Will Republicans Compromise?

I could not help noticing in the statements from the Republican leadership that they hoped to be able to find areas of agreement with President Obama, and that they would work together to compromise.  Is that a realistic expectation?  I think not.  For the last six years, the Republican Party has been cultivating the support from people like the caller in the following article.  Such racists have become their base and most dependable followers.

1107ObamahateA man who called into C-SPAN’s "Washington Journal" Thursday morning referred to President Barack Obama as "that n***er" before getting booted off the air.

The caller, who gave his name as Anthony from San Diego, California, identified himself as a Republican and started out talking about the direction he thinks the new GOP majority in Congress should take.

"I would just like to say, that the Republicans — and I’m a Republican — please do not overreach," the caller began. "I know they’re going to overreach but I’m telling you, if you advocate for the repeal of Obamacare and you get too extreme, then Hillary Clinton will be elected President in 2016."

"This is about race," he added. "The Republicans hate that nigger Obama."…

Hard to believe?  Here’s the video.

This is the tail that wags the Republican dog.

Rachel Maddow dedicated two segments to the possibility if cooperation.  In the first, she examines that the Republican bubble machine is saying and what the actual politicians are doing.

If you can’t see it here try this link on MSNBC.

It appears to me that Republicans are feigning congeniality and promising compromise to keep Obama from acting while Democrats still have a Senate majority.  Obama believed them, in 2009 when they were promising compromise on Obamacare.  To believe them now, especially given that sign, would be foolish indeed.

In the second segment, Rachel shows how they have inflamed the public against Obama and how Obama is calling them out to actually govern.

I could not fine either clip on YouTube.

I won’t be holding my breath.

Finally, consider Eric Cantor.  All it took was a hint that he would be willing to compromise to cost him his seat.  Even if some in the Republican majority want to compromise, the threat of being primaried from the right and TEAbuggered out of office will Keep them goose-stepping with the most rabid segments of the base.

Now, both Agent Orange and Bought Bitch Mitch are promising to be nice, but saying that unilateral action from Obama would be like waving a red flag at a bull.  That’s too much bull to resist waving the flag.

  1. Thanks for this TC – it was very interesting to see Rachel Maddows list of previous Senate majorities working with a President of a different party – and then she wondered if the Repugs would work with President Obama – and I said 'Not in a million years' whilst watching the video.  I didn't know that they had said at any point that they would – though apparently they did at one point (who on earth would have believed that?!) – and then they held a press conference in front of a big red 'stop obama' sign.  Never mind that a majority voted for President Obama, never mind that he was elected despite gerrymandering and vote rigging on the Right – the Repugs are open in their contempt for democracy and for the American electoral system when they say 'stop obama'.

  2. This is what chaps my hide!  Because the democrats are for all people white, black, gay, rich or poor right?  If so why did they push Obama to side of road without taking the wonderful opportunity tell them about healthcare, equal pay, rights for women, education for all and so on and so on?  No it they talk the talk but some can not walk the talk.  The republian/teaparty have scared them to death.

  3. Oh  as far as compromise lol I guess as long s Obama bends over

  4. I predict the House and Senate will continue to obstruct and not govern. The  will end up being as reviled as New Gingrich was at the end of his "Leadership". The two stumble-bums in control of both houses don't know what they ar doing. And they had the nerve to warn our President not to act hastily on immigration.

  5. Speaking of Eric Cantor, did you see this? He's upset that Pres. Obama didn't call him after he lost his primary. LOL

  6. You know, I realize people thimk the word "politician" is a dirty word.  But when we had politicians governing, that was when there could be compromise.  The people who are in Congress now (always with exceptions) are not politicians but puppets.  Puppets can't comprimise, even if one can imagine they might want to, because they are not in control of their own business.  No, we won't see Republicans compromise.  For some reason they are getting paid to talk that way.  Probably to put them in a position to project later.

  7. Surely you JEST!! Oh the IRONY,Just appointed to head the environmental committee. JAMES IMHOFFE!!!

an ignorant, stupid man and avid climate change denier.!Look Out EPA, you do not have a snowballs chance in hell.

Carbon pollution will be on the rise and fracking and pipelines will flourish!.

I am SO sick f hearing from repugs that they are" NOT a scientist". may I suggest that basic science text books be handed out to all of them ,and let those ,who can actually read will do so. (NO text books from TEXAS however!.)

want a bet?. I bet thhat the current legislators in Washington, have the lowest cumulative !Q ever recorded when compared to earlier  members.

How sad!,(may I also point that also applies to the general voting public, who due to apathy, stupidity, racism, etc. were unwilling or unable to get their obese selves away from the tellie,et.al. and VOTE.Oh my  may they get a rude awakeningin the near future,

    • Imhoffe was the subject of a short discussion between Bill Maher and Bernie Sanders on Bill's show Friday night. Sen. Sanders was very polite.

  8. The repuklicanTs will NEVER, EVER, EVER compromise, cooperate, or try to get things done. They have a signed contract with that one person and they will not go back on that promise!

  9. I think the RepubliCONs will Compromise..they'll compromise America's integrity, safety, & world standing.

I think they will pour more money into War, leech Medicare, Social Security, & all public service programs, give Corporations Everything they can think of, and Cause Massive Social Disruptions in the process! 🙁

But, hey, the Democrats can Win in 2016 – IF the Party shifts to supporting ONLY real Liberal Democrats!

  10. The Republicans will compromise when pigs fly.  Mitch has said for the last six years that his main goal was to prevent Obama from accomplishing anything while in office.  As Senate majority leader, he has full reign to do just that.  Of course they will not compromise.

  11. "… statements from the Republican leadership that they hoped to be able to find areas of agreement with President Obama, and that they would work together to compromise."

Work to compromise?  Republicanus/Teabaggers?  That is a non sequitor, a total oxymoron, heavy on moron where the Republicanus/Teabaggers are concerned!

They do not have the ability or the brains to govern.  Good governance is a science, albeit not an exact science.  I think that the first, or at least a higher up rule of good governance is to LISTEN to the people.  Just saying that good governance is a science is guaranteed to have the Republicanus/Teabaggers running in the opposite direction.

I hope all you Progressives have had your rabies shots.  With a Congress dominated by a bunch of rabid  elephants who are likely to shit all over the country, you'll need the protection of the rabies vaccine.

  12. Another related (I think) thought: if the country in general is now so opposed to Obama, the first Black president (despite the 2012 popular vote), is it ready for a female president?

Let's face it, the first Black president is a big milestone in the US. But has the milk of that achievement soured the people towards a female president?

The US has traditionally had older white male presidents. We know that the Republicanus/Teabaggers operate as a bunch of older angry white males with their cigars and Kentucky bourbon, determined to take the country backwards into the 18th century.

My guess, a Democrat woman will have difficulty living in the White House as president because the Republicanus/Teabaggers believe women should be barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen, not the Oval Office. Having said that, the GOP is sure running scared of Hillary, already with the attack ads. Although Hillary is not my preferred choice, I'd love to see her clean the Republicanus/Teabagger clocks!

    • Lynn says "Having said that, the GOP is sure running scared of Hillary, already with the attack ads. Although Hillary is not my preferred choice, I'd love to see her clean the Republicanus/Teabagger clocks"

I 100% agree.  If the democrats play the card that Clinton has been around for ages and think that Warren is a better choice decide to vote IND because they are just plain >>>>..  2014 will be only the tip of the iceberg. 2016 will be devastating for our country.  All the work Obama was done will be for nothing..  I guess you can say I say I am still in limbo because of Nov 4.

  13. I'm bleary eyed,  See personal update.  Hugs!

  14. If President Obama takes a stand and continues to support his and the Democrats positions on major issues will the elected Democrats in Congress support him? The main issue, in this election was the absence of promoting all the good work Democrats have accomplished. They abandoned the party to run as ghost independents because they thought it would hurt their chances of getting elected as a true blue Democrat or Blue Dog – no guts, no glory. The American people want to see a politician stand up for what they believe and Democrats in some cases did not push the Democratic agenda, therefore voters rejected some Democratic candidates. The electorate did pass many issue driven ballot questions that were strongly supported by Democrats, but refused to support Democratic candidates who didn't have the intestinal fortitude to stand up for the President and the Democratic principles, accomplishments and issues. This had better change NOW.

    • On line five in my statement above I should have said, "NOT as a Blue Dog". Sorry for my brain fart. I am tired of thinking about all the angles in the political scene. Peace, love and flowers in the universal flow of life.

    • I agree with you, the democrats did not "stand up".  Grimes was neck and neck with McConnell until she refused to answer whether she had voted for Obama.  He was eight points ahead the next day. I think she shot herself in the foot then and there.

I do not expect the GOP to honor anything fitting this definition.
