who did not even bother to campaign.  As with other Republican contests, this one was also an insanely managed zoo.

21rmoneyMitt Romney took a major stride toward the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday night, routing Rick Santorum in the Illinois primary for his third big-state win in a row and padding his already-formidable lead in the race for convention delegates.

“What a night,” Romney exulted to cheering supporters in suburban Chicago. Looking beyond his GOP rivals, he said he had a simple message for President Barack Obama, the man Republicans hope to defeat next fall: “Enough. We’ve had enough.”

Returns from 75 percent of Illinois’ precincts showed Romney gaining 47 percent of the vote compared to 35 percent for Santorum, 9 percent for Ron Paul and 8 percent for a fading Newt Gingrich….

Romney triumphed in Illinois after benefitting from a crushing, 7-1 advantage in the television advertising wars, and as his chief rival struggled to overcome self-imposed political wounds in the marathon race to pick an opponent to Obama… [emphasis added]

Once again, the Republican Party has demonstrated that, while they are certainly able to buy elections, they are not fit to run a primary, let alone govern.

  1. I’m pretty sure the powers that be (the powers behind the candidates) want a brokered convention. They want the opportunity to pick the stupidest, most hard core one to run against Obama. All I can say is “Go for it!”

  2. “Once again, the Republican Party has demonstrated that, while they are certainly able to buy elections, they are not fit to run a primary, let alone govern.”

Four more years for President Obama to finish the clean-up… Don’t vote for Gop Greed .

  3. In all the analysis– there seems to be little mention of how low the turnout of registered voters really was , 900,000 out a pool of almost 9 mil ?  not so overwhelming is it ?

    • Well, in fairness Illinois’ 2012 repubican Primary turnout was up some 3% from the 2008 Primary.

BUT overall, matching state to state, this year’s repubican Primary & Caucus turnout is DOWN over 5%  from 2008 – and that’s not factoring in population growth!

However, I should note that I didn’t include either Washington state (because in 2008 they held both a Primary and a Caucus, but this year only a Caucus), or Hawaii (because in 2008 they held a Caucus Convention in late May and didn’t take a vote, probably because it was already decided for McCain).

  4. The GOP primaries/caucuses have been handled so ineptly, starting way back in Iowa, that it is hard to believe that they could be that moronic.  Is it possible that the Greedy old Pharts (GOP) are trying to lull the Democrats into complacency so that they knock them out with a one-two punch in November?  Or is it that the supposed power is going to their heads and they are tripping over their own egos and sense of importance?

Whichever, the Greedy old Pharts are not doing anything well and aren’t fit to govern.

  5. Let’s alll hope that the RepublicanTs have as poor a turnout in the November election that they have had in all their primaries and caucuses to date. Less than 25% of elegible voters!

  6. Romney is a vapid mess of a candidate. He stands for nothing beyond his own personal advancement; has no realistic or useful agenda to offer the country; is a pathological liar; and is a wek-kneed troublemaker. He is the least-deserving of all candidates to be put on the public payroll.

  7. I take nothing for granted– its not over til its over and we have almost 8 months to go—I don’t forget there are an awful lot out there , voting , who dont know how to think– I also dont underestimate the power of racism–
