From NY Times: United States Special Operations commandos carried out a risky raid in northwestern Syria on Saturday against a senior terrorist leader there, two senior administration officials said late Saturday.

A senior American official said commandos and analysts were still seeking to confirm the identity of the terrorist, who the officials said was killed in the operation when he exploded his suicide vest.

But a person close to President Trump and a senior American official said that the target of the raid was believed to be the leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. A senior administration official said that the president had approved the mission.

With Trump in charge, it will be al-Baghdadi, whether it is or not. No doubt he will attribute the success to his own superiority and claim that the intelligence for the location is a byproduct of his brilliant plan to withdraw US troops from protecting the Kurds. For the record, the military has been watching that location closely since September, and the intelligence came from our former allies, the Kurds. It had nothing to do with Trump. RESIST!!

It’s that time of week again, so here are three excellent video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!

Monologue: Mad King Trump

That was a superior job of lampooning Trump. Bill should not be surprised about Katie Hill [D-CA]. She’s from California, where smoking a bong is fairly common.

Chris Cuomo

I understand him. At one time I was an independent moderate, but the independent moderate of 1980 is today’s leftist radical. I didn’t change much at all. The nation’s entire political spectrum moved disastrously to the right, between then and now.

New Rule: Nowhere Else to Go

We actually have a bunch of parties, not just two.  Lefties, all too commonly, stick their noses in the air over their foolish perception of purity and vote for minor parties that have no chance. Were it not for Putin Puppet Jill Stein, Hillary would have won the three states she needed. In practical reality, there are two choices, and any minor party vote is a vote for Trump. Vote Blue, no matter who!

That show was better than average!

I’m feeling a bit better, here in the CatBox, but I’m still quite tired, so I’ll be brief.  Tomorrow is a holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  My Broncos are meditating with the Colts, but it won’t be televised here.  I fear my full grown horses may be too long in the tooth to keep up with the kids.  May the Divine Orb shine its blessing light on your team, unless they are equine juveniles.  WWWendy also comes tomorrow to destink the foul TomCat and help with chores.  We have lots to do, so please expect no more than a Personal Update tomorrow.

Short Takes:

From NY Times: A federal judge handed a victory to House Democrats on Friday when she ruled that they were legally engaged in an impeachment inquiry, a decision that undercut President Trump’s arguments that the investigation is a sham.

The declaration came in a 75-page opinion by Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell of the Federal District Court in Washington. She ruled that the House Judiciary Committee was entitled to view secret grand jury evidence gathered by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.

Typically, Congress has no right to view such evidence. But in 1974, the courts permitted lawmakers to see such materials as they weighed whether to impeach President Richard M. Nixon. The House is now immersed in the same process focused on Mr. Trump, Judge Howell ruled, and that easily outweighs any need to keep the information secret from lawmakers.

Wonderful!  However, I have no doubt that Barrf will appeal this to the District Court of Appeals in DC, and upon losing there, to SCROTUS (Republican anti-Constitutional VD). This decision invalidates the entire noncooperation policy of the Republican Reich, but don’t expect any documents anytime soon. RESIST!!

Everyday Erinyes #189

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage. These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that. As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

In looking around for something to share with the Furies, I was mostly – well, pretty well exclusive,y – finding articles that are unrelated to current events and just “interesting.” Not a bad thing, of course, especially now. And this is one of them. But this one stood out as requesting action which maybe someone could take if you’ve ever spent any part of an autumn in New England. Bet you never thought any autumn leaf tour photos could some day be useful.

Leaf peep for science – I want your old photos of fall foliage

What can your vacation pix tell scientists?

Stephanie Spera, University of Richmond

Every October, when I was growing up in Massachusetts, my parents would check out the fall foliage reports and determine where we were going to drive to see the colorful leaves. And they still do. In New England, leaf peeping, as it’s called, is a billion dollar industry and millions of people travel to the region during foliage season.

In Maine’s Acadia National Park, visitation has more than doubled in September and October since the early 1990s. Tourists book leaf peeping cruises, bus trips and lodging packages, all scheduled to coincide with what’s traditionally been the somewhat predictable fall foliage season.

But Earth’s climate is changing. A big question is how climate change’s impacts on the timing, duration and vibrancy of fall foliage will affect the tourist season.

Pulling together all kinds of data

Untangling the relationship between climate, fall foliage and visitorship in Acadia National Park – the goal of my research – requires a variety of data, including meteorological observations, park visitor surveys and knowledge of when fall foliage starts, peaks and ends every year.

As an environmental scientist, one of the primary ways I study changes in vegetation phenology – that is, the timing of biological events like flowering, leaf out, or onset and duration of fall foliage – is through the use of satellite data. Every day, dozens of satellites circle the Earth collecting data on everything from land cover to weather to sea surface temperatures to ground water to the chemical composition of the atmosphere.

These data are crucial in teasing apart environmental changes. Scientists have used satellite data of land cover and vegetation to show that as global temperatures increase, trees are flowering earlier and earlier.

But like all technology, the farther back in time you go, the lower the quality of the data. Even worse, there isn’t any reliable satellite data over Acadia National Park before the year 2000 at all. So my team needs to get creative.

Science behind the seasonal display

Here’s what biologists do know. As summer turns to autumn, the days get shorter and colder, both of which are signals to trees to stop photosynthesizing and producing the chlorophyll that makes their leaves green. With green chlorophyll out of the picture, the orange and yellow carotenoid pigments in the leaves that are masked by all the chlorophyll production all summer have their moment to shine.

In some trees, cooler weather cues the production of a chemical called anthocyanin, which helps trees pull the nutrients from their leaves into their trunk and roots. Anthocyanin is responsible for those gorgeous red and purple leaves on trees like red maples and dogwoods.

While every tree is different, studies have found that earlier spring bud burst, warmer temperatures and a dry fall are linked to a later fall foliage season. A shorter foliage season can result from a hot summer and wet fall. Additionally, the concentration of nitrogen in the atmosphere – which humans are releasing into the atmosphere on faster time scales than nature does – affects just how red those gorgeous maples get.

The northeastern U.S. has gotten warmer and wetter over the last century. How have these climate changes affected the timing, vibrancy and duration of fall foliage in Acadia National Park? Have tourists, in turn, changed how and when they visit the park?

Looking in new places for old foliage records

To answer this question, my team is using historical data on temperature and precipitation in Acadia National Park. What we’re missing, though, is information about when fall foliage has started and peaked, going back through the decades.

Most historical records of phenology, like those of Henry David Thoreau, are focused on the spring season. Historical documentation of fall foliage is harder to come by.

My colleagues and I are mining National Park reports and old newspapers, like this article in the Oct. 12, 1893 Bar Harbor Times, which is local to Acadia National Park:

“The autumn foliage on Mount Desert was never more brilliant than this year. The hills are ablaze with crimson and yellow, and the woodbine embowered cottages are resplendent with opalescent tints. But, alas ‘tis but the beetie glow in the consumptive’s cheek. A few weeks and winter’s white pail will cover all the autumn glories.”

But the records are few and far between.

We’ve found one continuous record of fall foliage since 1975, although it’s not focused on the Acadia area. Polly’s Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire has been collecting data on onset and peak of fall foliage since the mid-1970s. Interestingly, their data show that since 1975 fall foliage gets going earlier in the year, but peak fall foliage occurs later.

Maybe you have the selfies we seek

This lack of data is why we need citizen scientists to help us fill in the gaps.

With apps and programs like Nature’s Notebook, iNaturalist, BudBurst and eBird, it’s never been easier for anyone to share their observations of the world around them. Scientists have recently been trawling social media sites like Twitter, Flickr and Instagram for data to estimate park visitation rates, map monarch butterfly and snowy owl sightings and understand the various ways people value different landscapes.

Collecting photos from people who’ve traveled to Acadia is helping us validate the satellite data we do have. My team is able to make sure what we see in the satellite images actually represents of what is happening on the ground in the park. We are so appreciative of all the photos we’ve received from people who have visited Acadia this year. And we have received a bunch, 907 to be exact, of submitted photos from the post-cellphone camera era.

That doesn’t get us back to before the advent of continuous satellite data, though. We need leaf peepers to dig deeper into their personal photo albums to help us figure out the timing of fall foliage before the year 2000.

Those earlier photos – from a time of yore when you actually had to remove film from a camera and take it to get developed – are proving much harder to come by. So far we have two data points from before 2010, one from 1987 and one from 1981.

We’re asking for your help. We know those awkward family photos of you or your parents in their 1970s bell bottoms standing in front of Acadia’s Jordan Pond exist. And we want them. If you have any old vacation photos taken in the park during the fall, scan them and send them our way.

Understanding the relationships between climate change, fall foliage and park visitorship have important implications for park management, the local economies of towns on and around Mount Desert Island, and those of us who love visiting Acadia in the fall. So leaf peep – for science.

I’m afraid I’m no help. I have autumn pictures back to the eighties, but they’re all in Colorado. But I certainly will be sure to hang on to them now, in case someone here decides to so a similar study. We do have a dependency on tourists here, certainly.

Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone, I don’t see how it could hurt to inspire people in other areas of the nation, and the world, to look into something similar It could even really help.

Today’s article is for Congress Critters who think Captain Kangaroo presided over Kangaroo Courts

(SPOILER ALERT: He didn’t.)

Just two short weeks ago we witnessed a display of breathtaking stupidity by republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (objecting to Chairman’s Schiff impeachment inquiry) to such a degree that it now makes us wonder if Louie Gohmert is truly the dumbest person to serve in Congress.

(Note to Louie: Matt Gaetz is doing a great “Here – old my beer” rendition.)

Now most of us, if we’ve even heard about Gaetz at all, it would be because of his history of generating mugshots for DUI and speeding ticket arrests.

But two weeks ago he joined forces with Rep. “Gym” Jordan to reveal that he believes the term “Kangaroo Court” originated from the beloved children’s TV show, Captain Kangaroo.

Many of us Baby Boomers and some early Gen Xers can fondly recall Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans from our childhood days.  Bob Keeshan, who created his TV show (which aired from 1955 to 1984), was a kind and gentle soul.  And although he was a Marine during World War II, he was neither a Captain nor a Kangaroo nor even an Australian.  He originally hails from Queens, NY – Trump’s home borough growing up.

Captain Kangaroo gave himself that moniker because of his jacket’s huge pockets that held wonderful surprises – like a kangaroo’s pouch.

Whereas “Kangaroo Court” is a phrase referring to a biased tribunal that ignores due process; or an unauthorized trial by folks who have decided to take the law into their own hands; or a hasty judicial action that proceeds rapidly in leaps and bounds (like a kangaroo) to a foregone conclusion.

But it’s not surprising that Gaetz would believe that Captain Kangaroo presides over his eponymous court.  After all, Gaetz is everything Trump would want in a lap dog: loud, loyal, looney and happy to debase himself espousing talking points that a fifth grader would realize are too outlandish to believe.  Fortunately for Trump, Gaetz is that profoundly dumb.

Some folks believe that the phrase “Kangaroo Court” can be traced back to the 1849 California Gold Rush.  There was a large influx of Australians hoping to make their fortunes there since it was easier to get to California by sea than to travel across our broad country from the east coast.  Illegal prospecting was not looked on kindly and those “claim jumpers” were sternly dealt with by “kangaroo courts”. (Get it?)

Likewise, the innertubes decided to sternly deal with Gaetz’s stupidity.  Some folks were merciless in mocking Gaetz’s stupidity:

But Matt Blaze was kind enough to help Gaetz out filling him in on Captain Kangaroo’s TV show:

(It was noted by some wag that Corporal Punishment was a frequent guest on the Captain’s show.)

Someone provided a photo of Captain Kangaroo brazenly stuffing the Ballot Box right in front of Walter Cronkite.

Another pundit wondered how familiar Gaetz was with other children’s TV shows from that era.  (I know, I know – your reaction to that first photo is right below “Sweet …)

It’s interesting that before inventing Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keeshan played Clarabell the Clown on The Howdy Doody Show – which is the perfect segue for Bette Midler’s zinger:

Given Gaetz’s level of intellectual acumen, it’s fair to conclude that he undoubtedly thinks chocolate milk comes from brown cows. (Nothing gets by that man.)

Why, if you could combine Gaetz’s intelligence along with Gohmert, King, Nunes and Jordan you might get an IQ of 75.  But only if you spot them 50 points.  It’s amazing he remembers to breath on a daily basis.

And so we bid a fond adieu to “Gym” and Matt doing their best Captain and Mr. Green Jeans imitation – and thanking them for providing yet another episode of republican entertainment.  (At least they’re good for something.)

Lindsey Poo Blew It

Posted by at 10:13 am  Politics
Oct 252019

You have to look a long, long way to find a more hypocritical and disingenuous Senator than Lindsey Graham [R-SC], aka Lindsey Poo.  Lindsey Poo blew it!  How?  Well, he has introduced a resolution condemning House Democrats for keeping the impeachment inquiry hearings secret.  Not only did he fail to mention that all the Republicans on the investigating committees may take part, but also, he buried his foot in his mouth even deeper than his nose is buried in Trump’s sphincter.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) held a news conference Thursday at which he announced a resolution condemning the House impeachment inquiry, as partisan rancor continued to escalate over the Ukraine scandal.

After two dramatic days of closed-door depositions, House investigators are hitting the pause button in honor of the late congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), the former House Oversight and Reform Committee chairman who will be lying in state in the Capitol for public viewing until 7 p.m..

But debate over the fairness of the inquiry is continuing unabated, with Trump praising House Republicans for storming a secure room where depositions are being held and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) accusing GOP lawmakers of “covering up” for a president abusing his power.

Democrats, meanwhile, are looking to make the proceedings public by mid-November as they build a case about Trump pressing Ukraine to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden while U.S. military aid to the country was being withheld…. [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Washington Post>

Here’s the rest of the story.  Those secretive rules, to which Lindsey Poo and the Republican Reich object so strenuously, did not come from Democrats.  Democrats are faithfully obeying the same same rules Republicans established in 2015. Those rules came from former Speaker John “Agent Orange” Boehner.  Perhaps Lindsey Poo should condemn him, instead.

From Washington Post: Let me make an admittedly tentative suggestion about the explosive news that William P. Barr’s review of the origins of the Russia investigation has become a criminal probe:…

…No question, it’s deeply worrying that the Attorney General’s review — which President Trump badly wants in hopes of discrediting the origins of the special counsel investigation that revealed bottomless corruption on his part — now appears to be a criminal matter.

The Post and the New York Times both cite sources who confirm this, noting that this gives John Durham, the U.S. attorney from Connecticut who’s running the review with Barr, additional investigative powers.

Let’s also stipulate upfront that when we’re talking about Barr, the most nefarious designs imaginable must be treated as a serious possibility. Barr appears willing to manipulate the U.S. law enforcement machinery to an extraordinary degree to protect Trump from accountability and to propagandize away Trump’s corruption and likely criminality.
