GOP: The Party of Glock

Who can forget how Sarah Palin placed bullseyes on Democratic congressional districts, possibly inspiring a madman in one of those districts, Pima County Arizona, to kill six people and wound thirteen more, including the woman Palin targeted, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.  To raise money in Pima county, the Republican party is raffling a Glock pistol, identical to the one Jared Lee Loughner used.

We could fill this space with adjectives that describe what we think of the Pima County Republican Party’s decision to raffle of [sic] a Glock gun, three 12-round magazines and a case.

4PalinsBullseyesJared Lee Loughner used a Glock to gun down six people and injure 13 others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who he shot point-blank through the head while she was meeting with constituents on Jan. 8.

Yet, it comes as a complete surprise to the Pima County Republicans’ interim leader, Mike Shaw, that anyone might object to raffling off a gun to raise money to defeat Democrats in the next election.

But it shouldn’t be a shock – and given the publicity the Pima County GOP has received from its galling decision, it’s perhaps not an unwelcome surprise.

So about that list of adjectives:

Crass, insensitive, vulgar, displaying a lack of empathy or compassion, dumbfounding, offensive, callous, boorish, thoughtless – all words that would fit.

But, that’s its right.

If the Pima County Republican Party thinks the best way to sell its message to voters is to raffle off a Glock and feign surprise that others think it is, at the very least, in bad taste then that’s their prerogative.

The Pima County party is doing voters a service by showing that it won’t reconsider whether this is the wrong time and place for a political fundraiser featuring a gun. It won’t back off and acknowledge that its actions may have been hurtful. No, it’s sticking by its guns, so to speak, even expanding the auction to include a deer rifle… [emphasis added]

This is so symptomatic of the Republican love affair with guns and political violence.  I agree it’s their right to do it, but it’s mine to call it the hateful tactic it is.

Hey boys, maybe you can raise more hate money if you bring in Bullseye Barbie to pick the winning ticket!

  1. You’re posting early.  This gun raffle would be ALMOST be comical in it’s ineptitude if it were not so vile.  Do the Rep’s REALLY think they win votes like this?  Maybe in AZ and MS, but the rest of the country is not so hate-filled.

    • When I can’t sleep, because of the heat, I write earlier and sleep later.  Republicans have gun raffles all over the country.  It demonstrates their love of violence.  There, it was particularly vile.

  2. What the Glock?!?  Putting all pretense aside, next year’s raffle will simply be Brownshirts and Jackboots.

(Small note: The Glock 23.40 being raffled is acutally an updated version of the Glock 19 used by Jared Loughner.)

  3. I think they can’t top themselves in ugly , and then sonofagun   They turn around and come up with something even uglier !!

  4. What, no “Open Season On Liberals” poster to go with that?

  5. Do we really need to hype how insensitive this group of Rs is, Tom?  It saddens me greatly that such a tactic was taken; but it also saddens me that we get caught up in similar hate speech in response.  Either we take the high road or we dishonor ourselves by name calling and talk of violence in return.  All of this makes me sick to my stomach.  Down with hate on both sides of the isle!

The comments here have been quite remarkable compared to those on another site where I tried to post my comment but couldn’t, for some unknown reason.  In one sense I’m glad to have this information just to be aware of it the reality of the Tea’s desperation, but such hate I’m not interested in promulgating.

    • Caitlin, there’s no hate on my part.  I think it’s important for people to understand where Republicans stand, and the main stream broadcast media isn’t covering it.  Now when I use a name for a Republican, it’s not hate.  It is satirical humor for a specific purpose.  It sticks in people’s minds.  Bullseye Barbie will keep making the point.

  6. Talk about tone deaf!

  7. ……..still stocking up on guns, are they?   I guess the neo-cons are  getting ready for their version of “end times”.

  8. I was stunned when I heard this on the news earlier this week.

How low can you go? And I’m not talking about doing the limbo here.

  9. Loughner was a leftist wasn’t he? And as I undestand, Giffords voting record was very pro 2nd Amendment. We better not let the right-wingers see this…  because then they’ll know how stupid we are.

    • Welcome FC. 🙂

No, that’s something Republicans spread around to muddy the water, but his Facebook profile and his manifesto were clearly right-wing.  You’re right about Giffords.  Gabby’s voting record is extreme blue dog, and were it not for personal tragedy transcending politics, I would have been calling for her to be challenged in the primary.  It will be interesting to see if being the victim of a Second Amendment solution will change her views.

  10. Look on the bright side.  Maybe someone will give Mike Shaw a Gabrielle Gifford.

  11. Disgusting.

  12. Maybe people should be thankful that the Pima County GOP pulled this tasteless act — it shows their true colours!  Given their insensitivity to recent violent acts, this should guarantee that they don’t get elected.
