I should be around most of the day, but I have a bit of volunteer work to do on the 7th Step blog. I set it up in on their web site with WordPress. When I went offline, nobody else knew how to run it, so it lay dormant for over a year. When I returned, it could not be accesses due to a database error. I know nothing at all about how to fix that, but I guess I’ll have to learn. I hope you all have a great weekend.

In the best laid plans of mice and men, I didn’t go to prison yesterday. It’s 70 miles away and my ride there had something come up. I felt bad, because the guys behind bars look forward to support from the outside, especially from people who have been where they are and are now maintaining freedom. So it was a sad day for me.

I feel armed and dangerous, because I can now grip my weapon of choice in my right hand. It’s an optical mouse, and I hope it lasts longer than the last one. I may be just a little scarce today, because I spent several hours researching the editorial that is today’s top story here. Six year old info is hard to find.

I’ll be scarce again today, because this is the day I volunteer in the prison. I expect to be gone from late morning until well [past my normal bedtime. So I probably won’t get out to visit blogs. Please bear with me.

Yesterday, my mouse gave up the ghost, and it was almost brand new. I contacted Logitech, and they said to return it in it’s original packaging for a replacement in four to six weeks. First of all, it was in one of those plastic things that make it impossible to get out without destroying the original packaging. Second, I’ve never used the touch pad in a notebook before. I’ve been using a mouse since the Amiga came out in 1985. That was a sweet machine for its day. Anyway, after 34 years of mouse, this touchpad seems completely counterintuitive to me, so I won’t go four to six weeks without one. This touch pad is really slowing me down. Needless to say, I won’t be recommending the Logitech Notebook Mouse. 🙁

I’ll be scarce today because I’ll be helping in a therapy group. Please don’t feel ignored if I don’t get your comments answered in a timely manner or make it to your blogs.

Did you see Tom Delay on Dancing with the Stars? If only that creep were as clumsy in court as he is on the dance floor, his dance partner would be his cellmate.

Here’s an interesting blurb from TPM.

Yesterday in Richmond, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) reminded us how hollow Republicans can sound addressing real people with real problems. When a woman told the story of an uninsured friend stricken with cancer, Cantor suggested she seek out "an existing government program" (presumably the ones Republicans haven’t succeeded in eliminating yet), a charity, or one of the "hospitals here who do provide charity care."

It’s like the GOP plan for the homeless. They will help if you send them a stamped, self addressed envelope. And the GOP plan for the jobless is they’ll help if you send them a request on your company letterhead. The only plan that woman’s poor friend can seek out is the GOP plan for the critically ill, the Social Security death benefit.

I’ll be around today, but I’ll be slowed down by work to ret ready for meetings later this week. We’re having another heat wave with temperatures over 90 through tomorrow. That wrings me out.

I guess it’s time for me to come out of the closet. At the FRC’s American Taliban Summit, Dave Weigel, Chief of Staff for Oklahoma Senator Tom “No Care” Coburn, announced that all pornography is gay pornography. Looking at Playboy will turn a boy gay, he says. Now I always thought I liked the ladies, but I did look at Playboy as a boy, and if that’s what Supply-side Jesus is telling his shock troopers, maybe I am gay. 😉

I should be around enough today to visit the regulars here and maybe look for new friends and new sources.

My religious experience yesterday was excellent with several close NFL games to track. But how did the Bumble Bowl go, between Randal’s Browns and my Broncos? A picture is worth a thousand words.

Today I will be scarce, because it’s worship at the First Church of the Ellipsoid Orb. The highlight (or perhaps lowlight) of the service will be the meeting between Randal’s bungling Browns and my befuddled Broncos, gelded in the Cutler/Orton trade. Good luck, Randal. We’ll both need it.

On a personal note, I’ll be a little bust today with real-life chores to do.

Following up yesterday’s article on Corporate Campaign Cash as Speech, yesterday the US Court of Appeals in Washington ruled that current laws violated the free speech rights of Emily’s list, a nonprofit corporation that backs women who are Democratic candidates and supports pro-choice issues. While I am all for what they do, I’m not going to act like a Republican and switch sides on issues depending on political context. Even a progressive nonprofit corporation is still a corporation, and corporations ought not have the same rights as humans. Like Judge Sotomayor said, SCOTUS needs to reexamine the notion that corporations have human rights without human responsibilities. To read AP article, Click Here.

I notices something interesting yesterday when examining our counter stats. We had a visit from the US Senate Sergeant At Arms office that lasted for six hours and forty five minutes, viewing mostly the article and comments on corporate cash as speech. It gratifies me to know that our opinions have reached the halls of power.

PHP is a programming language used to build websites. We have it at all through our hosting partner, BlueHost. In order to update it, we have to go through Bluehost. During his life, TomCat was the only one who had access to our account there. I (JD) am now the only one. I have been to BlueHost and investigated updating our PHP to 8.3 or even to 8.1. I found instructions to do so - in fact, I found two conflicting sets of instructions. I went through one set of the steps and got the message that Our site could not handle 8.3, but that it had successfully updated to 8.1. I then went back here to see what it looked like. But I couldn't get in - either as an administrator or as a reader. It was just gone. I had to reach BlueHost by phone. It was determined that Politics Plus is in fact not compatible with any version of PHP newer than the one we have. BlueHost therefore uninstalled it for me, and the site came back to normal. Of course, like everyone else, I care about security. But I also am aware that TomCat elected to use different providers for several of the services that BlueHost provides, for instance backups. We are backed up daily - but not by BlueHost. However, out PHP is through Bluehost. I feel that if they are not worried about the older version, I am not going to worry about it. I believe that our security here is all or mostly through WordFence, whom I trust.
