From Think Progress: A prominent LGBTQ rights organization, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced Thursday that it will host a presidential town hall on LGBTQ issues next month. The event will air on CNN.

LGBTQ advocacy groups told ThinkProgress that they know exactly what ideas they want to hear discussed at the town hall set for Oct. 10, which is National Coming Out Day. Many said that first and foremost, they want candidates to acknowledge the struggles of the most marginalized in the community, including LGBTQ people of color, and put forward policies to respond to anti-LGBTQ bias in the criminal justice system.

“LGBTQ people are more likely to come into contact with the police due to discriminatory policing, be incarcerated, and experience violence while locked up than non-LGBTQ people. Black and Latinx LGBTQ people are most impacted,” Tyrone Hanley, senior policy counsel for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, told ThinkProgress.

Hanley said that aspirants to the White House must put criminal justice reform as one of the issues topping their list. “Candidates must demonstrate an understanding that anti-LGBTQ discrimination and violence is impacted by issues of race, gender, and class just as they are for other communities,” he said.

The town hall comes at a critical time, as the Trump administration has rolled back health-care protections for transgender people and protections for transgender students, implemented a ban on transgender people in the military, and proposed a rule that allows broad religious exemptions for businesses with federal contracts.

I look forward to seeing this and agree with the sponsors’ intent. This was Think Progress’ most recent political article, dated 9/5.  RESIST!!

It’s a cooler rainy day here at the CatBox.  I’m running late, because I overslept.  Please expect no more than a Personal Update from me on both tomorrow and Monday.  Tomorrow is a WWWendy day, and we have lots of chores.  Monday, I have an appointment with Megan, my PCP for her to decide whether she wants to try medicine for my hiatal hernia or refer me to a surgeon.  Tomorrow is also a holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  My Broncos don’t play until Monday Night, so tomorrow, may the Orb shine its divine light on your team.

From Daily Kos: I wasn’t sure whether this was general knowledge or not, but for those of us who have relied on its outstanding reporting over the past 15 years, it’s a pretty big deal.

The progressive site ThinkProgress shut down on Friday in yet another sign of how much the news media landscape has changed in the past decade.

***

“We are very sad to announce that after more than two months of searching, we have been unable to identify a new publisher for ThinkProgress, and we are left with no choice but to close ThinkProgress as an independent enterprise focused on original reporting,” the statement said.

The founder of ThinkProgress is Judd Legum, who started the site in 2005.  The Center for American Progress, the site’s parent ”think tank,” put the site up for sale in July of this year. As no buyer for the site has been found, the site will shut down, presumably tonight, as reported.

It’s a sad day for journalism from a progressive perspective. RESIST!!

“After wrestling with my conscience for some time, I have concluded that any further association with Mr. Johnson would be damaging to my reputation,” the dog said.

Everyday Erinyes #182

Posted by at 8:08 am  Politics
Sep 072019

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

Chauncey DeVega is by his own description an essayist and cultural critic. He has a blog (and a podcast) of his own. He is a staff writer for Salon magazine, and therefore also appears fairly regularly at Raw Story and AlterNet, as well as other sites which reference Salon. He is also a trusted community member of Daily Kos. I have come to expect powerful writing when I see his name, so when I saw it attached to the title Cruelty is Trump’s guiding principle — but Democrats can use it to defeat him, I was interested. Nameless and I have independently come to the conclusion that, for Republicans, Cruelty Is The Point (and maybe you have too.)

Interestingly, I was challenged on that point this week, by a Disqus user who replied to one of my comments at Raw Story with “Domination is the point. Cruelty is just a perk.” Well, maybe. It’s also possible that cruelty is the point and domination is just the means. I’m not sure the distinction greatly matters, or whether it is even possible to unravel – and it probably differs slightly from Republican to Republican anyway. What is clear is that Republican cruelty is a recognized fact.

DeVega’s article was in response to the threat to deport any non-citizen who is in the United States specifically as a recipient of health care. This category includes many children, and many of those with fatal diseases/conditions, who will quite literally die quickly if forced to leave the United States. For all that is wrong with our health care, it does include access to techniques, procedures, drugs, and just a lot of possibilities which are not available in other nations, and particularly not to the nations to which these children are likely to be deported. Removing then from United States healthcare thus means removing them from any health care at all, and they will quickly die.

Not every child (or adult) who is here to receive health care is here solely for the benefit of the patient, either. A substantial chunk of these patients are here because the doctors desperately want to be able to work with them, treat them, and learn through them, how better to treat the diseases/conditions from which they suffer, with the ultimate goal of saving many thousands of lives. That dream too is destroyed by the deportation process. So – why? Why do this?

Because of public outrage at the wanton cruelty of sending sick people — including many children — back to their home countries to die, USCIS announced a temporary pause in the deportations….

This should be no comfort for the people who are in the United States under the “deferred action” program. Moreover, the safe and reasonable assumption should be that the Trump regime will resume its efforts to deport immigrants receiving lifesaving medical care once the controversy and resulting public and media attention subsides. This is part of the Trump regime’s fascist strategy of creating controversy through its “shocking” and “surprising” assaults on democracy, the rule of law and human decency. Predictably, the public and news media react to the outrage of the day, week or month. In response, the administration then appears to back down.

Testing the limits of societal norms is one of the primary ways through which fascists and other authoritarians break a democracy and in so doing train the public into a state of constant distraction, exhaustion and learned helplessness. (emphasis mine)

As a sidebar here, cruelty to others, and notably to the sick and injured, is not a phenomenon limited to non-citizens, or children, or brown people. You may have missed the story that Fox News Ed Henry (and the fact that Fox employs an individual with enough human feeling to do this points up the tightness of the job market that he would choose to stay employed there) recently underwent surgery to donate part of his liver to his ailing sister.

Mr. Henry has recovered enough to be able to make an appearance on Fox and Friends to discuss the experience, but he still has an incision several inches long in his chest which has not healed. He came to the studio the night before his scheduled appearance to greet colleagues, including Hannity’s staff.

He said on the show the next morning, “You won’t believe what happened.”

One of Hannity’s staffers guessed exactly what their boss had done.

“One of them said, Kristin, she said, ‘He punched you,’” Henry said, as co-host Steve Doocy grinned and Ainsley Earhardt covered her mouth and smiled. “I said yeah, because Sean does that.”

“You’ve been Hannitized!” Doocy said.

Henry laughed, and admitted the punch nearly knocked him over.

I also find it noteworthy that it was not just Henry who laughed – the Fox and Friends hosts found the story amusing to the point of laughter.

But this blatant cruelty to people considered “lesser” – be they brown or just paid a little less – hurts far more people than just the immediate, obvious victims. Back to DeVega:

Donald Trump and his policies are literally making the American people sick. Mental health professionals and other researchers have shown that the Age of Trump is a public health crisis characterized by high rates of anxiety, sleep disorders, stress and a generalized sense of fear and worry, as well as the other negative health outcomes (heart attacks and strokes; an increase in interpersonal violence such as mass shootings) that accompany such a diminished state of well-being.

In July of this year the Washington Post reported that “a Gallup poll recently documented an increase of stress, anger and worry among all Americans, which match or top the highest levels since it began tracking these negative feelings in 2006. Those who disapprove of Trump’s performance were significantly more likely to experience each of those negative emotions, the survey found.”

DeVega goes on to discuss possible ways in which Democrats might stress the cruelty of Trump, his regime, and Republicans in general on order to maximize Democratic wins in government now and in 2020 (and for as long as we have to.) I consider that not only a legitimate strategy, but also a moral imperative (as does DeVega:)

Whoever the Democrats nominate to run in 2020, the party faces a great task. It must force a moral reckoning in America in order to defeat Donald Trump.

But I am not going to filter his specific strategy ideas through my own head here – because I firmly believe that everyone has his or her own style, and that something that works for one candidate may very well not work for another.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, please encourage anyone who is working any election in any capacity, from the actual candidates down to the lowliest envelope-stuffer (if such exist any more), to read Chauncey DeVega’s article, especially the part about how to use the deliberate, wanton cruelty to good effect, and learn from it what they need to succeed. It sounds easy, doesn’t it? But sometimes it’s harder to get people to read and think than it is to get them to arm and fire.

The Furies and I will be back.

Maddow on Trump and Putin

0906putin-phobic

When Vladimir Putin [R-RU] invaded Ukraine and annexed the Crimea, US leaders objected strenuously and set up four columns of response that were fully bipartisan.  They are sanctions, removal of Russia from the G8, military aid to Ukraine, and support for NATO.  Resident Donald Trump, Fuhrer of the Republican Reich, and Putin’s Pervert Puppet is trying to dismantle all four pillars.  I found articles that touched on parts of this, bit only Rachel Maddow put it all together.  In addition, she discussed Putin’s nuclear irresponsibility.  Here are both videos.

Trump Dismantling US Response To Russian Annexation Of Crimea

President Donald Trump Coddling Putin Hampers NATO As Russia Oversteps

There can be no doubt that Trump’s Fuhrer is as evil, bellicose, reckless, and almost half as incompetent as he is.

From YouTube (MSNBC Channel): Team Trump Rolls Out Attacks On 2020 Dems After Town Hall On Climate Change

I saw a few minutes of that, and I bet the Republican Reich is exaggerating. RESIST!!

From Politico: Four states are poised to cancel their 2020 GOP presidential primaries and caucuses, a move that would cut off oxygen to Donald Trump’s long-shot primary challengers.

Republican parties in South Carolina, Nevada, Arizona and Kansas are expected to finalize the cancellations in meetings this weekend, according to three GOP officials who are familiar with the plans.

The moves are the latest illustration of Trump’s takeover of the entire Republican Party apparatus. They underscore the extent to which his allies are determined to snuff out any potential nuisance en route to his renomination — or even to deny Republican critics a platform to embarrass him.

Heil Fuhrer!! RESIST!!

From Alternet: When well-known former Republicans start goading Mitch McConnell with the moniker that clearly has him enraged, you know Moscow Mitch’s cover is blown. For years he’s been able to keep sliding under the radar, undermining the Senate, flouting the norms and traditions that kept the institution a functioning body, while the wider world paid little attention.

But that’s changed. His enthusiastic enabling of this worst, most dangerous president is one thing that’s breaking his protective shell. So is his refusal to protect the nation from enemy interference in our elections. But his disregard for human life is the last straw for a lot of people. That includes well-known former Republicans like David Weissman, who used to support McConnell, as well as Trump. In an open letter to Moscow Mitch published Wednesday in The Times of Israel, Weissman told him “if you don’t like this nickname, do your job.”

“You are failing the people that elected you to act as Senator, but instead you act as [a] Russian puppet,” Weissman wrote. “You have also blocked bipartisan bills that would protect elections in our country. This gives Russia more opportunities to interfere in our elections.” He writes to McConnell that he is “single-handedly putting our democracy at risk,” and “This is why the people are calling you Moscow Mitch.”

Well, at least in Trump’s hand it is.

Here’s Trump’s original mistaken Tweet including Alabama in Hurricane Dorian’s path:

And in 20 minutes, the National Weather Service issues a Tweet correcting Trump – Alabama will NOT be hammered by Dorian

Here’s the official White House photo of Trump being briefed WRT Dorians path on August 29th:

But on Wednesday, unable to ever admit a mistake, Trump embellishes the map to include Alabama … by drawing it in with a Sharpie!

And thus “Sharpiegate” was born!

Well, of course, the Twitterverse was not going to miss this golden opportunity to mercilessly mock Trump’s mental illness. As you could imagine, a popular theme was getting his “Wall” finished …

And correcting the “fake news” error of not accurately reporting his HUGE Inauguration crowd size – his is much bigger than Obama’s …

And staying with the Inaugural theme, Trump released a photo showing how much Melania truthfully enjoyed it …

And to prove that he’s actually taller than Pres. Obama

When it comes to his mental prowess, the release of Trump’s brain scan should remove any doubts …

Buttressed by release of Trump’s official High School Report Card …

Still not convinced? Well, the list of the “13 Most Intelligent People In The History Of The World” should do the trick

And you know how all those Libtards are forever whining about the amount of time Trump golfs – but just look what it’s done for his physique!

And he’s really improved his game …

But his sports prowess isn’t limited to just golf – take a look at all the bullseyes he got:

Being the great family man, you can see how he enjoys taking Barron and the grandkids with him on his golf outings …

In fact he’s such a family man he deserves being named of the “Father of the Year”. Why, just look at this recent family portrait:

And about all those rumors of him being best buds with Jeffrey Epstein and sharing common … hmmm … interests and pursuits? Well, they are just that – RUMORS. He never met him!

In fact, Trump being a man of impeccable moral rectitude, a genius and the best president America has ever had (just ask him), he’s already planning on having his bust added to Mount Rushmore:

In closing, while we’ve all enjoyed yet another humorous display of his mental illness (you just gotta laugh if you want to stay sane) …

We would be derelict to not inform Trump that it’s ILLEGAL to knowingly issue a counterfeit weather report or warning

But I think the best use of a Sharpie is to spread this message far and wide:

Benedict Trump

The last traitor to steal from West Point was Benedict Arnold [R-PA]. His intent was to sabotage the fort, turn over to the British, and help then win the Revolutionary War.  He failed.  West Point became the US Military Academy, the institution that trains virtually all our important Army generals.  Now, another Republican Traitor, Donald Trump, is stealing from West Point.  That sabotages the military education of future Army Generals.  Republicans may argue, that it’s only $160 million. but Benedict Trump is stealing $3.6 billion from and sabotaging our military everywhere.

0905TrumpBenedict

The Pentagon plans to divert funds from military construction projects in nearly half the 50 states, three territories and 19 countries to the southwestern border wall as part of President Trump’s efforts to bypass Congress and redirect spending to his signature campaign promise.

Nearly every facet of military life, from a canceled dining center in Puerto Rico to a small arms firing range in Tulsa, Okla., to an elementary school in Wiesbaden, Germany, will be affected by the transfer of $3.6 billion in congressionally appropriated funds detailed by the Defense Department on Wednesday.

The cuts involve projects such as rifle ranges, aircraft simulators, hangars, port repairs and a cyberoperations center in Virginia, with the biggest impact in Puerto Rico, Guam, New York and New Mexico. In the case of Puerto Rico, the Defense Department plans to divert funds from projects targeted after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017.

The $3.6 billion, taken from 127 projects across the globe, will go toward 11 projects in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, which include both new construction and some fencing replacement. The longest stretch of new pedestrian fencing — about 52 miles — is scheduled for Laredo, Tex., along the Rio Grande.

Reacting to the Pentagon’s announcement, Democrats assailed what they said was an assault on military readiness and lawmakers from both parties voiced discomfort with what they called an attempt by the White House to subvert their constitutional mandate to set government spending… [emphasis added]
