Yesterday I was gone most of the day for my wellness exam.  I am pleased to announce that I am still alive, but I missed sleep to go.  I also ran into a former prisoner who I helped several years ago.  It was great to see that he is still free and doing well.  I’m current on replies.  Today, I have an early appointment with my denturist to fix my lowers.  Then I need to go to the store, so I’ll be busy.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

It’s ironic that humor can be found in the worst of situations.

From NY Times: MSNBC said Tuesday that it had signed its top star, Rachel Maddow, to a new multi-year contract, cementing her position at the cable news channel for several years.

Finally some good news!

Monthly Report for July 2011

In July, Politics Plus performed poorly in every category.  Uniques, visits, page views, hits and bandwidth are all down from June’s record.  I consider page views most important, because to generate more than one page view on a visit, someone has to open other pages to actually read them.  There are several reasons for the decrease.  One of our biggest non-blog referrers received complaints from people who do not want this message heard.  We I was banned from posting our links.  When I finally learned what happened, I contacted their management, and we worked it out, but most of the month was gone. The other reason is the time I missed with health problems.

Here are our basic stats:

Here is our most recent Clustrmap, last updated on August 1.

Our Clustrmap reset the morning of 2/28, starting over from scratch. The largest circles represent over 1,000 visits.  The tiniest represent one to ten.

Deal: An Exercise in Evil

Posted by at 1:30 am  Politics
Aug 022011

Yesterday I said I needed time to study and see the CPC analysis of the deal that will pass the Senate today.  Subsequently I called my Representative and Senators requesting that they should vote no.  There is no chance that the Senate will say no, because the House Republicans have adjourned, and the Representatives have gone home until September, abandoning America in a time of need.  There is only one good thing about the deal.  It was a defeat for the Teabaggers, because their plan to destroy the government through default was derailed.  Otherwise it was a complete cave-in.

bipartisan_b2284The House of Representatives on Monday approved a last-gasp deal to raise the U.S. borrowing limit in a daecisive step toward averting a catastrophic debt default by the world’s largest economy.

A day before the deadline to lift the debt ceiling, the passage by the Republican-controlled House of the $2.1 trillion deficit-cutting plan hammered out over the weekend cleared the way for the Senate to approve it.

The Democratic-controlled Senate was due to vote on the bill at noon (1600 GMT) on Tuesday and was widely expected to pass it. This would send it to the desk of President Barack Obama, who has said he is anxious to sign the bill.

The House vote of approval had been considered the biggest obstacle to a solution of the crisis…

Inserted from <Reuters>

In October, 2010, I sat in the audience and cheered Obama, as he promised not to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich.  In January, Republicans held America’s suffering unemployed hostage.  I called it terrorism then, and said that, if Obama gave into terrorist demands, it would only inspire more Republican terrorism.  Every time Obama caves-in, it makes Republicans more intransigent, because they are more confident that their criminal schemes will work.

Lawrence O’Donnell railed against the deal.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Chris Hayes interviewed Eugene Robinson and described the Republican strategy.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Keith Olbermann properly expresses the outrage we should all be feeling on Countdown.

I lack the physical ability to demonstrate, as I once did, but I would fully support a general strike.

What happens from here depends on who the Democratic leadership appoints to the special committee.  If we get people like Raul Grijalva, Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kucinich, and Jeff Merkley, we may survive this.  If we get people like Ben Nelson [DINO-NE], we’re screwed.

This convinces me that the Obama administration is something to be survived, not celebrated.  However, before we fly off the handle remember the five fascists of SCROTUS: Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Kennedy.  I would certainly rather survive a second term of Obama than a Republican, who will increase the domination of SCROTUS.  Those are the only realistic choices we’re going to get.

Each time I think I have seen the sleaziest extent to which Republicans will stoop to steal the upcoming recall elections in the Fascist Corporate Dictatorship of Fitzwalkerstan, formerly Wisconsin, they surprise me by finding something even sleazier.

2recallIs the Koch-backed conservative group Americans For Prosperity up to no good in the Wisconsin state Senate recalls?

As Politico reports, mailers have now turned up from Americans For Prosperity Wisconsin, addressed to voters in two of the Republican-held recall districts, where the elections will be held on August 9. The mailers ask recipients to fill out an absentee ballot application, and send it in — by August 11, after Election Day for the majority of these races.

"These are people who are our 1’s [solid Democrats] in the voterfile who we already knew," a Democratic source told Politico. "They ain’t AFP members, that’s for damn sure."

There are two other recall elections being held on August 16, targeting two Democratic incumbents, but they are both a distance away from the recipients of these particular mailers.

Furthermore, a close look at the mailer shows a continuation of irregularities that have already involved conservative groups and absentee ballots in the state.

The mailing address for the applications is listed as "Absentee Ballot Application Processing Center, P.O. Box 1327, Madison WI 53701-1327." A Google search shows that this address is not any sort of government office, but has been used by the conservative group Wisconsin Family Action [Wing-nuts delinked]… [emphasis added]

There is nothing Republicans will not to transform America into a permanent one-party corporate plutocracy.  I stand with the Democrats of Wisconsin!

Many on the right are claiming that Breivik could not be a Christian terrorist, because what he did was not a Christian act.  In a way I agree with them, in spite of their complete hypocrisy, but it’s not that simple.

2BreivikIn the wake of mass murder in Norway by a young man who hearkened to the Christian crusades and calls himself a cultural Christian – many ordinary people of faith were horrified to find Anders Behring Breivik described as a “Christian terrorist.”

Whether that title applies to Mr. Breivik is a suddenly awkward issue – partly lembecause it raises the question about a fast and loose use of “Muslim” or “Islamic” to name those who commit violence in the name of their faith.

While European media seem disinterested in Breivik’s Christian self-definition or the terminology used to describe him, in the US and Muslim media worlds it is a sprawling debate. It was hyped by Bill O’Reilly on Fox News who found it an “outrage” to call Breivik a Christian terrorist; Mr. O’Reilly responded to some reports that early on took Breivik’s statements about his Christianity at face value.

But the Fox talk show host and some others have denied that Muslims who commit violence should be treated by the same rules… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Christian Science Monitor>

The problem here is not Christianity or Islam, as both religions condemn killing the innocent.  The problem is that right-wing extremists have abused both religions to further their political agendas.  Breivik is no more Christian than the Republican Supply-side pseudo Christians here.

Because of his racist beliefs, and his group’s connections to the Koch-funded AFP, perhaps he should be called the Teabagger Terrorist.

Yesterday I spent most of the morning collecting and organizing the data for today’s monthly report, and analysis of the Satan sandwich continued into the afternoon.  I’m current with replies.  Today I have my annual “Wellness Exam”.  I know it’s necessary, but I’ll be spending four hours traveling for a half hour doctor’s appointment.  It cuts into my morning sleep time.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today it took me 4:00 (average 4:47).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Salon: Health insurance plans must cover birth control as preventive care for women, with no copays, the Obama administration said Monday in a decision with far-reaching implications for health care as well as social mores.

The requirement is part of a broad expansion of coverage for women’s preventive care under President Barack Obama’s health care law. Also to be covered without copays are breast pumps for nursing mothers, an annual "well-woman" physical, screening for the virus that causes cervical cancer and for diabetes during pregnancy, counseling on domestic violence, and other services.

Benefits like these are the reason this plan is an improvement over what was, and why Republicans hate it so much.

From Huffington Post: The Obama administration Monday sued to block enforcement of Alabama’s new immigration law, widely considered to be the toughest measure in the United States to try to crack down on illegal immigrants.

On immigration, this administration has a terrible track record.  We still need reform that includes a path to citizenship for the undocumented people here now.

From SPLC: The discovery of a six-page essay written by civil rights icon Rosa Parks, in which she recounts the attempted rape of a black housekeeper by a white neighbor, has ignited an impassioned response from the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC). Not only has the CCC attacked the Associated Press for being “anti-white,” it has taken the opportunity to malign black men as serial rapists.

The CCC is a modern Republican replacement for the KKK.

This is not a good deal.  It looks like, walks like, talks like, and smells like a cave-in.  The only question is whether the consequences of refusing it would be worse than the deal itself.  I’m reserving judgment for now.  I want to better understand the details, not just the overview.  I want to know how the ‘super committee’ will be selected.  I want to see the analysis of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.  Then I’ll decide.  In the meantime, here’s an overview.

First, here is the complete description from the White House.

WhiteHouseBipartisan Debt Deal: A Win for the Economy and Budget Discipline

  • Removes the cloud of uncertainty over our economy at this critical time, by ensuring that no one will be able to use the threat of the nation’s first default now, or in only a few months, for political gain;
  • Locks in a down payment on significant deficit reduction, with savings from both domestic and Pentagon spending, and is designed to protect crucial investments like aid for college students;
  • Establishes a bipartisan process to seek a balanced approach to larger deficit reduction through entitlement and tax reform;
  • Deploys an enforcement mechanism that gives all sides an incentive to reach bipartisan compromise on historic deficit reduction, while protecting Social Security, Medicare beneficiaries and low-income programs;
  • Stays true to the President’s commitment to shared sacrifice by preventing the middle class, seniors and those who are most vulnerable from shouldering the burden of deficit reduction. The President did not agree to any entitlement reforms outside of the context of a bipartisan committee process where tax reform will be on the table and the President will insist on shared sacrifice from the most well-off and those with the most indefensible tax breaks.

Mechanics of the Debt Deal

  • Immediately enacted 10-year discretionary spending caps generating nearly $1 trillion in deficit reduction; balanced between defense and non-defense spending.
  • President authorized to increase the debt limit by at least $2.1 trillion, eliminating the need for further increases until 2013.
  • Bipartisan committee process tasked with identifying an additional $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction, including from entitlement and tax reform. Committee is required to report legislation by November 23, 2011, which receives fast-track protections. Congress is required to vote on Committee recommendations by December 23, 2011.
  • Enforcement mechanism established to force all parties – Republican and Democrat – to agree to balanced deficit reduction. If Committee fails, enforcement mechanism will trigger spending reductions beginning in 2013 – split 50/50 between domestic and defense spending. Enforcement protects Social Security, Medicare beneficiaries, and low-income programs from any cuts.

1. REMOVING UNCERTAINTY TO SUPPORT THE AMERICAN ECONOMY

  • Deal Removes Cloud of Uncertainty Until 2013, Eliminating Key Headwind on the Economy: Independent analysts, economists, and ratings agencies have all made clear that a short-term debt limit increase would create unacceptable economic uncertainty by risking default again within only a matter of months and as S&P stated, increase the chance of a downgrade. By ensuring a debt limit increase of at least $2.1 trillion, this deal removes the specter of default, providing important certainty to our economy at a fragile moment.
  • Mechanism to Ensure Further Deficit Reduction is Designed to Phase-In Beginning in 2013 to Avoid Harming the Recovery: The deal includes a mechanism to ensure additional deficit reduction, consistent with the economic recovery. The enforcement mechanism would not be made effective until 2013, avoiding any immediate contraction that could harm the recovery. And savings from the down payment will be enacted over 10 years, consistent with supporting the economic recovery.

2. A DOWNPAYMENT ON DEFICIT REDUCTION BY LOCKING IN HISTORIC SPENDING DISCIPLINE – BALANCED BETWEEN DOMESTIC AND PENTAGON SPENDING

  • More than $900 Billion in Savings over 10 Years By Capping Discretionary Spending: The deal includes caps on discretionary spending that will produce more than $900 billion in savings over the next 10 years compared to the CBO March baseline, even as it protects core investments from deep and economically damaging cuts.
  • Includes Savings of $350 Billion from the Base Defense Budget – the First Defense Cut Since the 1990s: The deal puts us on track to cut $350 billion from the defense budget over 10 years. These reductions will be implemented based on the outcome of a review of our missions, roles, and capabilities that will reflect the President’s commitment to protecting our national security.
  • Reduces Domestic Discretionary Spending to the Lowest Level Since Eisenhower: These discretionary caps will put us on track to reduce non-defense discretionary spending to its lowest level since Dwight Eisenhower was President.
  • Includes Funding to Protect the President’s Historic Investment in Pell Grants: Since taking office, the President has increased the maximum Pell award by $819 to a maximum award $5,550, helping over 9 million students pay for college tuition bills. The deal provides specific protection in the discretionary budget to ensure that the there will be sufficient funding for the President’s historic investment in Pell Grants without undermining other critical investments.

3. ESTABLISHING A BIPARTISAN PROCESS TO ACHIEVE $1.5 TRILLION IN ADDITIONAL BALANCED DEFICIT REDUCTION BY THE END OF 2011

  • The Deal Locks in a Process to Enact $1.5 Trillion in Additional Deficit Reduction Through a Bipartisan, Bicameral Congressional Committee: The deal creates a bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Committee that is charged with enacting $1.5 trillion in additional deficit reduction by the end of the year. This Committee will work without the looming specter of default, ensuring time to carefully consider essential reforms without the disruption and brinksmanship of the past few months.
  • This Committee is Empowered Beyond Previous Bipartisan Attempts at Deficit Reduction: Any recommendation of the Committee would be given fast-track privilege in the House and Senate, assuring it of an up or down vote and preventing some from using procedural gimmicks to block action.
  • To Meet This Target, the Committee Will Consider Responsible Entitlement and Tax Reform. This means putting all the priorities of both parties on the table – including both entitlement reform and revenue-raising tax reform.

4. A STRONG ENFORCEMENT MECHANISM TO MAKE ALL SIDES COME TOGETHER

  • The Deal Includes An Automatic Sequester to Ensure That At Least $1.2 Trillion in Deficit Reduction Is Achieved By 2013 Beyond the Discretionary Caps: The deal includes an automatic sequester on certain spending programs to ensure that—between the Committee and the trigger—we at least put in place an additional $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction by 2013.
  • Consistent With Past Practice, Sequester Would Be Divided Equally Between Defense and Non-Defense Programs and Exempt Social Security, Medicaid, and Low-Income Programs: Consistent with the bipartisan precedents established in the 1980s and 1990s, the sequester would be divided equally between defense and non-defense program, and it would exempt Social Security, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, programs for low-income families, and civilian and military retirement. Likewise, any cuts to Medicare would be capped and limited to the provider side.
  • Sequester Would Provide a Strong Incentive for Both Sides to Come to the Table:  If the fiscal committee took no action, the deal would automatically add nearly $500 billion in defense cuts on top of cuts already made, and, at the same time, it would cut critical programs like infrastructure or education.  That outcome would be unacceptable to many Republicans and Democrats alike – creating pressure for a bipartisan agreement without requiring the threat of a default with unthinkable consequences for our economy.

5. A BALANCED DEAL CONSISTENT WITH THE PRESIDENT’S COMMITMENT TO SHARED SACRIFICE

  • The Deal Sets the Stage for Balanced Deficit Reduction, Consistent with the President’s Values: The deal is designed to achieve balanced deficit reduction, consistent with the values the President articulated in his April Fiscal Framework. The discretionary savings are spread between both domestic and defense spending. And the President will demand that the Committee pursue a balanced deficit reduction package, where any entitlement reforms are coupled with revenue-raising tax reform that asks for the most fortunate Americans to sacrifice.
  • The Enforcement Mechanism Complements the Forcing Event Already In Law – the Expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts – To Create Pressure for a Balanced Deal: The Bush tax cuts expire as of 1/1/2013, the same date that the spending sequester would go into effect. These two events together will force balanced deficit reduction. Absent a balanced deal, it would enable the President to use his veto pen to ensure nearly $1 trillion in additional deficit reduction by not extending the high-income tax cuts.
  • In Securing this Bipartisan Deal, the President Rejected Proposals that Would Have Placed the Sole Burden of Deficit Reduction on Low-Income or Middle-Class Families: The President stood firmly against proposals that would have placed the sole burden of deficit reduction on lower-income and middle-class families. This includes not only proposals in the House Republican Budget that would have undermined the core commitments of Medicare to our seniors and forced tens of millions of low-income Americans to go without health insurance, but also enforcement mechanisms that would have forced automatic cuts to low-income programs. The enforcement mechanism in the deal exempts Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare benefits, unemployment insurance, programs for low-income families, and civilian and military retirement.

Inserted from <The White House>

Needless to say, the above description is very heavily spun, but it’s the most complete description of the nuts and bolts I could find.

Here is Obama’s description:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

I do have to say one thing in defense of the Democrats involved.  Democrats will always be at a disadvantage in such negotiations.  Democrats care enough about the well being of the American people that they recognize the need to protect us from the worst case scenario.  Republicans have no such compunctions.  They care only for the greed of millionaires, billionaires and corporate criminals and for the establishment of a permanent one-party corporate dictatorship.

Maybe they would try to make the government smaller, but ‘government that does not interfere in citizens’ private lives’ I’m sure is a terrible lie.

From kritik1 on July 18, 2011 at 5:17 pm

Imagine your social security check in the hands of thugs. Your medicare controlled by thugs. Teachers and fireman cannot have rights because there is no union or a fair union agreement for fair pay or fair working conditions. Besides your 35 year old pension many be abused by private company that will use the money deposited as a trust to be invested where there may be greater risk for profit as well as greater risks for losses. What can be more lucrative than ‘playing with other people’s money’ Be ready to accept job for the sweat shop. Or are you really angry to say that this is un-thinkable, it should be stopped. Next, Big government pulverized to small government would mean the same thing; back to the Enron Era and the World Com debacle. We will see Earnie Madoff control the private sector from behind the bars. No rules and regulation, no Sarbanes-Oxley Act to be accountable for any transactions. You can take this seriously or you can take this as a total lie, (half of me is already 3 feet under, 3 more and I will make it to the 6 feet mark) the choice is yours.

From kritik1 on July 18, 2011 at 4:56 pm

People have learnt to adopt words that are not so repulsive. Once proudly spelt out the word ‘capitalist’ is out of flavor because it has a ‘corrupt’ connotation to it. So a capitalist these days call themselves progressives, which has nothing to do to becoming or being progressive. The same old bad attitude just a different name. They may change the definition of progressive to explain who they are, but that is insidious.

The other words or phrases used are ‘big government’, ‘small government’ Here again there is malicious manipulation in mind. They want to shut down practically all the government and the government departments so that everything is privatized subsequently there are no rules and regulations to worry about, the only rules would be the day-to-day rules to suit their needs making them the legal authority. Seems like an evil plan. cannot work in the long run.

From Lisa G. on July 16, 2011 at 1:01 pm

If this were true, they would stay out of people’s personal lives like abortion, LBGT rights, Planned Parenthood, etc.

From SoINeedAName on July 16, 2011 at 10:38 am

Seems like the clause "that does not interfere in citizens’ private lives" makes the statement a Lie. (I’d go along with the part WRT its favoring small government.)

I voted “lie”.  The Teabaggers, just like their Republican owners,  favor small unobtrusive government only when it comes to making millionaires pay their fair share and regulating corporate criminals.  But regarding people’s private lives they want government huge and intrusive enough to interfere with who people chose to be their partner, to stand between women and their doctors, and to force every teacher to ignore science and revise history.  Government in every bedroom, doctor’s office and classroom is neither small nor unobtrusive

We have a new poll.  Vote now. It may have a very short lifespan.
