Also going back to last week, in an email from the Vote Common Good PAC there was this: “Early results from our in-depth survey research on religious voters are starting to come in, and they are startling in the best possible way. For the first time, we’re asking the kinds of questions most polls skip — not just what religion someone checks on a form, but how their spiritual identity shapes how they show up in the world…and in the voting booth. I can’t share the details just yet — the study is still in progress — but I can tell you this: what we’re seeing is going to change how Democrats think about religious voters. It’s going to change how we train candidates, how we talk to persuadable voters, and how we win.” This makes me very interested in seeing the results of the survey. I have always felt there was more going on between people and religion – any religion – than met anyone’s eye, and certainly any politician’s eye. Jonathan Haidt’s work speaks to that, but not IMO fully, and in any case he’s not very well known. (I also think that “religion” is the wrong word for belief systems. The “lig” in “religion” is the same “lig” that is in “obligation,” and a belief system or a world view should be something more. But that’s neither here nor there.

I think I must address Joe Biden’s cancer diagnosis, which was characterized as “an aggressive form of prostate cancer which has metastasized to the bone.” Obviously this is a very serious diagnosis. It may not be a death sentence. This post from Democratic Underground (passed on from Threads) makes that point. Others who have written about their own experience with the same diagnosis report a wide range of outcomes. Some of those are in the comments at the same article. I don’t think I need to be a doctor to believe that a person’s general health outside particular diagnosis is a factor in how the body deals with any ailment. I’ve seen several places that hormone therapy is a possible alternative to chemo, and at least one added particularly with this diagnosis. I think we can have some confidence that Joe and his medical team will make the best possible choice. That said, nothing is certain. *Incidentally, Jacques Trudeau sent a message of support in English and French.)

Talking Points Memo addresses certain abuses of power which we all knew were coming, but at least are not targeting the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Which does not make them any less disgusting.

This is from Wonkette from Friday. I apologize for taking so long – but there’s nothing that really can be done about this story – I doubt whether overturning Dobbs would even prevent a repeat – you’ll see why. And we’ve already been fighting racism and misogyny for uncountable years but this happened anyway – I should say “is happening.”

And this, by Heather Cox Richardson, is from Thursday. It is the history of the Magna Carta. And it is ironic* that I can post it the day after I went on a rant about what royal life is really like – because it has been and still is a huge influence on why monarchies in Europe today are Constitutional Monarchies. Now we ned to ensure that the Kumquat Kleptocrat does not get his hands on our contemporary copy. (*See – irony is not dead.)

Yesterday, Trinette was by to bring in mail, take out trash and recyclables, and start the car. (Hi back to all.) While here, she noticed I had acquired an HD antenna and had not done anything with it. I know you all think I am highly computer literate, but the truth is, I had no more idea what to do with it than a dog who has caught a car. With a book or pamphlet of instructions, I could have coped, but it didn’t come with one. But Trinette got it working and set on PBS in practically no time. What a gem!

As a veteran, I’m deeply interested in this, because no one can be a MAGAt and a good soldier at the same time, any more than one can be a MAGAt and a patriot at the same time. The mention of individual unit commanders developing their own training tells me two things – first, that there are multiple unit commanders whose hearts are in the right place (and in sync with their brains), and second, that these commanders’ own superior officers have failed them. Yes, there’s much more to get out of this report; those were just what struck me.

Dearfield, Colorado, a town in Weld County (Northeast of Denver), now a ghost town, began to be homesteaded by black people in 1910. Eventually it became the home of 300 people of color, making it the largest black homestead in the state. It is already on the National Register of Historic Places. Now, descendants of the homesteaders, historians, and others who care, want it to be designated as a National Park. I for one certainly hope the effort succeeds.

Yesterday, I got to thinking that a House of Representatives with no Speaker, at a time when we have no budget, and have our foreign policy focused on the Middle East shooting war, is pretty damned convenient for Russia. Ukraine is holding strong so far, but there’s going to come a point when it will need resources badly. Is anyone investigating, or contemplating investigating, Matt Gaetz for being a Russian agent? Yes, I know he’s a pedophile and is himself intellectually and emotionally an adolescent (and will probably never grow up.) But that doesn’t mean he can’t be useful to Russia. Au contraire. See the Food for Thought below.

The Root – What In The Actual Hell: CVS Abortion Med Mixup Led To Black Woman’s IVF Termination
Quote – [Timika] Thomas and her husband had trouble getting pregnant and after two ectopic pregnancies, Thomas had to have her fallopian tubes removed. Even though their insurance didn’t cover IVF, they decided to do it and pay out of pocket anyway. Thomas’ doctor prescribed a vaginal suppository to replace the injections required to jumpstart her hormones. After taking two of her required doses, she immediately knew something was wrong…. “They just killed my baby. Both my babies, because I transferred two embryos,” [Thomas said.]
Click through for story. This would be unacceptable, no matter how the pregnancy occurred, but for an IVF pregnancy it’s exponentially worse. IVF is expensive, so expensive that it’s a last resort among fertility treatmernts. It often doesn’t “take” for multiple attempts. The best analogy I can come up with is – one is like you studued and worked hard, took the SAT or whateve they are using, sweat blood over your essay, and got turned down. the other is like you decided when you were five you wanted to go to a particular college and started saving monet from your allowance and odd jobs. You applied in your seniot year of high school and wewre turned down. You alloied in the first year after graduation and were turned down again. the second and third year after graduation you applied again and were turned down both times. Finally, in the fourth year after graduation, you applied and were accepted. Two days before freshman orientation the college burned down.

PolitiZoom – Anti-WOKE: Even Your Name Can Get Book Banned
Quote – Imagine if you will having had a successful career as a children’s book author. Your work has been widely acclaimed, published in a dozen languages and you’ve won lots of awards. Your work includes several series including a pair of them about siblings – one from the perspective of a little girl named Stella and the other from her little brother named Sam. The Stella series which ran from 1999 to the last book about Stella and Sam building a doghouse was published in 2013. including one about the adventures of a little girl named Stella and her brother…. Does the book delve into topics that might, only might mind you raise “content” questions about whether topics like human sexuality or race relations or religion are “age appropriate?” Nope, as I’ve stated it’s about a pair of siblings building a dog house. So by now you’re wondering why the hell this book wound up on a “we’ve got to BAN these books from the library” list in the first place. The author’s name is Mary-Louise GAY.
Click through for article. Yes, compared to the first short take, this is small potatoes indeed. But it still hurts people. And the people most harmed are among the most vulnerable.
