Is NY-26 a Bellwether?

An interesting race is taking shape in New York’s 26th Congressional District, largely because a Democrat actually has a chance to win in one of the most heavily gerrymandered districts, in favor of Republicans, in the country.  Jane Corwin, the favored Republican, is opposed by Democrat, Kathleen Hochul, and Teabagger, Jack Davis.  Kathleen has been running on her own, while Corwin has been getting help from Boehner and others.

10NY26Speaker of The House John Boehner made a quick stop Monday afternoon in Western New York to support Republican Jane Corwin as the race in the 26th congressional district heats up.

At a fund raiser for Corwin’s campaign at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens, Boehner said "Washington Democrats are hoping they can steal this election." He added, "I’m here to say we have to do everything in our power to win this election."

Corwin opened the event saying there is "a clear difference between herself and her opponents." According to Corwin, the other candidates in the race both believe more government is the answer.

With just two weeks left before the May 24th Special Election, a recent Sienna College poll had Corwin in front with 36% of the vote, Hochul holding 31%, and Davis at 23%.

Boehner’s visit shows the kind of resources the GOP is now dedicating to this race. Buffalo State College Professor Bruce Fisher talked to Channel 2 News about the visit.

"The Republicans desperately want to win this because they’d like for their Medicare plan not to be the issue, but the problem is their Medicare plan is the issue," said Fisher.

Corwin supports a Republican party plan that would change Medicare to a government voucher program beginning in 2022… [emphasis added]

Corwin is the one on the right with the beady eyes and vacuous expression.  In typical Republican fashion, the gap between her claims and truth is more than significant.

10NY26-2Read Jane L. Corwin’s campaign literature, and she appears to be a woman who has managed to have it all.

According to her publicity and fundraising documents, Corwin, a full-time mother of three, also "spent 36 years as a successful businesswoman" before being elected to the Assembly in 2008.

But since the Republican congressional candidate was 44 when she won election to the Assembly, that would mean she’s been a "successful businesswoman" since age 8.

"How can she have been a successful .businesswoman for 36 years before she went into the Assembly when she was only 44 in 2008," asked Curtis W. Ellis, spokesman for Jack Davis, the Tea Party candidate.

"Exaggeration is not unheard of in politics, but this is taking it to an extreme," added Leonard R. Lenihan, chairman of the Erie County Democratic Party and a supporter of Kathleen C. Hochul, that party’s candidate… [emphasis added]

A more recent poll that the one mentioned above is much more favorable to Kathleen.  Rachel Maddow demonstrates how Republican policies are impacting the race, blames John Boehner, and discusses it with Chris Hayes.

Her coverage may be too obvious, because if Agent Orange were competent and/or honest, he could never assume a Republican leadership role.  And, if Kathleen Hochul actually pulls this out, it could portend major gains for Democrats in 2012.

  1. Public Policy Polling for Daily Kos and SEIU (5/5-8, likely voters, no trendlines):

    Kathy Hochul (D): 35
    Jane Corwin (R): 31
    Jack Davis (T): 24
    Ian Murphy (G): 2
    Undecided: 8

    (MoE: ±3.0%)

I think that if two things happen we got a real shot at gaining this seat:
[1] They continue to make this special election (on 5/24/11) a referendum on the Ryan “We’re-Going-to-End-Your-Medicare” Plan
[2] Davis can hold his Teabaggers’ vote (it’s one thing to say something to a pollster, and another to actually pull a lever)

  2. that would mean she’s been a “successful businesswoman” since age 8.

Well, those types aren’t real big on child-labor laws…..

Hochul should not be “running on her own”. We’ve clearly got a real chance here and she should be getting all the help the party can provide.

  3. Go Hochul! Corwin is just another lying Republican who will sell everybody out for her own gain.

  4. Looks like Dems are starting to invest in the race.

  5. I think Hochul is gonna pull this one out. With the demographics being what they are and the noose of the Ryan plan hung around their necks, they are gonna lose and lose big. 😆
