Yesterday I replied to outstanding comments and visited my entire blogroll. It took about eight hours to do so. Today I have a lot of paperwork to do here, so I’ll have to see how that transpires. It was a very slow news day, so I have no short takes.

From Washington Post: Utah Sen. Bob Bennett lost his bid to be nominated for a fourth term Saturday, defeated at the state Republican Party convention amid a strong conservative sentiment that threatens to unseat other establishment-backed Republicans in the months to come.
Bennett, who had spent the past two decades as a respected insider in the Senate, came under fire in recent months for what some claimed were his insufficient conservative bona fides.

From Common Dreams: Oil giant BP has successfully lowered a giant concrete-and-steel box over a ruptured well that has been spilling hundreds of thousands of tonnes of crude into the Gulf of Mexico.
If successful, it will temporarily contain about 85% of the oil flow. I hope and pray it works.
From TPM: Investigators for the panel were holed up in a Las Vegas hotel yesterday, where they interviewed several key figures in the case, KLAS-TV reports. A woman "who looks just like" Cynthia Hampton, Ensign’s former mistress, was seen entering the hotel, accompanied by her husband’s lawyer, Dan Albregts, says the station. She stayed for two hours.
The noose is tightening. I hope they aren’t forgetting the criminal rolw played by his C-Street cronies.
From Politico: Look for President Obama to name his Supreme Court pick Monday, and look for it to be Solicitor General Elena Kagan, a former Harvard Law dean. The pick isn’t official, but top White House aides will be shocked if it’s otherwise. Kagan’s relative youth (50) is a huge asset for the lifetime post. And President Obama considers her to be a persuasive, fearless advocate who would serve as an intellectual counterweight to Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Scalia, and could lure swing Justice Kennedy into some coalitions.
I prefer Diane Wood, because she is more progressive than Kagan.

From Hate Watch: Fox News made the alarming claim this morning that 2,158 Americans are murdered every year by undocumented immigrants.
Problem is, it’s almost certainly wrong.
In response to our request for comment, a Fox News spokeswoman said she would look into precisely where that number came from. (We will update this post when we hear from her.)
I hope they are not holding their breath, while they wait for a reply.
From TPM: In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) has been a vocal critic of federal spending under President Obama, but as the state closest to the undersea leak, he already has requested various forms of federal disaster assistance. He’s also anticipating the possibility that British Petroleum either won’t, or won’t have to under the law, foot the the full cost of all the damages associated with the spill.
As much as my heart breaks for the people of Louisiana, perhaps financial aid should be delayed until they vote out all the GOP monsters who brought this on them. After all, they elected the creeps. Should elections have consequences?

Yesterday I had no time to answer comments or return visits. I think I mentioned that the therapist I used to help with a group of former prisoners retired, and I’m now working with her replacement. She asked me, if I would start staying later to help with one-on-one people. By the time I returned home I was pooped and starving. I quit Facebook yesterday. I received an email from my parole officer, saying that he prefers his clients not to use the service. If you were not aware that I’m a former prisoner, please see the ‘About Me’ page here. Today I hope to catch up a bit, but it’s my last day of pulmonary boot camp, so we’ll see.

His purpose will be to put up a smoke screen. That hearing will be a rough day for the science-hating GOP.
From Think Progress: In the wake of the massive BP oil spill, Senate Republicans are disowning the catchphrase “Drill, Baby, Drill,” claiming that Republicans never endorsed it. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) attempted to distance themselves and their party from the phrase yesterday, pretending not to know who popularized it, and dismissing the slogan as something from “two, three years ago”.
It is equally true that the Pope is not Catholic, and bears do not sh*t in the woods.

From Crooks and Liars: Larry King talked to Robert Kennedy Jr. who is representing the fishermen in Louisiana in a class action law suit against British Petroleum and James Carville about the incident at the Deepwater Horizon rig. Besides the problems with Halliburton and their faulty work with the cementing process and the lack of and the lack of an acoustic switch, Kennedy said they were also violating their permit by drilling too deeply. Although they were only permitted to drill down 18,000 ft., Kennedy said they now have evidence that they were drilling as deeply as 25,000 ft. [emphasis added]
This clear violation of the law is yet another reason that BP should not be allowed a liability cap.

From NY Times: Federal agents and police detectives arrested a Connecticut man, a naturalized United States citizen from Pakistan, early Tuesday in connection with the failed Times Square car bombing, according to people briefed on the investigation.
The man, Faisal Shahzad, was believed to have recently bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder that was found loaded with gasoline, propane, fireworks and fertilizer in the heart of Times Square, one of the people briefed on the development said.
Mr. Shahzad was taken into custody at Kennedy Airport, apparently trying to flee, one of the people said.
I’ve been holding off on this story until I have enough reliable information to have something valid to say.
From Think Progress: Last week, the Florida State Senate passed an anti-choice abortion measure that requires women seeking an abortion to first pay for an ultrasound out of pocket and “in most cases, view live images of the fetus.” During the floor debate on the amendment, GOP Senator Michael Bennett got caught looking at pornography on his government issued computer.
GOP ‘family values’ hypocrisy never ebbs, but what’s the big deal here? Anything that distracts Republicans from screwing up the country has to be a plus for America.

Yesterday I had a bad air day I felt exhausted all day long and severe coughing kept me awake. After5 finishing my paperwork and errands, I went back to bed. Today I have a volunteer appointment, so expect little. It was also a slow news day, so I have little to put up and no short takes.
