Yesterday, the radio opera was “The Pearl Fishers” by Bizet (who is more famous for “Carmen”). Carmen overshadows it, but it is performed occasionally. It contains an absolutely gorgeous duet for the tenor and the baritone which is frequently recorded and sung in concert, though. When the Met presented it on a Saturday with Matthew Polenzani (a tenor who is very popular and therefore had sung the duet a fair amount prior to playing the role) and the host asked him about the duet, he pointed out that until doing the full opera he had no idea that everything he was singing in it was a lie (and he is correct in that. But it’s still gorgeous.) The plot relies heavily on coincidence (not unusual in opera) and ends with massive destruction of property but no loss of life (both unusual in opera.) Not much of it rises to the standard of the duet, but it is still all very listenable. It’s also pretty short – barely two hours. I think I mentioned that my local station, which is public radio but not affiliated with NPR, couldn’t afford the second half of the summer broadcasts – especially after the federal funding loss – but what they decided to do was to play a recorded complete opera every week until the Met starts again. The announcer who owns a huge collection of recordings is not as old as I am, but is old enough that they may, like mine, all be on vinyl. Because The Pearl Fishers is short, when it was over and I went back to local, the opera he picked for today was still going – and I didn’t recognize it. Heck, I didn’t even recognize the language at first. My first guess was Russian, but I couldn’t exclude Czech – enough popular operas were written by Czech composers that it’s not all that unlikely. But as I heard more, I realized it was German and almost certainly Wagner; I thought I recognized the sword motif from the Ring Cycle. But when did a tenor have such a long monologue, followed by input from a bass and maybe a mezzo soprano? Maybe Lohengrin? And then I heard the tenor address the soprano as “Elsa.” Yup. It was Lohengrin. Sorry/not sorry about the “stream of consciousness” there. It seemed like a good opportunity to demonstrate that not only do I not know everything, I don’t even know as much as I think I know. The WFMT will be broadcasting Lohengrin from Bayreuth in three weeks, so I’ll get my chance to hear the whole thing (not for the first time either.)

I saved this from Democratic Underground for Sunday, so it’s not brand new. But it’s definitely good. I hope it catches on elsewhere.

This from The 19th is about a good response to a very bad situation. I’m sorry about the situation – but glad that at least something is being done.

This is from Wonkette Thursday, which I thought close enough to Sunday to hold. Even my Mom bought into the theory that if you tax rich people “too much” they’ll just move away. I guess this tax isn’t “too much” – whatever that means. (My feeling about that theory was always “Good riddance” anyway.)

Yesterday, I awoke with the joint where my right thumb meets my right hand just throbbing. I rubbed some cold formula sore muscle rub on it, which helped, and I put on an arthritis glove, which also helped. But I haven’t had full use of it all day – so of course this was the day that FIVE packages came, and one was very heavy. I managed to get them all into the house but not all opened. One of them was my new speakers about which I’ll say more when I can type better (and have tried them out.) I forwarded an email to a few of you – not all, because I don’t have my mailing list complete, and I didn’t send it to anyone outside the US. It was an email warning that ICE is now actively looking for immigrant children. Here’s the link that Daily Dose of Democracy provided for more information. If you have children, or grandchildren, or great-grandchildren down to age 10, you need to see it. If you know anyone who does, you will probably want to share it. Also, Don Froomkin of Press Watch says the Chicago apartment raid needs more attention. Here’s the link to his analysis, and here’s another to Heather Cox Richardson. I haven’t read both through as I type, but but the time you see this, I may have managed to read through both. But maybe not.  Tomorrow I’ll be going to see Virgil.

This from The Root is directed to the Black community. I don’t want anyone to panic, but it appears to me that everyone should be aware of this, not just people of color and in other underserved groups.

Some of that silence was just protocol. Generals don’t applaud (or at least, not when in uniform. See the Hatch Act.) But the further they got into the meeting, and especially with the two jerks soliciting applause, the louder a statement it became.

When the ACA was passed, I had coverage from prior employment as a retiree, and soon after that from Medicare. As y’all probably know, Medicare is complicated enough, and I wasn’t working in insurance (I never actually worked with life or health insurance anyway), so I depend on journalists to give me a sense of who qualifies for what and why. Wonkette is not the obvious journal to go to for that, but I think Robyn has done an impressive job of clarifying this.

Yesterday, the radio opera was Mozart’s “Le Nozze de Figaro,” usually translated “The Marriage of Figaro,” but more accurately “Figaro’s Wedding.” I didn’t know a soul in it – usually I know someone. I went to school with a Liz Bishop, but it can’t be the same. Yes, the character has to be old enough to be Figaro’s mother, because the is Figaro’s mother, but the Liz Bishop I knew would be 80, old enough to be his grandmother or maybe even great grandmother. Plus, this Elizabeth Bishop was raised in North Carolina, not California. In any case, it doesn’t matter. The opera, like the play on which it was based was scandalously revolutionary at the time, and Mozart needed special permission from the Emperor to stage it. Servants objecting to the wishes of a nobleman? And outwitting him in the end? Horrors! One of the plot points is the jus primae noctis, which was an actual thing in European history (one could apparently pay to get out of it.  But it’s also a plot point that Figaro didn’t have money.) I don’t know exactly when it was abolished so it could have still been customary at the time the story is set. In any case, it’s tough to go wrong with Mozart. One aria from this opera became the Macarena of its day – so overplayed that even Mozart joked about it. His sense of humor may not have been very sophisticated, but he certainly had one and it was robust. Then, later in the day, Theater of War streamed a live event (and recorded audio available any time,) and then after that there was the “NOT the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.” And I took in a grocery order which was over an hour late. It’s a wonder I managed to get this posted.

I would like to have “biglier” good news than the revocation of previous bad news to share. But this is a pretty consequential revocation, and I’m very relieved to see it.

In regard to the new contract for the Chicago Teachers Union, you may have to take my word for it that this is a huge (yooge?) win for teachers – and therefore for everyone. I was alerted to this by an email from “The Labor Force” which said (among other glowing praise) “This victory proves that even in times like these, we can fight, and we can win.” It also pointed out that CTU is spearheading a “May Day Strong” day of national action which you can learn about at this link, and find events near you. May Day, of course is Labor Day everywhere in the world except here. For a city that so much of what you hear about it is “violent crime,” I continue to be impressed by how progressive Chicago can be.
