I need to take the day off.  I could not sleep, because it was so muggy and sticky.  Then I came down with a bad case of Republicosis, and I’m not over it yet at Noon.

I exchanged texts with Nameless.  His mom went back in the hospital, and he had to go back there on Sunday.  I think it’s very serious, because he’s researching palliative care.  He asked me to let you all know.  Please keep them in your thoughts, prayers, or however you address the infinite.

The comparison with last December reveals, like last month, that we have fewer visitors, but the ones we have are visiting reading more articles.  That’s a good thing, I think.

Here is our ClustrMap for 2017.

ClustrMap12-2017

ClustrMap misses a lot of visits, because many visits can’t be easily traced to a location.  January’s YTD map will look quite sparse.

Here are our top five articles:

National Popular Vote for the Reich 9/29/2017 2,817
Jane Smiley: Capitalist Pigs 1/17/2010 694

It’s currently intermittently sunny, 40°, and 99% humidity, so I feel chilly and sweaty at the same time, but am not running a fever.  ARGH!!  I am still not well, but am improving.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:03 (average 4:35).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From CNN: Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Sunday he regretted not responding sooner to comments attributed to him that were critical of Donald Trump Jr. in an explosive new book on the White House.

"Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man," read Bannon’s statement, which CNN obtained Sunday from a source close to Bannon. "He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around."

The statement later adds: "I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president’s historical accomplishments in the first year of (Trump’s) presidency."

Dang!! Yesterday I begged for someone to give Putin’s Pervert a BJ. I did not expect such a speedy response. RESIST!!

Also from CNN: Trump initially misquoted conservative columnist Michael Goodwin with two tweets citing Goodwin as saying:

"’His is turning out to be an enormously consensual presidency. So much so that … there has never been a day that I wished Hillary Clinton were President. Not one. Indeed, as Trump’s accomplishments accumulate, the mere thought of Clinton in the W.H., doubling down on Obama’s … failed policies, washes away any doubts that America made the right choice. This was truly a change election, and the changes Trump is bringing are far-reaching and necessary.’ Thank you Michael Goodwin! (Please read entire column) mgoodwin@nypost.com"

Goodwin originally said "consequential", not consensual. The Trump residency is anything but consensual. It’s rape. RESIST!!

From Raw Story: Wikileaks has shared a link to the tell-all book about Donald Trump’s White House that has made waves in Washington D.C.

In a move that appeared to have the success of Michael Wolff’s tome Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House firmly in its crosshairs, the organization tweeted out a link to a full PDF of the book in a move that may have constituted copyright infringement.

Wikileaks is firmly entrenched in the Republican Reich. Their intent is to prevent Wolfe from selling his book, which is available right now for $18.00. I just bought the Audible version for $19.00. Down with Wikifreaks and GOP Pervert Assange! RESIST!!

I was planning to publish a normal load today, but you know what they say about the best laid plans of mice, men and cats.  I normally get up at 4:30 AM on Sunday.  That gives me time to dress, cook breakfast, eat, clean up, collect and lay out my shower supplies, collect and lay out my change of clothes, spend some time on the porcelain throne to unload a few Republicans, do my research for the day, and get a head start on writing, before Wendy arrives at 8:30.  I overslept this morning and awakened at 6:15.  I must need more sleep, as I dozed on the throne in mid-Republican.  I had virtually no time for research, so this is my only article today.

Short Take:

From Huffington Post: The size of oxygen-starved ocean “dead zones,” where plants and animals struggle to survive, has increased fourfold around the world, according to a new scientific analysis.

The growth of the zones is yet another consequence of global warming — including increasing ocean temperatures — triggered by greenhouse gases and, closer to the coasts, contamination by agricultural runoff and sewage.

“Rising nutrient loads coupled with climate change — each resulting from human activities — are changing ocean biogeochemistry and increasing oxygen consumption,” says the study published in the journal Science. Ultimately, such changes are “unsustainable and may result in ecosystem collapses, which ultimately will cause societal and economic harm.”

Steele Under Fire

Posted by at 1:24 pm  Politics

If you look back a few years, you might remember how ObamaCare was sailing through the Senate, with Public Option attached.  There was no rush, because Republicans appeared to be negotiating in good faith, with Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on the verge of agreement for the Republican side.  What we did not know is that Lindsey Poo and Snake in the Grassley were just stalling for time, to allow Republicans to organize their sabotage of the bill with their Koch funded Tea Party Town Halls.  We saved the bill, but we lost the Public Option.  Eight years later, Lindsey Poo and Snake in the Grassley have joined the Republican Reich to sabotage what had appeared to be a bipartisan Senate investigation of Russia’s election activities here.  They have asked DOJ to indict Christopher Steele, of all people.

0106PigsChristopher Steele is not the issue. Yet the former British intelligence official who wrote a series of unconfirmed reports on Trump-Russia connections during the 2016 campaign seems to have become the main target of congressional Republicans. On Friday, two Republican senators—Charles Grassley of Iowa and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina—released a letter they had sent the previous day to the Justice Department and the FBI requesting a criminal investigation of Steele. There have been no other known congressional criminal referrals related to the Russian attack on the 2016 presidential election or to interactions between Trump associates and Russians during the campaign.

In recent weeks, Capitol Hill Republicans have intensified both their attack on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Trump-Russia investigation and their call for a quick end to the congressional inquiries. And with this move, Grassley and Graham are trying to bolster the Republicans’ Trump-saving counter-narrative: the real scandal is the Steele dossier.

Pause for a moment and ponder this. The US intelligence community has concluded that Vladimir Putin ordered a clandestine act of information warfare against the United States to harm Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump during the election. And during that race, Trump’s camp had a series of contacts with Russians or suspected cut-outs. Also throughout the time Putin’s operation was under way, Trump and his lieutenants kept denying this assault was happening—even after his top campaign aides were informed that Moscow wanted to secretly assist Trump and after Trump was briefed by US intelligence agencies that Russia was behind the hack-and-dump assaults targeting Clinton and the Democrats. That is, the public now knows that the United States was attacked by Putin, that Trump associates were interacting with Russians during this period, and that Trump and his crew, intentionally or not, provided cover for Moscow by insisting no such operation was occurring.

Yet what now draws the ire of congressional Republicans the most is Steele and his reports… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Mother Jones>

I urge you to click through for the rest od David Corn’s article.

If KKK Beauregard manages to get one of his flunkies to indict Steele, that will make him unwilling to travel to the US to give testimony for the Mueller investigation.

Ari Melber also reported on this story.

Every time we think that Republicans could not get more vile, they do.

From YouTube (Late Show Channel): Trump Adjusts To Life Without Sloppy Steve

Does Trump call Bannon Sloppy Steve, because Trump doesn’t get him until Putin is done? RESIST!!

From Politico: Responding to several days of speculation about his mental well being and fitness for office, President Donald Trump defended himself on Twitter on Saturday morning as "very smart" and "a stable genius" in the wake of allegations contained in an incendiary book about the Trump administration released this week.

“Now that Russian collusion, after one year of intense study, has proven to be a total hoax on the American public, the Democrats and their lapdogs, the Fake News Mainstream Media, are taking out the old Ronald Reagan playbook and screaming mental stability and intelligence…..” the president tweeted at 7:19 a.m., hours before he was scheduled to meet with congressional GOP leaders at Camp David.

Several minutes later, Trump added: “…Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. Crooked Hillary Clinton also played these cards very hard and, as everyone knows, went down in flames. I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star….. [emphasis added]

Nobody will ever accuse that moron of modesty! RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: Donald J. Trump, legendary among U.S. Presidents for his aversion to reading, demanded on Thursday that members of his White House circle act out Michael Wolff’s new book, “Fire and Fury,” in a command performance in the Oval Office.

According to those who witnessed the dramatic presentation, Jared Kushner played the role of Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump played the role of Ivanka Trump, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders played Steve Bannon.

Sources who sat through the private performance of “Fire and Fury” said that Sanders’s portrayal of Bannon was particularly impressive.

“Sarah’s a natural,” one source said. “At the end of the day, acting is just lying.”

But the performer who “stole the show,” according to one source, was Eric Trump, who was cast in the role of his father.

Dang, Andy!! I’m surprised he didn’t shoot them! RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #107

Posted by at 10:47 am  Politics
Jan 062018

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.  These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.  Even though there are many more which I can’t include.  As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

Some truly terrible things have happened or become public this week, but tough to keep resisting when a story is so awful it sends you to pray at the porcelain altar.  So I won’t go into any detail about the woman in Russia who died this week of internal injuries after surviving for two years in a coma induced by the violent rape.  That may be the kind of incident that makes us feel life would be a lot better if there were more women running things  But let’s not get carried away:  the wrong women in power are just as bad as men, often worse.

For instance, let’s hope God tells Michele Bachman in no uncertain terms NOT to run for the Republican nomination for Senate.  But she is far from the only nut-job-ette out there, I’m sorry to say.  Take Arkansas (please, with apologies to Lenny Bruce).

In Arkansas, a – person – named Jan Morgan has been drumming up support from the right wing – the far right wing – looking toward the May Republican primary for Governor.  Here is how she, according to her website, think the state should keep people safe:

Crime has continued to rise in parts of the state. We must ensure we have the resources to protect the public.  This means prioritizing funding for our prisons, courts, and law enforcement over welfare programs and non-essential functions of government. We cannot fail on keeping our people safe. That is one of the primary purposes of state government.

She also supports gun rights and cutting taxes, and opposes Sharia law.  You can see that in the video at Mother Jones (click through) if you can stand to watch.  One of her objections to the current Republican Governor, Asa Hutchinson, is that he failed to sign a bill which would have outlawed Sharia Law in Arkansas’s court system.  Part of me wishes that he had signed it – if only we had the resources to challenge all the things that Fox Evangelicals want the law to say which are just like Sharia.  But we don’t.  We have bigger things to resist.

Alecto, would it be asking too much of you to monitor all the women candidates for public office and try to weed out the nut jobs?  Not that the male candidate bench isn’t also hip deep in nut jobs, but that really is too big to ask you.

And then there’s Twitter.  It has become a major harassment tool.  Among others, white nationalists and Nazi trolls love to play there.  Twitter has suspended many white nationalists, and decertified leaders of the “alt right,” but there is more work to do.

Yair Rosenberg was, according to the Anti Defamation League, the second most harassed Jesish journalist on Twitter during the 2016 election cycle.  That cycle is over, but the harassment of Rosenberg is not.  He decided to help do something about it.

And so last November, in the wake of Trump’s victory, I decided to turn the tables on them. My target? Impersonator trolls.

You probably haven’t heard of these trolls, but that is precisely why they are so pernicious. These bigots are not content to harass Jews and other minorities on Twitter; they seek to assume their identities and then defame them.

How does an impersonator troll work?  Well, he (or she) creates a new account that like the person they target, get and use the person’s own avatar, and then get into Twitter conversations and say things which – let’s just say the victim would never say – to make the victim look bad.

What would you think if suddenly TomCat started talking like Roy Moore, just to take a far out example?  PRetty scary?  Well, Rosenberg got assistance to create a bot to smoke them out.

Using a crowdsourced database of impersonator accounts, carefully curated by us to avoid any false positives, the bot patrolled Twitter and interjected whenever impostors tried to insinuate themselves into a discussion. Within days, our golem for the digital age had become a runaway success, garnering thousands of followers and numerous press write-ups. Most important, we received countless thank-yous from alerted would-be victims.

The impersonator trolls seethed. Some tried changing their user names to evade the bot (it didn’t work). Others simply reverted to their openly neo-Nazi personas. A few even tried to impersonate the bot, which was vastly preferable from our perspective and rather amusing.”

So guess who got banned?

You got it.  The bot.  The Nazis won.  Why???

This month, Twitter suspended the bot again, and this time refused to revive it. The company’s justifications were both entirely accurate and utterly absurd. “A large number of people have blocked you in response to high volumes of untargeted, unsolicited, or duplicative content or engagements from your account,” we were informed. This was true; Impostor Buster had been blocked by many neo-Nazis. “A large number of spam complaints have been filed against you.” Yes, by neo-Nazis. “You send large numbers of unsolicited replies or mentions.” Yes, to neo-Nazis.

The real threat, apparently, was not these trolls — who today continue to roam the platform unchallenged — but our effort to combat them.

Megaera, maybe you would look into this?

Finally, it is, I fear, time for more news on the 2020 Census and what the current regime is doing to destroy it.

Civil rights advocates have raised alarms because the Department of Justice has asked the U.S. Census to include a question about citizenship in its 2020 national survey. But the way the Trump administration has framed this request also shows it’s poised to make proof of citizenship the latest voter suppression tool.

As many civil rights groups have noted, asking immigrant families to disclose undocumented relatives will push people to evade Census takers or simply lie, causing an undercount and diverting federal funds away from locales with immigrant populations.

I feel pretty confident in saying there has NEVER been a question about citizenship on the Census “short form.”  One of the rights groups contesting this only went back to 1965, when the Voting Rights Act was enacted, to prove there has not been one since then – but I can’t imagine there having been one at ANY time before that.

Alabama already requires citizens to produce paper proof of citizenship when they register to vote in state elections, as do a handful of others.  But Federal voter registration is set up so that “every person who registers must declare they are a citizen and that their signature is a sworn legal oath.”

Republicans are interested in proof of citizenship to vote because they have noticed who is least likely to have it – minorities, the poor, the elderly, married women who changed their name upon marriage.  As many as a third of voting-age women may not have proof of citizenship that reflects their current name.

Speaking as a married woman who uses her married name, I can prove my citizenship, I think.  I cannot do it with a single document.  I have a contemporary copy of my birth certificate (a copy from 1945).  I think I have my first Social Security card in my maiden name – but, if I don’t, it’s on my DD214 with my maiden name.  I have my original marriage certificate, and I have my current Social Security card, showing the same number that was attached to me in my maiden name.  I have no idea whether THIS Department of Justice would accept that collection of documents.  I had a passport once, but I fear it’s been lost – and, in any case, it was in my maiden name too.

The Catch-22 here is that I believe if we VOTE in a new Congress we can win this.  But we need to be able to vote.  It might not hurt for all of us to check our files and be sure we have whatever documents we need in order to satisfy Big Brother.  Now.  Additionally, all our GOTV efforts need to address this issue in the communities they are working in.

Tisiphone, please educate and assist all our campaign staff and all our volunteers to be aware how important this is … including that we may need additional campaign funds to help people get their documents.  It seems to me like a poor use of campaign funds – but it might well turn out to be an extremely good investment.

The Furies and I will be back.

Obstruction Confirmed!

Posted by at 12:57 pm  Politics
Jan 052018

The news on the Republican  crimes is coming out faster that I can keep track it, and Mueller’s possession of notes taken by Rancid Reince Priebus confirming how Trump harassed James Comey say he was not under investigation could be huge!  Here’s Michael Schmidt’s report on it.

0105prebtrump

…The special counsel has received handwritten notes from Mr. Trump’s former chief of staff, Reince Priebus, showing that Mr. Trump talked to Mr. Priebus about how he had called Mr. Comey to urge him to say publicly that he was not under investigation. The president’s determination to fire Mr. Comey even led one White House lawyer to take the extraordinary step of misleading Mr. Trump about whether he had the authority to remove him.

The New York Times has also learned that four days before Mr. Comey was fired, one of Mr. Sessions’s aides asked a congressional staff member whether he had damaging information about Mr. Comey, part of an apparent effort to undermine the F.B.I. director. It was not clear whether Mr. Mueller’s investigators knew about this episode.

Mr. Mueller has also been examining a false statement that the president reportedly dictated on Air Force One in July in response to an article in The Times about a meeting that Trump campaign officials had with Russians in 2016. A new book, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” by Michael Wolff, says that the president’s lawyers believed that the statement was “an explicit attempt to throw sand into the investigation’s gears,” and that it led one of Mr. Trump’s spokesmen to quit because he believed it was obstruction of justice.

Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer dealing with the special counsel’s investigation, declined to comment….

Inserted from <NY Times>

Trump also tried to order KKK Beauregard not to recuse himself, so he could "protect" Trump from the investigation.  Rachel Maddow covered the story in detail in this interview with Michael Schmidt.

I hope this means that the Fuhrer will soon have a jump suit to match his face and hair.
