I would love to have been there, but alas, it was much to far away.  From what I understand, it put Beck’s tiny attempt to become a religious icon to shame.  Here’s an article that describes it quite well.

3rally Thousands of concerned Americans gathered on the National Mall Saturday to rally under the banner of “jobs, justice and education.” The rally, “One Nation Working Together,” represented an affirmation of American values, and an antidote to the ugly rhetoric of the Tea Party.

The One Nation Working Together rally included hundreds of groups representing all Americans, including Latinos, blacks, senior citizens, students, educators, members of the GLBT community, as well as social, labor and environmental activists

…The One Nation Working Together rally created a show of force that rivals and surpasses the conservative tea party movement, a force for goodness and light, a force that must combat the evil and darkness of the Tea Party.

The Tea Party is manned by the ignorant and motivated by manufactured fear bought and produced by corporate interests, and sold by amoral fear merchants and demagogues like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.

The One Nation Working Together rally proved to be an antidote to Tea Party tyranny, offering Americans real answers, rather than hateful rhetoric… [emphasis added]

As good as this article was, it missed what I consider to be a main point.  Progressive change, for now, can only come from Democrats.  Uniting behind them is the only way to keep Republicans out of power.

I’m not claiming that they deserve our loyalty and support.  But the Republican Party’s most progressive positions are the progress of your resources to the rich, the progress your rights to the toilet, and the progress of your environment to oblivion.  Third party votes for national office ususlly have no effect, due to the plurality system, and should be reserved for situations like the 1st District in SC, where I have endorsed Rob Groce.  The Democrat in the race is a Manchurian candidate installed by the Republicans.

  1. I have to admit – I didn’t hear anything about this rally. I guess I was out of the loop, but from what I read, it sounds as if it did pretty well. I love that I have yet to see a “liberal” website claim a million+ people attended the rally!

  2. The real rally has to happen among neighbors and getting the unmotivated away from the chips and dip to get off their ass in November.

  3. I’ve seen nothing either. If Stewart and Colbert had made the call to show up for them a million would have.

  4. The One Nation Rally has been quite the topic over at DailyKos for over a month now, so I had heard about it. And the largest estimate I’ve seen from yesterday’s crowd is 175,000 to 200,000 from Crooks and Liars.

If it does nothing else, I think it at least serves the purpose of stanching the MSM endless drivel about the “enthusiasm gap” – and helps progressives from feeling less beaten down. We’re not alone after all!

And I agree with OneFly that upcoming Stewart – Colbert “Rally to Restore Sanity”“March to Keep Fear Alive” on October 30th might very well draw 250,000!

  5. Well, I’ve seen quite a bit about it, including in the MSM, but not as much was seen with the coverage of Beck’s Come-To-Jesus farce. Interestingly, I was just thinking that the liberal blogs would be all over this but yours is one of the first.

  6. Between yesterday’s rally and the rallies by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert later this month, I hope the teabag hysteria will be sufficiently ridiculed to make the Republican victories in November a little bit less of a landslide.

  7. If you all had visited my blog last week you would have known about the rally! :-)))

TC, the crowd was not 1 million, but unlike the wingnuts we don’t worry about crowd size. The quality of the rally is more important then the quantity of people. This One Nation rally was about the American people and how we can get back on our feet as a nation, Beck/Palins was about turning back to God…..I guess they want God to solve all our problems while we sit back and do nothing but pray…

  8. I just left the following obervation at Sues:

“. . .it should be remembered that this rally didn’t get all the FREE pre-publicity from Fox and the MSM that Beck’s Come-to-Jesus meeting did. And the participants didn’t have fat-cats paying their transportation, food and hotel costs.”

  9. I didn’t hear anything about this rally either, until last night. Which is f’ed up – I get emails from all kinds of “progressive” groups and unions, so it would have been nice had ONE of them SAID SOMETHING, since I live 2 HOURS down the freakin’ road!! 👿

    • Well, Progressive Democrats Of America promoted it extensively. Join the email list and I’ll promise you that you won’t miss out ever again! 🙂

  10. I think the media for some reason much prefers to cover the nutjobs on the right because they probably think they are bigger ratings-generators. I too didn’t know much about this rally until some Facebook friends and bloggers spread the news. By then I had already decided to go to Jon Stewart’s rally to Restore Sanity on 10/30. If the media don’t cover that one then we’ll know what side they’re on, for sure!

  11. I too prescribe to many liberal sites and had not heard word one about this rally, but Otis and I are seriously considering attending Stewart’s rally at the end of the month. Can’t wait to show up the teabaggers on that one! 😛
