It’s a Revenue Problem!

As we move inexorably toward the sequester, Republicans keep parroting the same lie that they have told so often and so long, that most of America has bought it.  They say, “America has a spending problem.”  The truth is that the problem is a revenue problem.

taxcuts-cost

Democrats and Republicans remain at odds on how to avoid a round of budget cuts so deep and arbitrary that to allow them now could push the economy back into recession. The cuts, known as a sequester, will kick in March 1 unless Republicans agree to President Obama’s demand to a legislative package that combines spending reductions and tax increases. As of Thursday, with the deadline a week off, Republicans seemed determined to say no to any new tax increases.

“Spending is the problem,” declared the House speaker, John Boehner. “Spending must be the focus.” Reflecting the views of many of her Republican colleagues, Representative Martha Roby said Wednesday that Mr. Obama “already got his tax increase” as part of the January agreement over the “fiscal cliff” and that no further increases were necessary.

Both are wrong. To reduce the deficit in a weak economy, new taxes on high-income Americans are a matter of necessity and fairness; they are also a necessary precondition to what in time will have to be tax increases on the middle class. Contrary to Mr. Boehner’s “spending problem” claim, much of the deficit in the next 10 years can be chalked up to chronic revenue shortfalls from the Bush-era tax cuts, which were only partly undone in the fiscal-cliff deal earlier this year. (Wars and a recession also contributed.) It stands to reason that a deficit caused partly by inadequate revenue must be corrected in part by new taxes. And the only way to raise taxes now without harming the recovery is to impose them on high-income filers, for whom a tax increase is unlikely to cut into spending.

As it happens, those taxpayers are the same ones who benefited most from Bush-era tax breaks and who continue to pay low taxes. Even with recent increases, the new top rate of 39.6 percent is historically low; investment income is still taxed at special low rates; and the heirs of multimillion-dollar estates face lower taxes than at almost any time in modern memory… [emphasis added]

This author is spot on, except that increased revenue from more people working should eliminate the need to raise middle class taxes. Most do not realize just how bad the inequity is. Ed Schultz explains why the capital gains tax needs to be reformed.

Did you catch that? The top 0.1% get 47% of all capital gains income. The rest of the top 47% also get 47% of capital gains income. But Ed’s chart was not correctly labeled. It is the bottom 80% who get the remaining 6%. If you spend $1 in raw materials and overhead to produce, through your hard work, a widget that you sell for $5. You pay standard taxes on that income. If a 1% member of the super-rich invests $1, and through sitting on his fat ass, the value that investment grows to $5, he pays the reduced capital gains tax rate on that income. Republicans stacked the deck to favor the super rich over you, and the only way we are going to get the capital gains tax reform that America needs is to remove the Republicans.

In my opinion, we face a special short term danger.  If the sequester actually happens, I think House Republicans will pass a bill that restores the defense cuts only.  If such a bill reaches the Senate, it must not be allowed to come to the floor, because Democrats in conservative districts will fear voting NO,  If they do Republicans will accuse them of being soft on defense and of costing American workers defense jobs.  For Republicans to get away with making just the domestic cuts  would be tragic for America.

Help CREW Shine a Light

Donors to 503(c)(4) groups may remain anonymous, because 503(c)(4) groups are required to focus exclusively on social welfare.  However, Republicans are using 503(c)(4) groups, like Rove’s Crossroads GPS, for political purposes illegally.  They are getting away with it because of an IRS loophole.  Here is the full text of an email I received yesterday.

Dear TomCat,

This week, CREW sued the IRS in federal court for undermining a law barring political activity by dark money groups.

22CREWAlthough the law says 501(c)(4) groups must operate “exclusively” for social welfare purposes, an IRS regulation says the groups may operate “primarily” for such purposes.

Groups like Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS and the American Action Network (AAN) have flooded the airwaves with political attack ads secretly funded by anonymous billionaires and corporations. Joining CREW’s lawsuit is Dr. David Gill, a former congressional candidate in Illinois who lost his race last year as a result of a barrage of scurrilous attacks from AAN.

Unable or unwilling to enforce even the weakest regulations on the books, the IRS has sat on its hands for the past two election cycles. It’s time for the agency to explain its deplorable inaction to the American public.

No other organization has taken a more aggressive stance against dark money than CREW. We’ve revealed information about who funds these groups, and highlighted the failures of the agencies charged with regulating them.

Our lawsuit is a key step in exposing the special interests eroding our democracy. We know there is much more work to be done, and we need your help.

Donate today to help us shine a light on dark money.

We’re honored to have you behind us as we continue to fight for a Washington that works for everyone.

Thank you,

Melanie Sloan

Not all of us can help financially, but please spread the word and inform others about the issue, and the fine work CREW is doing.

From MoveOn: Bill Nye The Science Guy Made A Video For Those Who Wonder About These Crazy Weather Patterns

This does NOT require rocket science. What the article missed is that Congressional Republicans are the world’s largest source of methane. 😉

From Media Matters: On February 7, Breitbart.com’s Ben Shapiro reported that Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel (according to "Senate sources") received money from a group called "Friends of Hamas." The report spread quickly through the conservative media as damning of Hagel, until Dave Weigel at Slate.com pointed out a salient fact — there’s no evidence that "Friends of Hamas" exists. Now, New York Daily News reporter Dan Friedman is claiming that a joke he shared with a GOP source is the provenance of "Friends of Hamas." In response to their story falling apart, Shapiro and Breitbart.com — who angrily and self-righteously demand accountability from the rest of the media for every slip-up, real or imagined — are lashing out and refusing to accept responsibility for publishing a report based on a falsehood.

Needless to say, Republican Senators and the Republican Ministry of Propaganda, Faux Noise, reported this Breitfart InsaniTEA as gospel.

From MSNBC: Ed Schultz covered the previous item with Dan Rather.

I do disagree with Rather’s implication that, since the Internet is where the bad information often starts, information from the Internet is not reliable.  I am a commentator, not a reporter, but personally, I rarely post any article I have not confirmed from at least two main stream sources. When I do, I say so at the time, so readers know that the information is not as solid as my norm. What integrity problem there is on the left, comes almost only from the extreme fringes. But on the right, integrity is the exception, not the rule.  That distinction is too important not to make.

Boehner and the 98%

Posted by at 3:03 am  Politics
Feb 212013

One normally associates John Boehner, aka Agent Orange, with the 1%.  However, there is now an instance in which the 98% comes into play.  It is happening, because Boehner is trying to blame the Republican sequester on Obama.  Let us not forget that the sequester was written into the law only because Republicans demanded a guarantee of future spending cuts, before they would stop holding the good faith and credit of the US hostage, and Boehner was a key player in getting it passed.  Now he claims he had nothing to do with it.

21Boehner98

With deep sequestration cuts just days away, Congress is on vacation. But they’ve still got plenty of time to play the blame game.

The latest semantic spin is to call the looming $1.2 trillion in cuts, which could throw the whole economy back into recession, “Obama’s Sequester.” House Speaker John Boehner indulged this approach half a dozen times in a floor speech before he went on break, establishing its place in the talking-points firmament.

There are a couple problems with this tactic, as my colleague Michael Tomasky pointed out Tuesday. Congress passed sequestration before the president signed it, and the whole self-defeating exercise was carried out in response to Tea Party Republicans’ insistence that we play chicken with the debt ceiling, which ultimately cost America its AAA credit rating.

But here’s the thing. I happened to come across an old email that throws cold water on House Republicans’ attempts to call this “Obama’s Sequester.”

It’s a PowerPoint presentation that Boehner’s office developed with the Republican Policy Committee and sent out to the Capitol Hill GOP on July 31, 2011. Intended to explain the outline of the proposed debt deal, the presentation is titled: “Two Step Approach to Hold President Obama Accountable.”… [emphasis added]

So as much as Agent Orange calls the Republican sequester Obama’s, don’t forget that his fingerprints are all over it.  Here is where the 98% enters the picture.  Since he got 98% of what he wanted, it is 98% his own.

McCain in Jekyll Mode

If any politician personifies Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it’s John McCain (R-AZ).  In Jekyll mode he’s McCain.  In Hyde mode, he’s McConJob.  Unfortunately, since he began to run for President in 2008, he has spent most of his time as McConJob, but on Tuesday, he spent some very difficult time as McCain.

21McCainSen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) defended his immigration proposals and border enforcement efforts during a heated town hall meeting in Arizona on Tuesday.

McCain, who is part of the so-called Gang of Eight senators working on immigration reform, hosted two gatherings Tuesday, where residents expressed concern and frustration about border security, reported the Associated Press. …

…"Arizona Nightly News" reported that the 75-minute town hall meeting was dominated by hostile questions about immigration reform…

As praiseworthy as was his performance at this town hall meeting, one cannot help appreciating the humor in the irony that the man who helped put the Teabaggers on the map, the man who brought us Sarah Palin, aka Drill Baby Dingbat, aka Bullseye Barbie, is now falling victim to his own McConJob Teabuggery.

From MoveOn: The NRA Is On Thin Ice, And Here's How You Can Tell

Sadly, telling a Congress Critter (no relation) not to take money is like telling a bear not to shit in the woods.

From NY Times: House Republicans, shrugging off rising pressure from President Obama, are resolutely opposing new tax increases to head off $85 billion in across-the-board spending reductions, all but ensuring the cuts will go into force March 1 and probably remain in place for months, if not longer.\Despite new calls from the White House on Wednesday to enact a combination of tax increases and cuts to postpone the so-called sequester, the House is moving forward on a legislative agenda that assumes deep and arbitrary cuts to defense and domestic programs — once considered unthinkable — will remain in place through the end of the year.

Republicans claim to want a 'balanced' solution between tax increases and spending cuts. They say we have already enacted the tax increases. However, they want more spending cuts right now that the level of the recent tax increases. Further more, for the last two years, we have had nothing but spending cuts. Thus the Republican notion of 'balanced' is an elephant on one of a teeter-totter, and an ant on the other.

From MSNBC: Junk in the trunk

Because they could not survive as just the party of the rich, the Republican Party sowed the wind. They opened their arms and welcomed extremists of all sorts, no matter how violent, no matter how hateful, no matter how bigoted, and no matter how well suited for a tinfoil hat. Now they are reaping the whirlwind, because the miscreants they sought to use and control have become the party's base, and they are nominating, and in many cases, electing their own instead of the establishment Republicans. Furthermore. Those establishment Republicans who remain are doing so only as long as they do the will of their rabid base. In my opinion, the party cannot survive in the long term, unless they abandon both their base and their billionaires and start fresh, a process that would put them out of power for several election cycles.

During the run-up to the election in November, we discussed the many corporate criminals who threatened their employees with termination if they voted for Obama.  As despicable as the behavior of these Republicans was, it appears that it was not just an empty threat in all cases.

20youre_fired

A Kettering woman alleges in a lawsuit that she was fired for voting for President Obama, a charge the company denies.

Patricia Kunkle is seeking in excess of $25,000 from Dayton-based defense contractor Q-Mark, Inc. and its president and owner, Roberta “Bobbie” Gentile, in a suit filed in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. (What do you think: Are your politics any of your employer’s business?)

Kunkle’s lawsuit claims Gentile threatened employees with termination last year if President Obama was re-elected and that Obama supporters would be the first to be terminated if he were re-elected. Kunkle’s suit said her voting preferences came up in conversation the day after the election and that she was fired Nov. 9 for what the suit claims Gentile said was in the “best interest of the company.”

“Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, taking it to the extreme of impairing somebody’s career because they disagree with your political choices is just wrong,” said Kunkle’s attorney, Karen Dunlevey. “We’re hoping that the court will recognize that and adopt a public policy exception for her.”… [emphasis added]

Frankly, it should be illegal for employers to threaten employees for their political views, let alone fire them.  The Republican War on the Poor and Middle Classes continues.
