Gore Slams Murdoch!

No single individual has done more harm to the objectivity of world media than Rupert Murdoch.  He has turned Fox into the Republican Ministry of Propaganda.  Since he took over the Wall Street Journal it has devolved from too conservative into overly reactionary.  His outlets have an unequalled propensity to manufacture so-called β€œfacts” to suit their extreme-right agenda.  He provides his own mannequins to represent the left and, whenever possible, he tries to silence authentic left wing voices.  For that reason, Al Gore tore into him.

24MurdochFormer Vice President Al Gore has blasted Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. for removing Current TV from Sky Italia. Gore charges that this is an abuse of power triggered by Current TV hiring Keith Olbermann for his long-awaited new show that will begin next month.

Gore’s charge rings true. I do not have the smoking gun, but it is outrageous that Murdoch or News Corp. would remove Current TV for any reason. The Italian government should look into this matter…

…The issue with Murdoch is more troubling because it does involve, as Gore charges, an abuse of power. To remove Current TV from Sky Italia is cheating Murdoch’s customers of a valuable option, and cheating the democratic discourse of a valuable voice.

This also furthers a disturbing trend among some on the right. If they do not like a voice or an opinion, they try to silence it. If they do not like facts or science, they try to deny them… [emphasis added]

This story illustrates why I oppose the merger between Comcast and NBC.  When content providers and content distributors share the same ownership, like News Corp and Sky Italia, abuse is likely.

Murdoch’s misanthropic right-wing propaganda cannot compete with well documented content from Keith Olbermann.

  1. Rupert Murdoch is a vindictive, thin skinned slimy reactionary with absolutely no journalistic integrity at all. You and Gore are totally right to slam this elitist liar. I am finishing a post which will run tomorrow over at my site slamming him too. The jerk is worthy of nothing but contempt.

  2. If any good can come from this, maybe it’ll be a monkey wrench in Murdoch’s attempt to buy BSkyB

Gore also noted that the incident should give pause to UK decision makers, who are currently reviewing a proposal for News Corp. to become the sole owner of BSkyB:

“I know that News Corp is close to reaching an agreement to buy BSkyB. Now I may not be a party to that debate, but if anybody believes that [News Corp] will remain hands off if there are diverse opinions that do not agree with its ideological agenda then they are fools. This is proof positive of their abuse of power,” Gore said.

NOTE: That link also includes a number of Keith’s Tweets WRT this issue.

  3. If opposing positions can’t be heard, then how will anyone know how to vote? This takes away the very fabric of journalistic integrity. Murdoch is an ass and how a liberal could be married to him, I’ll never know. Plus, he’s ugly. 😑
