I’m writing for tomorrow, day 120.  My COPD is still severe, and I have pain in my lower back.  I’m hoping against hope that it isn’t another kidney stone.  Just in case, I’m super-hydrating.  (That worked)

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:01 (average 4:24).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: Last week’s indictment of Texas Governor Rick Perry has sparked widespread bipartisan support for the concept of sending politicians to prison for ninety-nine years.

While Americans are divided about the merits of the specific charges levelled against Perry, there is near-unanimous agreement that imprisoning politicians for ninety-nine years is an idea worth exploring further, a poll released on Monday indicates.

According to the poll, eighty-seven per cent of voters from both parties agreed that sending politicians to prison for such a lengthy period would “solve a lot of problems” and “make the country safer.”

LOL Andy. Welcome back! I frequently tell my guys in prison that they made a bad career choice, when the did not opt to be elected criminals, as opposed to convicted ones.

From Vox: Missouri Governor Jay Nixon on Monday ordered the state’s National Guard to Ferguson to help contain rising tensions and violence over the shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown.

The announcement came after the St. Louis suburb endured another night of violence as several agitators, whom Brown’s family and other protest leaders condemned, engaged in shootings, hurled Molotov cocktails, and vandalized various businesses. Security officials reported at least three injuries, although none were police officers.

"These violent acts are a disservice to the family of Michael Brown and his memory"

"Tonight, a day of hope, prayers, and peaceful protests was marred by the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state, whose actions are putting the residents and businesses of Ferguson at risk," Nixon said in a statement. "These violent acts are a disservice to the family of Michael Brown and his memory, and to the people of this community who yearn for justice to be served, and to feel safe in their own homes."

A lot of people don’t realize what’s really going on here. We are dealing with two distinct groups. First there are protestors. They are essentially peaceful, and we were moving rapidly toward a resolution, thanks to State Police Captain Ron Johnson, until they were enraged by incendiary statements from the Ferguson Police Chief and the St. Louis County DA, who sabotaged an improving situation. I think that was intentional, and intended to provoke violence to distract from the criminal behavior by police.  The protestors are so angry that they refuse to disband. Second, there are the looters and anarchists. Virtually all of them are not local. They do not care about the issues the demonstrators care about. They are there to commit crimes. I only hope that the National Guard will respond to each group separately and appropriately. My own experience with the Guard in the 1960s has stained the streets of several Eastern and Midwest cities with my blood, as I demonstrated peacefully, so my hope is not high.

From Right Wing Watch: This, weekend Christian Post blogger Michael Bresciani pointed out [pseudo-Christian delinked] the real culprit for terrorist attacks: gay people.

Bresciani writes that LGBT “perversion” is bringing the world “in danger of judgment” and, in fact, “these judgments have already begun and terrorism is part of it.”

Bresciani adds that evolution and the separation of church and state, which he claims is the invention of Satan, are also responsible for inciting divine punishment.

Simply put, this Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christian is claiming that God is punishing us all, because we don’t hate gay people, believe pseudo-science and allow the unconstitutional choice of Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christianity as the state religion.

I’m writing for tomorrow, day 118.  The Fantasy Football draft made it a busy day.  The TC Broncos are built around Manning, Ball and Welker, so I like the team I put together.  However I’ve been running late ever since, and my COPD has been active today and prevented sleep.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:26 (average 4:40).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: James O. Pasco Jr., the executive director of the Fraternal Order of Police, didn’t much care for what President Obama had to say Thursday about racist police behavior in Ferguson, Missouri. Not that the president said it was racist. Here’s Mario Trujillo reporting:

"I would contend that discussing police tactics from Martha’s Vineyard is not helpful to ultimately calming the situation," director Jim Pasco said in an interview with The Hill.

"I think what he has to do as president and as a constitutional lawyer is remember that there is a process in the United States and the process is being followed, for good or for ill, by the police and by the county and by the city and by the prosecutors’ office," Pasco added. […]

"I’m not there, and neither is the president," Pasco said. "That is why we have due process in the United States. And this will all be sorted out over time. But right now, I haven’t seen anything from afar — and maybe the president has — that would lead me to believe the police are doing anything except to restore order."

What this Republican pig (individual description, not indicative of all police) fails to realize is that when the due process of which he speaks is subverted by those responsible for guaranteeing it, intervention is needed.

From Think Progress: At a political debate on Thursday night, a GOP candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives left the room laughing after he struggled to answer a question on his position on reproductive rights. Rep. Mike Coffman (R), who’s running for re-election in Colorado’s 6th congressional district, needed help from the crowd to remember what “birth control” is called.

I only hope that, for the sake of the gene pool, his wife either used birth control throughout their married life, or had her children by a brighter bulb.

From Right Wing Watch: David Brody has been teasing out clips of an interview he did this week with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and his wife, Judy. At one point in the interview, she played into the Religious Right’s persecution narrative by claiming that Christians like herself are losing their freedom of religion.

Small Barf Bag Alert!  A pocket or a shoe will do.

Her whining is a flat out lie. Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians hit opposition, when they attempt to impose their beliefs and/or piety codes on people who do not share them. I never face harassment for being a Christian, because I respect and honor others’ beliefs.  Another problems with Republicans is that they disguise their political agenda as religion. I don’t remember Jesus ever suggesting that we take from the poor to give to the rich.

I was expecting some rather strange behavior from Republicans, as they look for ways to undermine Obama’s foreign policy in Iraq.  After all, they do sedition so well.  However, it came as a complete shock to me that a prominent Republican evangelist would so so far as to agree with ISIS that people Obama is trying to protect are worthy of extermination!

0810Fischer

I’m not sure if there are enough ways to call Bryan Fischer insane, but his own words might suffice.

My thesaurus is wearing thin on adjectives to describe hate-filled pseudo-Christians like Bryan Fischer, but my aggravation is going full-tilt over the fact that he makes these statements on the taxpayers’ dime.

Isn’t there a time where we start to say that free speech is fine, but taxpayers are under no obligation to forego American Family Association’s tax payments in the name of Jesus? [not the real Jesus]… [emphasis original]

Major Barf Bag Alert!!

When you come down to it, the only difference between Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians like Fischer and Republican Supply-side pseudo-Muslims like ISIS is the religion they are abusing.

Furthermore, Fischer is flat-out lying.  Just like ISIS is persecuting Yazidis, they are also persecuting Chaldean Christians.  The Yazidi refugees fled to Mount Sinjar.  Thousands of Christian refugees fled to Erbil, where Kurdish Muslims are harboring and protecting them.  They are one of the refugee groups in that city that Obama is protecting with airstrikes.  Despite Fischer’s fraudulent claim, Obama is lifting far more than just a finger to protect Christians.

In case your wondering why this lying Republican didn’t get a Parade for this, it’s because he has already had one.

I’m writing for tomorrow, day 106.  It’s been a busy day.  I cleaned up a three day mess.  It was huge,  I got a haircut.  It was hot, but the barber shop is only three blocks away,  I had a big bowl of Gehenna chili.  You know, when someone in the surrounding area lights a match, the fireball can be quite dramatic.  And, of course, I researched.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:10 (average 4:46).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: I’ll keep the commentary low, because the event speaks for itself. So much for the religious tradition the Republican party prides itself on and uses as the basis to deny so many rights. A recent bill introduced in the house suggests a resolution honoring the Pope "for his inspirational statements and actions" as well as his goals to ameliorate inequality and promote solidarity.

What do the Republicans think about this? According to reports from The Hill, it looks like they aren’t too happy.

Only 19 of the 221 co-sponsors are Republicans. The dearth of GOP members on the measure could be attributable to assertions that the pope is “too liberal,” according to a Republican backer of the legislation.

The source noted that Francis last year denounced “trickle-down economics.”

Some Republicans believe the pope is “sounding like [President] Obama. [The pope] talks about equality — he actually used the term ‘trickle-down economics,’ which is politically charged,” the GOP official said.

There is a simple enough explanation for why the Pope sounds so like Obama to Republicans that they object. Pope Francis and Obama are both Christians. Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians are NOT Christians.

From NY Times: The nation’s largest environmental group is earning money from an oil well on land it controls in Texas, despite pledging a decade ago not to permit new oil and gas drilling on land supposedly set aside for conservation.

That revelation is contained in a forthcoming book about climate change by the writer and activist Naomi Klein, and the essential facts of the case were confirmed last week by the Nature Conservancy, the environmental group in question.

The Nature Conservancy — which says it helps protect about 20 million acres in the United States — argues that it has had no choice in the case of the well. Under the terms of a lease it signed years ago with an oil and gas company and later came to regret, the group says it had to permit the drilling of the well in 2007.

But the lease contains termination clauses, and Ms. Klein argues in the book that the Nature Conservancy could most likely have stopped the 2007 drilling. The group has earned millions of dollars over the years from gas and oil production on the property, though the 2007 well was not especially lucrative.

Unless there is more about this issue that I do not know, I would suggest that there are better environmental groups to support than they are.

From TPM: An Evanston, Ill. man fatally shot himself Sunday night while showing off a shotgun he thought wasn’t loaded to a group of friends, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Police were called to an Evanston home for an accidental shooting. They found Eric Zyzanski on the floor with a shotgun wound to the head, lying next to the shotgun.

He was taken to the hospital and died about two hours later, according to police.

According to witnesses, Zyzanski was in his apartment with friends, where he took out a shotgun and "began showing it off."

His friends told him to put the gun away, so he proceeded to take two or three rounds out of the gun, according to police. He then pointed the gun at his cheek, said the gun was empty and pulled the trigger, witnesses said.

Bye Bye Gunny Boo Boo!! Any needless loss of life is tragic and regrettable, but at least that Republican Ammosexual won’t be voting in November.

I’m writing for tomorrow, day 102.  It will be a difficult day, because I have physical therapy during a heat wave.  It is also the day I normally spend hours collecting the data for and compiling the Monthly Report for Politics Plus to post on the second.  Because of the timing, the Monthly Report will be a day or two late, and I may have nothing at all to post on Saturday.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:54 (average 4:32).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Upworthy: As much as people love sex, you’d think we’d know better! If we just got rid of myths like these, we’d feel a lot better about our bodies, our relationships, and our sex lives.

If you show this to Republicans, that are likely to become apoplectic. So many uninterrupted facts, without intervening lies is more than they can handle.  Now, if only I could remember what sex is.

From Daily Kos: If you haven’t seen this before, this really sums up what Republicans think of the Americans who work for a living.

0801Repub_takers

No Congress in US history has ever done so little.’

From TPM: Conservative rocker Ted Nugent published a lengthy and rambling rant hitting back at his critics on Wednesday, writing that the reason he’s been described as a racist is because he’s "doing God’s work."

Nugent’s comments came in a column posted [World Nut Daily delinked] on the conspiracy theory website WND, in which he reacted to the news that one of his concerts in Idaho had been canceled because of his incendiary rhetoric.

"For the lying freaks over at the Huffington Post, Moveon.org and the scammers at the Southern Poverty Law Center to go to such extremes to constantly lie about me is proof positive that I am not only on the right track doing God’s work spotlighting the current infestation of cockroaches amongst us, but that they are clearly scared to death of me and virtually incapable of debating me one on one," Nugent wrote.

Nugent was reported to have used the term "unclean vermin" when discussing the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s decision to cancel a casino concert he was supposed to perform. The tribe canceled the concert after being contacted by the Southern Poverty Law Center and made aware of some of his past remarks, including some in which he called President Obama a "subhuman mongrel" and a "chimpanzee."

From his perspective, spewing racial hatred is doing God’s work, because his God is Republican Supply-side Jesus, the exact opposite of the real Jesus.

Tax Dollars for a Myth

I fully support the First Amendment to the Constitution of the US, so I agree that an individual has the right to believe in a literal interpretation of the Old Testament, even though I do not.  However I do have a problem with public tax dollars being use to propagate Old Testament myths.  That is exactly what Kentucky Republicans are doing.

0731ArkA group that wants to build a Noah’s Ark theme park in Grant County [Pseudo-Christianity delinked] won preliminary approval Tuesday of state tax incentives of as much as $18.25 million to keep the controversial project afloat.

The Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority voted unanimously to give preliminary approval of the incentives for the $73 million first phase of the biblical theme park.

An independent consultant for the state will take six to eight weeks to review the project. It then will come back to the state panel for final consideration of tax incentives…

Every week, Republicans join a competition to see who can say the most outlandish things, and in the process, every week they push the envelope on just how deranged InsaniTEA can become.  I trust that you will believe it, when I tell you that last week was no exception.

Pastor Robert Jeffress is pretty sure Jesus would have built a fence to keep out those kids at the border.

People often ask themselves “What would Jesus do?” for guidance on issues both big and small. Sometimes they ask themselves whether Jesus would have salad or French fries on the side. Right-wing ideologues ask if Jesus prefers AK-47s or some other assault rifle.

One such holy man, Texas megachurch Pastor Robert Jeffress has prayed mightily to the lord and searched his own conscience to find a humane solution to the problem of unaccompanied minors from Central America coming across the border. That’s how much he cares. And he has concluded that what Jesus would do is suggest we build a fence. Maybe this is because Jesus was for a carpenter, and he wants more work.

But it is also because, as Pastor Jeffress told Fox News on Thursday, building a fence is the truly compassionate thing to do.

“What we are doing by having these unsecured borders is we are enticing children and mothers to make this dangerous journey,” the Christian leader said on Fox News this week. “The most compassionate thing we can do is secure the borders.”

Oh, so the whole serving the poor thing, washing their feet, feeding the multitudes and forgiving people their sins, those weren’t the most compassionate things?

No, not according to Pastor Jeffress, who has previously expressed the very compassionate view that President Obama is  preparing the U.S. for the Antichrist

I guess Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians (the exact opposite of authentic Christians) never heard of the Good Samaritan.  The real Jesus would NOT be building a fence.

Boycott Eden Foods!

Posted by at 12:02 am  Politics, Religion
Jul 092014

One of the things that make the Holly Lobby decision so frustrating is that there appeared to be little the left can do in the short term.  Boycotting Hobby Lobby is great, and I fully support all who do so, but in truth, shopping in one of their stores is something I would never have done anyway.  On the other hand, we can put a dent in the finances of Eden foods, because so many activists are also into organic foods.  They certainly deserve it.

0709Eden

Yesterday on my public Facebook page, I began following the story of Eden Foods (this is a good place to start), an organic food company whose products are beloved by many friends, especially my vegetarian and vegan friends (they make beans and soy milk, among other products).

In 2013, the company and their chairman and sole shareholder, Michael Potter, sued the federal government for the right to deny contraceptive coverage to their employees. Here’s the court filing.

The plaintiffs, Eden Foods, Inc., and Michael Potter, appeal from a denial of their request for a preliminary injunction that would forbid federal agencies from enforcing that mandate against them. They contend that offering such contraceptive services to the employees of Eden Foods would substantially burden the plaintiffs’€™ religious beliefs.

Potter refers to contraceptives as "lifestyle drugs. [pseudo-Christians delinked]" He has compared buying birth-control pills to Jack Daniels. He believes that "Obama’s in your bedroom" and that he a defender of freedom, and has also characterized Obama as a dictator. Moreover, he actually can’t identify which religious principle in particular leads him to object to providing birth control.

Two things interest me here. First, I have my doubts whether an organic food company can survive a boycott from progressives. Whole Foods has managed to be an anti-union corporation with CEO who likes to go on Obama-is-a-fascist rants (speaking as a historian, this is not what fascism looks like) and yet still thrive. I rarely shop there, but they seem to do alright, in part by providing the only option for high-quality insanely-expensive fancy foods in many area. Eden Foods has to compete with other, less offensive (in public anyway. EDIT: I assume few CEOs share my values), brands.

Second, I am always interested in the way that white wealthy Christians present themselves as victims (my public writing is coordinated under the general heading of "language, power, and privilege."). There is power in simultaneously claiming righteous might while also under assault by powerful and nefarious forces. It’s an old rhetorical move and remains widely spread among the American Christian right (see my CNN.com piece on Sarah Palin at the NRA). In response to the outrage at their position, Eden Foods has gone on the defensive-offense… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Daily Kos>

In a separate article, Daily Kos has a petition to the CEO of Eden Foods.  It threatens a boycott, so it’s certainly worth signing.  But this isn’t the first time this company has ventured into the arena of Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christian attempts to violated the rights of others to impose their own dogma.  I went to their own store locator and found six local businesses that carry their products.  I called them and have spoken with the managers of five.  One knew about this, and said the owners are making a decision on whether to stop selling Eden.  The other four did not even know about Eden’s involvement.  Two did not care, one said he would discuss the matter with the owners, and one was very angry that Eden would do such a thing.  She said that, if the owners would not pull Eden’s plug, she would advise her customers to choose different brands.

That’s what one tired old man can do.  Imagine what thousands of really pissed-off women could accomplish.
