Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Last Thursday (May 7) here at Daily Kos, I published the first public disclosure of a shocking collapse of the state’s voter registration system here in North Carolina under Republican Gov. Pat McCrory. Our analysis of State Board of Elections data revealed that, beginning on or about the time of McCrory’s inauguration in January 2013, new voter registrations originating via the state’s public assistance (welfare) offices had suddenly and inexplicably collapsed by 66%.

Federal law – specifically the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 – requires states to actively encourage and enable every patron of state offices, including public assistance and motor vehicles offices, to register to vote on the spot. The sudden meltdown in North Carolina’s effort to do so, and its continuing failure for more than two years, right up to today, has been responsible for the possible disenfranchisement of up to 40,000 poverty-level citizens (and still counting).

Republicans will do anything to keep minorities and poor people from voting.

From NY Times: It may take a while to learn exactly why an Amtrak train speeding out of Philadelphia Tuesday night suddenly derailed on a sharp curve. Whether the train was going too fast or the equipment failed or it was something else entirely, the horrifying accident left at least seven people dead and more than 200 injured on one of the busiest train routes in the country.

Yet, Wednesday morning, while the wreckage lay on the tracks, the Republican majority on the House Appropriations Committee voted to cut Amtrak’s budget by about $260 million. That would reduce Amtrak’s already inadequate appropriations from $1.4 billion to about $1.1 billion.

As a result of meager financing, railroad experts estimated last month that it would take a $21.1 billion just to repair and replace existing assets in the Northeast Corridor that have outlived their “design life” — tracks, ties, electric wires, communications networks, major bridges and tunnels. That does not include new stations, bullet trains or expanding the system. That’s only fixing what’s already in use.

Among the system’s greatest needs is updated safety equipment, including new systems such as positive train control that can slow a train automatically as it comes to a dangerous curve like the one in Philadelphia. The tracks, especially those along severe curves, also need to be adjusted and repaired so that trains can go at higher speeds.

Republicans claim that it’s wrong to blame them when we don’t know exactly what caused the accident. The head of the NTSB has verified that a positive train control system would have prevented this accident. Although required by law to do so, Amtrak is unable to implement positive control, because Republicans keep slashing Amtrak’s budget, So Republicans can provide more welfare to billionaires and corporate criminals.  Republicans consider dead Americans a small price to pay for 0.1% welfare.

From Alternet: Jon Stewart took aim at the easy pickings of Republican presidential candidates on Tuesday night.

He nailed Upchuck Huck, Bagger Ben, The Cruzin’ Canadian, and Rabid Rubio, and Strike three. He also got Hillary, but he had far less ammo to work with, because she tells the truth more often than not.

Democrats Rejected Fast Track

I wish I could tell you that the headline tells the whole story, but it does not.  As good as it felt to see fast track sent packing, I fear it was only a temporary victory that we won only because Bought Bitch Mitch tried to pull a fast one by welching on the deal Republicans made with a handful of Senate Democrats.

0513TPP

Divisive trade promotion authority legislation the White House is seeking to put the Trans-Pacific partnership on a fast-track to passage ran off the rails today, with the United States Senate voting mostly along party lines not to invoke cloture on the bill. The legislation could still come up again, but at least for the time being, it is blocked, much to the displeasure of Mitch McConnell and Barack Obama.

Fifty-two senators voted to proceed to final passage on the bill, not counting McConnell, who switched his vote from yes to no so that he could bring the legislation up again later. Forty-four senators voted to filibuster.

Although a number of Democrats support granting President Obama the fast-track authority he wants (including, unfortunately, the Pacific Northwest’s Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell, and Ron Wyden), they all voted to filibuster today, with the lone exception of Thomas Carper of Delaware.

The reason? Leverage. Fast-track is a major priority for Mitch McConnell, the top Senate Republican. He wants it bad. Knowing this, Democrats insisted that McConnell bring up three other semi-related pieces of trade legislation as well.

The first, called Trade Adjustment Assistance, is meant to help workers who find themselves out of work due to foreign competition. Another  pertains to custom and trade enforcement, and has provisions concerning currency manipulation. The third would set up trade preferences for nations in sub-Saharan Africa.

McConnell refused to bring up the latter two bills, and so the Democrats stuck together and filibustered the fast-track bill…

Chris Hayes also covered this quite well, interviewing Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and economist Joseph Stieglitz.

I do agree with them.  As much as I’d like TPP to fail permanently, I fear that out best hope is to get a modified version, with provisions to safeguard US workers.

On a scale of one to ten, I’m swamped!!!!  The O2 people just left and I’m waiting for Store to Door to arrive with my groceries.  Then I have to put them away, of course.  Yesterday’s community meeting was interesting.  Our building energy efficiency program is doing well.  Although marijuana will be legal here on 7/1, it may not be brought into the building, because it receives federal funding,  For me, that doesn’t matter, and the smell has been in the hallway since the day I moved in, almost seventeen months ago, anyway.  My friend with cancer is dealing with it very well and has a positive prognosis.  My MRI is now scheduled for Monday.

From The New Yorker: Scientists have discovered a powerful new strain of fact-resistant humans who are threatening the ability of Earth to sustain life, a sobering new study reports.

The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota, identifies a virulent strain of humans who are virtually immune to any form of verifiable knowledge, leaving scientists at a loss as to how to combat them.

“These humans appear to have all the faculties necessary to receive and process information,” Davis Logsdon, one of the scientists who contributed to the study, said. “And yet, somehow, they have developed defenses that, for all intents and purposes, have rendered those faculties totally inactive.”

More worryingly, Logsdon said, “As facts have multiplied, their defenses against those facts have only grown more powerful.”

While scientists have no clear understanding of the mechanisms that prevent the fact-resistant humans from absorbing data, they theorize that the strain may have developed the ability to intercept and discard information en route from the auditory nerve to the brain. “The normal functions of human consciousness have been completely nullified,” Logsdon said….

Andy is close. There are actually two strains. For Republicitis, take Dulcolax. For Republicosis, take Immodium.

From NY Times: Jeb Bush on Tuesday sought to arrest a chorus of criticism from Democrats and some conservatives after he told an interviewer that, knowing what history has since shown about intelligence failures, he still would have authorized the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Calling in to Sean Hannity’s syndicated radio show, Mr. Bush said he had misunderstood a question that one of Mr. Hannity’s Fox News colleagues, Megyn Kelly, had asked him in an interview shown on Sunday and Monday nights.

If Strike Three is so stupid that he can’t understand THAT question, it proves two things. First, he really is Crawford Caligula’s brother. Second, he’s too stupid to be President!

Short Takes:

From NY Times: New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, a golden boy of American sports and perhaps pro football’s biggest star, was suspended Monday for four regular-season games without pay by the N.F.L., which said he had deliberately and secretly violated league rules.

The N.F.L. also fined the Patriots $1 million and took away two prized future draft picks, including a first-round choice in 2016, saying that the team, and Brady, schemed to improperly deflate footballs in the A.F.C. championship game last season on the way to securing New England’s fourth Super Bowl victory.

A deflated football is said to be easier to grip, especially in the cold and wet conditions that the Patriots faced at home against the Indianapolis Colts on Jan. 18.

I fully support this decision. Although I am a fervent devotee of the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb, I think NFL executives and players have gotten away with far too much for far too long. This will hurt Brady and the Patriots where it counts. In the wallet. May the blessed Orb shine its holy light upon you all.

Almost every week, Republicans join a competition to see who can say the most outlandish things, and in the process, they push the envelope on just how nonsensical InsaniTEA can become.  I trust that you will believe it, when I tell you that last week was no exception.

MEXICO PRESCOTT BUSH

Jeb Bush accuses Obama and progressives of intolerance …because religious people can’t discriminate.

Jeb Bush made various veiled references to the apparently unstoppable progress of same-sex marriage and the horrific blows dealt to the "religious freedom" of those who want to discriminate against gay couples during his commencement address Saturday at Liberty University, a Christian school in Lynchburg, Virginia. The former Florida governor and presumptive GOP presidential frontrunner campaigned by slamming the Obama administration for its war on good Christian poeple [sic].

"As usual, the present administration is supporting the use of coercive federal power," Bush reportedly said. "What should be easy calls, in favor of religious freedom, have instead become an aggressive stance against it."

And no, we’re not exactly sure what he is talking about either. Wait, could it be same-sex marriage?

"Somebody here is being small-minded and intolerant, and it sure isn’t the nuns, ministers and laymen and women who ask only to live and practice their faith," Bush continued nonsensically. "Federal authorities are demanding obedience, in complete disregard of religious conscience — and in a free society, the answer is no."

Wait, what was the question?

It’s those old devil progressives again, always trying to move things forward. Hate that.

"The stories vary, year after year, but the storyline is getting familiar," Bush said. "The progressive political agenda is ready for its next great leap forward, and religious people or churches are getting in the way. Our friends on the left like to view themselves as the agents of change and reform, and you and I are supposed to just get with the program."

Yeah, and so what’s the problem with that?

From NY Times: President Obama’s most aggressive and sustained legislative push since the Affordable Care Act faces a crucial first test this week when a divided Senate considers a bill that would grant him accelerated power to complete a massive trade accord with 11 nations across the Pacific Rim.

But after lobbying members of Congress in a campaign that has included rides on Air Force One, meetings in the West Wing, private vows of political support and public attacks on critics in his own party, Mr. Obama’s top legislative priority remains at risk.

A vote scheduled for Tuesday on legislation that would grant him trade promotion authority, also known as “fast track,” has become mired in a procedural thicket, with Democrats — many of them loyal to labor unions bent on killing the bill — vowing to oppose it.

Once Congress grants a president trade promotion authority, lawmakers have the ability to vote up or down on a final trade agreement, but they forfeit the right to amend the deal or filibuster it. The bill before the Senate adds a new twist: If lawmakers decide a final trade accord falls short of their standards, Congress can vote to revoke the president’s authority and then try to amend the deal.

Call your Senators. Tell them to oppose this measure.

From NY Times: Last year the vampires of finance bought themselves a Congress. I know it’s not nice to call them that, but I have my reasons, which I’ll explain in a bit. For now, however, let’s just note that these days Wall Street, which used to split its support between the parties, overwhelmingly favors the G.O.P. And the Republicans who came to power this year are returning the favor by trying to kill Dodd-Frank, the financial reform enacted in 2010.

And why must Dodd-Frank die? Because it’s working.

This statement may surprise progressives who believe that nothing significant has been done to rein in runaway bankers. And it’s true both that reform fell well short of what we really should have done and that it hasn’t yielded obvious, measurable triumphs like the gains in insurance thanks to Obamacare.

But Wall Street hates reform for a reason, and a closer look shows why.

For one thing, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — the brainchild of Senator Elizabeth Warren — is, by all accounts, having a major chilling effect on abusive lending practices. And early indications are that enhanced regulation of financial derivatives — which played a major role in the 2008 crisis — is having similar effects, increasing transparency and reducing the profits of middlemen.

RepublicansOnParade2

Here is the seventieth article in our Republicans on Parade series, featuring individuals who personify what the Republican Party has become. Today’s honoree is Radio Host Michael Savage. He is so honored for the Republican extremity of his conspiracy theories and racism.

0510SavageYesterday on “The Savage Nation [racist delinked],” right-wing talk show host Michael Savage was incensed that President Obama recently quoted a speech Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered to the Daughters of the American Revolution about how Americans are “descended from immigrants and revolutionists.”

Savage pointed to that quote, along with First Lady Michelle Obama’s remarks about how many people of color feel out of place at museums, as proof that the couple want race riots to sweep the country.

Savage, who recently predicted that Obama will begin arming Crips and Bloods gang members, told viewers that the Obamas are a “communist revolutionary couple” who want to “foster dissent and discord in the people and foment revolution.” …
