Yet another Republican is involved in a sex scandal.  That’s barely news.  What is news is that Christopher Lee (R-NY) actually resigned.  There were no excuses about having a wide stance or running off to C Street House for pseudo-Christian help in covering it up.  Once it was clear that he was busted, he apologized and left.  That’s most un-Republican!  Had he not quit, I would not be calling for his ouster, because there is something else unusual about this Republican.  He has not jumped on the Republican bandwagon of demanding that everyone else follow the extreme dogma of religious right pseudo-Christianity.  Therefore he does not share the hypocrisy that is a badge of dishonor for the party as a whole.  What he did was wrong, but righting that wrong is a matter between him and his family.

10Chris_LeeRepresentative Christopher Lee of New York abruptly resigned on Wednesday night after a shirtless photo of himself, which he had e-mailed to a woman, was published on the Internet.

Mr. Lee, a two-term Republican from western New York, notified the House speaker, John A. Boehner, of his decision in a letter on Wednesday afternoon, after the scandal had erupted, according to senior Congressional officials.

Mr. Lee’s office released a statement in which he asked for forgiveness. “I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents,” he wrote. “I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”

The resignation came hours after Gawker, a gossip Web site, published an e-mail exchange that Mr. Lee, who is married and has a son, had with a 34-year-old Maryland woman he had met through Craigslist.  [emphasis added]

I hope that Mr. Lee finds peace within himself and his family.

Isn’t it sad that the most dishonest politicians like Larry Craig and John Ensign (R-NV) are the ones who cling to power?

  1. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Lee’s rapid departure might be related to the possibility that there are a few more shoes to drop WRT his personal life.
But the irony of Lee’s own posting WRT technology on his very own United States House of Representatives webpage is to die for:

Through the Internet, with a few keystrokes and the click of a button, a young person can call up information for a research project, make new friends or discover new hobbies.
At the same time, responding to what may seem like a friendly e-mail or an appealing marketing offer can have serious consequences.
Private information and images can so easily be transmitted to friends and strangers alike.

  2. Buh-bye and thank you for not making a spectacle of your wife and child.
