Warren on Vaccines

I have felt troubled, by the recent controversy over vaccines brought about by fools like PIGnocchio, and especially Idiot, Son of Idiot, Named after Idiot.  I had a friend tell me how dangerous vaccines have become, I explained that a duck follows Dr. Mercola (her source) around to sound the warning.  Fortunately someone else is sounding the warning far better than a duck.

Warren2Sen. Elizabeth Warren is not having any of your anti-vaxxer nonsense, or any of Sen. Rand Paul’s anti-vaxxer nonsense either. At a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee hearing on vaccinations, Warren had some questions for the director for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC:

“Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause autism?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause ‘profound mental disorders’?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines have contributed to the rise in allergies or auto-immune disorders among kids?”

“Are there additives or preservatives in vaccines that can be toxic to kids?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that giving kids their vaccines further apart or spacing them differently is healthier for kids?”

“Is there any scientific evidence that kids can develop immunity to these diseases on their own, simply by eating nutritious foods or being active?”

(Answer key: No, no, no, no, no, and no.)

Important questions, but one stood out: "Is there any scientific evidence that vaccines cause ‘profound mental disorders’?"

Rand Paul last week: "I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines."

Here she is in action:

The facts are clear.  Bringing back diseased that we have completely controlled is insane, and too high a price to pay for for a few wing-nuts to just want to inspire fear.

Day 100.  I’m going to stop looking it up every day.  It’s still increasing, until and unless you see “Day 1”.  Today is an authentic TGIF day.  It’s been a busy week.  Next week, I have a Urologist appointment and a dinner appointment with a friend in addition to all the normal survival things.  I’ll also probably meet with a lawyer.  She represents one of my guys, who has a parole hearing in March.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 7:32 (average 7:14).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?  It’s NOT edible!! 🙁

Short Takes:

From Upworthy: If you take a puppy video break today, make sure this is the dog video you watch.

An excellent ides, but cats could have done a much better job of the video than dawgs!!

From The New Yorker: Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is steadily rising to the top of the 2016 Republican Presidential field because voters are connecting with his “strong and consistent opposition to knowledge,” an aide to Walker said on Thursday.

While Republican candidates of the past, such as Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, have capitalized on G.O.P. voters’ hostility toward verifiable facts, the aide said, “Compared to Scott, those two look like rookies.”

Walker has burnished his anti-knowledge credentials in Wisconsin by proposing a three-hundred-million-dollar cut in the University of Wisconsin’s funding and by deleting the phrase “the search for truth” from the values outlined in the university’s mission statement.

“That truth thing was a masterstroke,” the aide said. “Our polling shows that voters who oppose knowledge also have negative feelings about truth.”

But Walker’s longstanding opposition to knowledge may have faced its toughest test during a visit to London, on Wednesday, when an interviewer asked him if he believed in evolution and he refused to answer. “He tried to trick Governor Walker into admitting that he knew something, and Scott didn’t take the bait,” the aide said. “I was watching him do that and I was like, ‘Nailed it.’ ”

Andy got this one wrong. The Fartfuhrer of Fitzwalkerstan certainly does know something. He knows how to take over a prosperous state and trash it. He can’t wait to do the same for the country.

From Daily Kos: On February 10, 2015, a 46-year old ‘self proclaimed’ atheist, took his gun, managed his way into his neighbor’s home, and shot them to death. Craig Stephen Hicks killed three innocent young Muslim students, execution-style, in Chapel Hill, then turned himself in hours later. The lives he stole were Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21; her husband, Deah Barakat, 23; and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. Yusor and Deah were married just two months ago. All three victims were students, and very loved within the community. Thousands came out to pay tribute in a candlelight vigil held Wednesday night at the UNC (University of North Carolina) campus.

I mention ‘atheist’ in the title because I think it’s important for the media, especially the Liberal media, to make sure the word is not left out. Why? Because if the killer were a self-proclaimed ‘Christian,’ it would be mentioned. And if the killer were a self-proclaimed ‘Muslim,’ it would be mentioned. And what’s really important is for the world to know is this man is not an atheist in any true sense. He’s much different than anything he ‘proclaims’ to be, because this man is an extremist.

Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians, Republican Supply-side pseudo Muslims (ISIL), and Republican Supply-side pseudo- Atheists have this in common. They try to force their religious beliefs on others.  Authentic Christians, authentic Muslims, and authentic Atheists have this in common.  We coexist.

Strike Three Proved Himself

Posted by at 1:46 pm  Politics
Feb 122015

GHW was Strike One.  He was so incompetent that he couldn’t win with his opponent in the midst of the Paula Jones sex scandal.  But he did appoint enough Supreme Court Injustices that they could steal the presidency for his son.  GW was Strike Two, the worst President the US has ever had.  Hundreds of Bushisms reveal his incompetence.  Jeb is trying to portray himself as a different kind of Bush: smart and techy, an e-Bush.  Strike Three!

0212JebJeb Bush may make a presidential run in 2016, but the Republican politician has already make a glaring faux pas, ironically compromising the privacy of some his supporters and critics alike in a blundered attempt at transparency.

Bush decided to publish in Personal Storage Table (.PST) format thousands of emails he received during his eight years as the governor of Florida between 1999 and 2007.  The published emails had been received by his official gubernatorial account, jebATjeb.org. [Strike Three delinked]

What began as ostensibly well intentioned attempt to showcase his open door policy went astray when visitors discovered that the published data trove contained unredacted names, email addresses, physical mailing addresses, phone numbers, and even Social Security numbers

Exposing the personal particulars and violating the privacy of everyone who reached out to him demonstrates a level of competence in the ballpark with Strike One and Strike Two.

02121Jeb2In what may well be the shortest-lived career as a political technology officer, Jeb Bush’s newly appointed Chief Technology Officer, Ethan Czahor, resigned yesterday after he was called out in media for deleting a series of "offensive" tweets.

The Washington Post’s headline was, "Jeb Bush’s chief technology officer resigns after racially insensitive comments."

Czahor, one of the co-founders of Hipster.com, admitted to what the Bush camp described as "regrettable and insensitive comments," such as suggesting that "black parents need to get their sh@# together." He also, in backhanded fashion, expressed his relief that Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t wear "pants sagged to his ankles," or speak in "jibberish." These tweets were written several years ago, but, as Post writer, Phillip Rucker explained, Czahor, "could not survive the racially insensitive comments that surfaced on Tuesday."

Czahor could, however, have survived the sexist ones. The first media reports of his tweets were about his opinions regarding gender and sexuality. Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski  cataloged a whole series of tweets prior to their deletion…

…For good measure, there were also disparaging, homophobic ones. Racist commentary was also brought to light. It’s a bundled service…

While his choice’s values line up perfectly with those the Republican Party practices that message is far more honest than the one he wants to send.  He’s certainly no better at choosing people than Strike One and Strike Two.

Rachel Maddow provided even more detail.

The bottom line here is self-evident.  There is no different kind of Bush.  Jeb is just as honest, just as competent, and just as concerned for the poor and middle classes as his brother.  Strike Three!

Day 98.  I’m running late, because I had to walk to the Post Office to get a money order to donate to my guys in prison.  Their annual banquet comes up in March and April, and I like to help them defer that expense.  I hope to catch a few extra ZZZZs today.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:40 (average 5:20).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Upworthy: In case you were unaware, the giant companies that make most major medications are diabolically, ridiculously sneaky.

My doctor has told me that she does not accept money from Big Pharma. Searching the website confirms it.

From Daily Kos: Many of us want to do something that makes a difference, but funds are tight. One thing that is free and easy to do, is avoid buying from companies that support the hate monger, Rush Limbaugh. The vile Conservative radio talk show host who calls women ‘femi-nazis’ and ‘semen receptacles,’ is mostly known for spreading hate and outright lies, while promoting/inciting racism, lgbt hatred, bigotry, and misogyny. And for 25 years he has gotten away with it. But for the last two years, the general public has become more and more proactive against his type of commentary. Concerned consumers have contacted and petitioned Rush Limbaugh sponsors, and asked them to pull their advertising from his show. For those companies who opt to ignore consumers, they are not only boycotted by hundreds of thousands, they are permanently associating their company’s name/brand, in the minds of many, with a hate monger. Seems a pretty foolish business move, when you think about it.

Here is a list of 10 very loyal Rush Limbaugh sponsors. To support the boycott, one only needs to avoid buying from these companies, and spread the sponsor information. Even if you haven’t heard of these sponsors and/or don’t do business with them, by circulating their names to friends, family, and on social media, you will have an impact. Together, the public is sending a message to businesses and the media, that we do not support companies that support hate speech. Rush Limbaugh has lost thousands of sponsors due to this national boycott, which means he has lost millions in ad revenue.

I fully support boycotting Limbarf. Click through for the list.

From NY Times: The House on Wednesday passed a bill approving construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, setting up a confrontation with President Obama, who has vowed to veto the measure.

The bill, which passed the Senate last month, headed to Mr. Obama’s desk Wednesday night.

The Republican Party is content with considering non productive legislation.  Their only purpose is to create a confrontation.

The Impasse Is No Mystery

Posted by at 3:14 pm  Politics
Feb 112015

Sixteen days from now, on February 27, funding runs out on on the Department of Homeland Security.  Republicans claim that the impasse is a mystery, because they don’t understand why Democrats refuse to compromise.  The impasse is no mystery.  Republicans refuse to offer a clean bill.

0211HSWith a little over two weeks until the Department of Homeland Security runs out of money, Republican leaders in Congress publicly announced Tuesday what had become a grim, if private, truth in the Capitol — they are at an impasse, with no easy way out.

“I think it’s clearly stuck in the Senate,” said Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader. “We can’t get on it, we can’t offer amendments to it. And the next step is obviously up to the House.”

Senate Republicans have failed three times so far to pass a bill to finance the department, which runs out of money on Feb. 27, in what has become a larger proxy fight over President Obama’s immigration policies.

The House last month passed a bill to the pay for department operations, but the legislation included provisions that would have gutted the president’s executive actions on immigration, rolling back legal protections for as many as five million undocumented immigrants, including children.

Senate Democrats, united against anything other than a “clean” spending bill, filibustered to prevent Republicans from taking up the legislation — a maneuver they decried when they were in the minority — and Mr. Obama has promised to veto any bill that undoes his executive actions… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

For the most part, the media are parroting Republican talking points, instead of explaining that Republicans are attempting to usurp Obama’s executive authority.  Passing the bill in it’s current form makes no sense, because Republicans do not have the numbers to overcome a presidential veto.

What we need is a clean bill, which would pass the Senate and the House, if Bought Bitch Mitch and Agent Orange would bring a clean bill to the floor.  Instead, they are catering to their anti-Latino base, for whom racism trumps the security of our nation.  Them we can deal with immigration as the separate issue that it is.

Day 98.  Yesterday’s volunteer meeting in prison was excellent.  Our CoDA group talked about making amends.  Often people are not receptive, when we try.  When that happens, we should accept that without bitterness.  Obtaining a favorable response is not the purpose of making amends.  Our willingness to do so unloads the baggage; so we don’t have to carry it anymore.  The down side, as usual, is that I’m quite worn out today.  I’m waiting for Store to Door to deliver groceries.

From Democratic Party of Oregon: 2015 Legislative Session Agendas

In November, with your help, Oregon Democrats won resounding victories in the State House and State Senate. And thanks to you, they’re already making a difference.

To learn more about what Democrats in the Oregon Legislature are working hard to accomplish right now, view the Democratic session agendas for the Oregon State House and State Senate.

Click the links for House and Senate.  It’s is what Democrats are doing in Oregon. It might well serve as a model for the nation.

From MSNBC: ‘Bears’ have own plan for Jeb Bush campaign site

Since MSNBC took down the video they put on YouTube, we’ll try again. We still don’t know what bears do or don’t do in the woods, but they certainly do on the Bush!!  😀

From Upworthy: Dealing with the mess we’ve made feels overwhelming. Does swapping out your lightbulbs, writing your legislators, and sorting your trash really change anything? How can one person make a difference?

It turns out that our little actions, all added up together, do make a big difference. If everyone in the United States turned off the water while they brush their teeth, the daily savings could be up to 2.528 billion gallons. That’s more than twice as much water than the entirety of New York City uses in a day.

In this tongue-in-cheek video, a cat shows you how he makes a few tiny changes that have a big impact.

I have to say that cats are the wisest of creatures.

How to Increase Voter Turnout

Posted by at 6:56 am  Politics
Feb 102015

I won’t even try to count how many times I’ve complained about low voter turnout, so when a saw an article purporting to have ways to increase voter turnout, I could not resist sharing it with you.  However I do disagree with the author on one key point.

0210VoteVoter turnout in the U.S. during the last midterm election hit the lowest point since the 1940s. The number of Americans heading to the polls each election has been declining for the last fifty years and lawmakers have recently been pushing efforts to keep even more people away from the polls.

People do not exercise their right to vote for various reasons, some of which are easier to solve than others. According to a U.S. Census report from 2013, 14 percent of nonvoting respondents were unable to participate because of an illness or disability, 8.6 percent were out of town, 12.7 percent did not like the candidates or campaign issues and almost 19 percent were too busy. Some people cannot take time off from work on a Tuesday in November, which has led lawmakers including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to call for making Election Day a federal holiday. Others may not feel engaged in politics or informed enough to vote, while 5.85 million U.S. citizens are prohibited from voting due to a felony conviction on their records.

Voting advocates, including those who spoke at the Elections and Voting Summit last week, have been developing and pushing for new ways to get more people to the polls. Unlike laws that restrict access through voter ID laws, shorter registration and early voting periods and disenfranchising felons, these proposals are likely to have support from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle and would not be difficult to implement to get voters to turn out in higher numbers… [emphasis added]

Click through for the list of ideas.

My disagreement is with the author’s statement that these ideas would have bipartisan support.  Republicans may give lip service to such ideas at conferences, but in real life, Republicans are doing everything they can to disenfranchise legitimate voters.

I still think one of the best ways to increase voter turnout is to adopt Oregon’s vote by mail system.

From Daily Kos: Bill Maher had a field day with both Sarah Palin and her Republican critics. “Now that many Republicans have come forward in the last week to finally admit that, ‘okay, you were right, Sarah Palin is a crazy person, they have to ask themselves, ‘What else might I have been completely wrong about all these years?’ In case you missed it, Palin made a speech in Iowa a couple of weeks ago that cryptologists are still working on,” Maher explained on his show Real Time with Bill Maher.

Bill to Republicans slamming Sarah Palin… by ewillies

I think Bloody Bullseye Barbie went all the way to Baggerville. Bill was classic.

From The New Yorker: On Monday, the state of Alabama lost yet another fight to remain in the eighteenth century, extending a losing streak that dates back to the nineteenth century.

Alabama, whose first attempt to remain in the eighteenth century took place between 1861 and 1865, has never shown signs of giving up the fight, even after being dealt a string of stunning defeats in the nineteen-fifties and nineteen-sixties.

According to historians, Monday’s loss brings the number of failed attempts by Alabama to more than four thousand.

But even with this latest defeat, some of the state’s residents, such as Chief Justice Roy Moore, of the Alabama Supreme Court, remained resolute in their fight to return to a time before electricity and indoor plumbing.

Dang!!  Andy’s back to straight news, again!!
