Yesterday the heat was oppressive. A new fire inspector has ordered that all the doors between hallways be kept closed. That leaves nowhere to get cool air or for the heat to escape at night. Even with my little AC going constantly, it only cooled to 91° Sunday night and is now 97°. This heat wave is forecast to continue until Wednesday, so my contributions will be limited. I have not answered replies, and am mot up to doing so. There is only one short take. Today, I expect more of the same.
Jig Zone Puzzles:
Yesterday it took me 4:14 (average 4:55). To do it, click here, and today it took me 4:01 (average 4:32). To do it, click here. How did you do?
Short Take:
From The Cap Times: An internal memo from a top [Wisconsin] Department of Transportation official instructs workers at Division of Motor Vehicles service centers not to tell members of the public that they can obtain voter identification cards free of charge — unless they know to ask for it.
The memo, recently obtained by The Capital Times, was written by Steve Krieser and sent to all state Department of Transportation and Department of Motor Vehicles employees on July 1, the same day employees were to begin issuing photo IDs in accordance with a controversial new Voter Photo ID law adopted earlier in the year.
As laid out in the memo, failure to check a box when applying for photo ID with the Division of Motor Vehicles will result in the payment of $28.
Fitzwalkerstan Koch suckers, rich enough to be well informed, get a free voter ID. The rest pay. I understand that Walker had the employee that leaked the memo fired.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Can you say “screwed, glued and tatooed!”? Was it not Wisconsin who closed a number of DMV offices, primarily in Democrat areas thereby reducing ready access to ID cards? It’s definitely Wisconsin DOT that has issued a memo about not giving out the free ID unless specifically requested. Is it not the DMV/DOT that perportedly fired the employee for leaking the memo? These sounds like the actions of a Republican campaign to reduce voter turnout. Yes, I might have seen it otherwise had the DMV offices not been closed and the employee not fired. The leaking of this memo is a matter for reprimand, not firing. The cartoon should read “Wisconsin Republicans”.
Love the cartoon. Puzzle times still suck but I like doing them.
Amen to all, Lynn.
Are you keeping yourself well hydrated? Tom even if yoou hate the stuff drink more water. or get in your bathtub and spend the day there as much as you can. You have to get yourself cooled down.
Thanks Mark. I’m guzzling almost a gallon a day.
I thought the heat was supposed to be mild in Portland?
That’s outrageous!
That’s about it!
Lisa, it’s been a pretty mild summer, overall. It’s 73 outside, but 92 in the breezeway and at my desk. There’s no way for the cool air to get to where I am.
Definitely recommend TWM’s advice to STAY HYDRATED! Do you have a laptop you could take to a library or Starbucks to take advantage of their AC and WiFi?
The good news is that the League of Women Voters is preparing a lawsuit in Wisconsin against this illegal Poll Tax.
You read my mind . . . where the hell is the DOJ? In MS, AR, LA, and throughout the South they at least called it by it’s true name — a POLL TAX. My grandmother lived her entire life in ARK. (poor lady) and never did vote until the ’70’s because she was poor and never had the money for the poll tax. Are we going to have segregated schools and white sheets next?
Ann, DOJ is investigating several states. In Wisconsin it is not a poll tax, because people can get one for free. They just don’t want anyone to know.
Thanks Nameless. If I go out, I have to shut my place up and the temp inside will skyrocket.
That is great news.
Today (the butterfly) I did in 3:20. Yesterday I got 4:10. Looks like I got lucky. I am 78 out of 252 (310).
Harder times on the way.
