I’m writing for tomorrow, and I shall post just this article, because my COPD interfered with my sleep last night. I plan to watch a lot of the Olympic coverage.  I have long been a fan of amateur sports, although I admit to frustration over the way pros have taken over some venues and even most “amateurs” are now pros.  Nevertheless, there will be lots of moments worth seeing, even though I expect those dang Canadians to kick our butts more often than not.

The Winter Storm Warning has been extended through tomorrow night.  Lots of places are colder and have more snow, but this is highly unusual here.

Short Takes:

From Mother Jones: There’s one main rule at the conservative donor conclaves held twice a year by Charles and David Koch at luxury resorts: What happens there stays there.

The billionaire industrialists and their political operatives strive to ensure the anonymity of the wealthy conservatives who fund their sprawling political operation—which funneled more than $400 million into the 2012 elections—and to keep their plans private. Attendees of these summits are warned that the seminars, where the Kochs and their allies hatch strategies for electing Republicans and advancing conservative initiatives on the state and national levels, are strictly confidential; they are cautioned to keep a close eye on their meeting notes and materials. But last week, following the Kochs’ first donor gathering of 2014, one attendee left behind a sensitive document at the Renaissance Esmeralda resort outside of Palm Springs, California, where the Kochs and their comrades had spent three days focused on winning the 2014 midterm elections and more. The document lists VIP donors—including John Schnatter, the founder of the Papa John’s pizza chain—who were scheduled for one-on-one meetings with representatives of the political, corporate, and philanthropic wings of Kochworld. The one-page document, provided to Mother Jones by a hotel guest who discovered it, offers a fascinating glimpse into the Kochs’ political machine and shows how closely intertwined it is with Koch Industries, their $115 billion conglomerate.

From NY Times: The Senate failed to move forward on a three-month extension of assistance for the long-term unemployed on Thursday, leaving it unlikely that Congress would approve the measure soon while undercutting a key aspect of President Obama’s economic recovery plan.

The Senate did not fail. The Republican Party sabotaged it. Every Democrat voted for it. All but four Republicans voted against it.

From Think Progress: With the 2014 Winter Olympics kicking off Friday, all eyes are on Sochi to see who will violate Russia’s ban on “gay propaganda.” This ambiguous law, purportedly designed to protect children from homosexuality, has been used to punish any positive messages about LGBT people; just on Friday, more than a dozen were arrested in St. Petersburg for a sign quoting the Olympics’ nondiscrimination ordinance (Principle 6).

The International Olympics Committee seems to have arranged a truce with Russia that the law will not be enforced during the Games, but has also discouraged athletes from making any political statements. A “speakers corner” has been set up for athletes, but it’s several miles away from any of the venues and President Vladimir Putin said this week that Sochi is “not the place” to debate gay rights.

Of the 2,500 athletes attending the games, only seven are openly gay, an improbably low proportion, but openly lesbian Dutch snowboarder Chery Maas has already flashed her unicorn rainbow glove for the camera . It remains to be seen how enforcement of the law will actually play out, but here are 10 attendees who are likely to violate the ban:

I’m writing for tomorrow and feeling like what the elephant in today’s cartoon did, so this Open Thread will deal with just one issue.  I bet you can guess which one it is.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 4:04 (average 4:54).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From The New Yorker: All lanes of traffic on the George Washington Bridge were blocked this afternoon by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s ego, traffic reports said.

Aerial images of the bridge showed traffic snarling for miles as Mr. Christie’s massive self-regard shut down all lanes on the upper and lower roadways. Tracy Klugian, a frustrated motorist attempting to head back to his home in Montclair, New Jersey, echoed the feelings of many drivers whose passage was blocked by the gargantuan ego: “First the polar vortex, and now this.”

A spokesman for the New York City Department of Transportation advised motorists to avoid the Governor’s ego by using the Lincoln and Holland tunnels “before Chris Christie remembers they’re there.”

Bridgeghazi!

From NY Times:

The mystery of who closed two lanes onto the George Washington Bridge — turning the borough of Fort Lee, N.J., into a parking lot for four days in September — exploded into a full-bore political scandal for Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday. Emails and texts revealed that a top aide had ordered the closings to punish the town’s mayor after he did not endorse the governor for re-election.

“Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” Bridget Anne Kelly, a deputy chief of staff to Mr. Christie, emailed David Wildstein, a high school friend of the governor who worked at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the bridge.

Later text messages mocked concerns that school buses filled with students were stuck in gridlock: “They are the children of Buono voters,” Mr. Wildstein wrote, referring to Mr. Christie’s opponent Barbara Buono.

The emails are striking in their political maneuvering, showing Christie aides gleeful about some of the chaos that resulted. Emergency vehicles were delayed in responding to three people with heart problems and a missing toddler, and commuters were left fuming. One of the governor’s associates refers to the mayor of Fort Lee as “this little Serbian,” and Ms. Kelly exchanges messages about the plan while she is in line to pay her respects at a wake.

I bring you clips of Bill Maher, whenever I can, because if there is a humorous equivalent to the panic button, he manages to push it every time!

Maher

Friday night on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” host Bill Maher offered a very simple tip to the Republican Party on their outreach efforts. Particularly when it comes to young people, Maher said, the GOP needs to realize that pot deregulation is actually a fundamentally conservative cause and that Millennials are never going to go for the gun thing…

What can I say? On a scale of one to ten, he’s not only 100% hilarious, but also, today he’s even 100% right!

Stewart Harpooned a Rat

Although it can be a bit uncomfortable when Jon Stewart lampoons us for something like the shortcomings of the ObamaCare website, he is usually fully justified, even when I don't like it.  However, I have to admit that I am much happier when Jon is setting his sights on a rat.

RoveRat

Jon Stewart had a field day on last night’s Daily Show mocking Republican Karl Rove for all the political mishaps the Republicans have caused which have ultimately undermined the credibility of the GOP and backfired against Rove.

Stewart said Rove had no right to complain about the numerous Tea Party blunders considering he invited them, citing a number of examples whereby the same Republicans who were advocating for the Tea Party were now in the painful process of having to clean up the mess:

“It’s as though the entire misguided shutdown affair was a culmination of a decade-long strategy to rile up and politically engage the most rigid and ideological pockets of the Republican party…which is why Karl Rove has no right to complain about all these radicals ruining his nice Republican party, because he’s the one who invited them,” Stewart preached…

Rove Rat was most successful at activating the anger points of hate-filled wing-nuts. I must admit, I enjoy few thinks more than seeing Turd Blossom buried in his own turd.

Thou shalt have no other gods before money.

Thou shalt not take unto thee any thought not learned on Faux Noise.

Thou shalt not take the name of Saint Ronnie Ray Gun in vain.

Remember April 15, and evade paying thy taxes.

Honor thy father and thy mother, whilst cutting their Social Security and privatizing their Medicare.

Thou shalt kill whoever thy leaders tell thee to hate.

Thou shalt commit adultery, but thou shalt not get caught.

Thou shalt steal money from the poor to give to the rich.

Thou shalt always bear false witness against thy librul neighbor.

Thou shalt covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt covet thy neighbor’s wife, and his manservant, and his maidservant, and his ox, and his ass, and his wife’s ass, and every thing that is thy neighbor’s.

Thou shalt suck Koch.

Thou shalt commit TEAbuggery.

From Upworthy: Congress Did Something So Spectacularly Creepy That It’s Too Unbelievable To Make Up

On the House floor, Congressman Chris Van Hollen decided to get a clarification on the rules of the shutdown. Apparently, normally any congressperson can call for a vote on any bill at any time. But just before the shutdown happened, the GOP quietly passed a measure that said only House Majority Leader Eric Cantor can call for the shutdown to end (unless he gives a designee permission).

If nothing else, this should show you that, on October 1, the Republican Party leadership anticipated that their sedition would comprise a minority position, even in the House where Republicans hold the majority.  They acted to prevent majority rule, thereby rendering the democratic process in Congress moot. Seven pieces of DINO dog crap betrayed America and goose-stepped with the Republicans in support of HR 368: Ron Barber AZ-2, John Barrow GA-12, Dan Maffei NY-24 Sean Patrick Maloney NY-18, Jim Matheson UT-4, Mike McIntyre NC-7 and Collin Peterson MN-7.  Of one of them is yours, tell them what you think of what they did.

From The New Yorker: Adding his voice to the eleventh-hour debate about the government shutdown, Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) today proposed reopening just enough of the government to hold new hearings on Benghazi.

“Across this great nation of ours, people are suffering,” he told Fox News’s Megyn Kelly. “Suffering, Megyn, because they still don’t know what really happened in Benghazi.”

Noting that the government shutdown had furloughed investigators who could be looking into Benghazi, he said, “If there’s something in our government more worthy of funding than that, I can’t think of it.”

Andy may have just given Idiot, Son of Idiot, Named after Idiot an idea.
