For many years the Republican Party has done everything in their power to deprive poor and middle class children of their right to an education.  Then they get to spend the money educating rich kids.  Also, the ignorant are more easy to control, and the only chance Republicans have to stay in power long term is to create an electorate with no critical thinking skills, one that will react as programmed to mindless Republican propaganda.  Sadly, that is now possible, and Elizabeth Warren thinks it stinks!

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos finds herself under fire once again, this time for a proposed $10.6 billion budget cut to her department. And much as she did during DeVos’ confirmation hearing in February, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is leading the opposition.

Since January, when DeVos was handpicked for the role, "the big complaint was that this is a woman who does not believe in public education," Warren argued Monday. "Well she just proved it."

"They want to take away 22 programs that help kids K through 12," she continued…

  1. As I said in the open thread, there is a multitude of petitions opposing this budget on various grounds.  And education, of course, is one.  "They want to make sure that more students stay in debt longer."  Yeah, that'll do.  But they don't want "those people" to get loans and attempt to get educated in the first place.  As you say so well, TC.

  2. WOW! That's inhuman! DeVos and tRump are trying to make it to where NOBODY gets a college, let alone a K-12, education! That is cutting the meat from the bone and tossing it in the trash! Those Pell grants and the other grants that kids can get free the only way some kids get to go to college, let alone the damn student loans! They are making money off of kids trying to get an education! That's barbaric! Somehow, some way, we gotta get ALL of 45's cabinet OUT, along with 45!!! His cabinet picks were designed to be the end of what ever he picked them for! Look at Scott Pruitt! He is trying his best to shut down ALL of the EPA!!!! UGH!!! Utter disasters, every one of them!!!

    Stay strong and RESIST!!!!

  3. When Betsy DeVos was blocked from entering a public school by protestors she confronted one them and said, "Ma'am, you can NOT block me from entering this church."

PROTESTOR: "Ma'am, this is a public school."

DEVOS: "With me as Sec. of Education, NOT FOR LONG!"

OK – it's apocryphal – but could be true!

It's too long for just a Comment, but I would encourage everyone to read (if you haven't) Jamie Vollmer (originally the maker of what was voted "The Best Ice Cream in America") "Blueberry Story".

But in case you can't – I'll give the punchline when he's confronted by a teacher talking about his ice cream making, because it's just too rich:

"Mr. Vollmer," she said, leaning forward with a wicked eyebrow raised to the sky, "when you are standing on your receiving dock and you see an inferior shipment of blueberries arrive, what do you do?"

In the silence of that room, I could hear the trap snap. I was dead meat, but I wasn't going to lie.

    "I send them back."

She jumped to her feet. "That's right!" she barked, "and we can never send back our blueberries. We take them big, small, rich, poor, gifted, exceptional, abused, frightened, confident, homeless, rude, and brilliant. We take them with ADHD, junior rheumatoid arthritis, and English as their second language. We take them all! Every one! And that, Mr. Vollmer, is why it's not a business. It's school!"

  4. De Vos is just the latest version of the wicked witch, or Cruella De Ville, even better!  Donny Boy proposed, and the Rethugs approved, the toxic cabinet choices.  Each one fits into their long term agenda to destroy anything that is sensible in the way the country is run, for the sake of greed!  And, they all like o think of themselves as good Christians!  Too bad the idea of Hell is nothing but ancient myth, derived from ancient Zoroastrian concepts.  Once they created something of Light, like their God, there had to be a counter-point of Dark!

    • The question really is who is pulling the strings Trump or Bannon?

Trump is a follower of Bannon, but we can bamle Trump as he is in the head of the line.

Both need to be gotton rid of.

  5. It seems to me that the child denied  proper affordable education and opportunities might have been the one to discover a cure for cancer had the education and opportunities been available.  Elizabeth Warren is correct.  People can't stop dreaming but they must fight for those dreams.

Drumpfenfarten and his cabal of unqualified Republican sycophants must be tossed to the side of the road like yesterday's trash if the country is to survive.  No recycling!

    Resist and Persist!!!

  6. Elizabeth Warren has reason to be furious and you can leave it to her to state within moments clearly and precisely what is wrong with this new Budget. Kudos to Liz!

The deliberate "dumbing down" of America by Republicans has been the subject of many a post here, but never before has it been so blatantly effected by an administration that has been handpicked for its own incompetence and stupidity. Betsy DeVos' "budget" is despicable and has no basis beyond greed, selfishness and elitism thinly veiled as "smaller government and less governmental interfering". It doesn't seem to matter that these cuts are diagonally opposed to anything that remotely makes America great again. It only makes the rich white 1% richer and more powerful. If DeVos is anything to go by, it doesn't make them any smarter.

Of course DeVos' educational budget and its insufferable cuts are an upbeat to the Drumpfian new tax plan, which needs to cut down on everything going to the 99% to give more to the 1% and in the coming days we'll undoubtedly hear of many more of these budget cuts. They need to be resisted and fought, every one of them.

  7. Thanks all!  Hugs!

  8. My whole life, since my 15th year was spent in educating. I'm now retired, since 2 years ago, at age 75. I started as my private high school's recommended summertime tutor for kids, who hadn't mastered the materials to be covered by the end of their grade year. I ended up as one of Princeton University's first female recipients of their Ph. D. degree, whereupon, I began my career as a university professor. It is because of my background, that I understand how important a factor education is in determining how a person succeeds as an adult.

In this day & age, we must have well-educated people, just to deal with all of the complexities of our world. With the mechanization & digitalization of so many aspects of our lives, not to mention the "overloads" of information we get every day, we MUST have the appropriate training, just to "process" all this information. Betsy De Vos sounds like the antithesis of somone upon whose shoulders rest the future maintenance & improvements needed for our educational system, just to keep up, not to mention excell!
