77-Lona

Lona is still a denizen of Care2, a daily participant here, and a multinational treasure, who spends her time in the Netherlands and Queensland, Australia,  This is her third award, the first on 8/6 shortly after she started commenting here, and the second, less than a month ago on 3/11.  She didn’t give us time to catch pit breath!! Her knowledge of US Politics remains far greater than that of the average American voter. She enjoys sending me naps, when I am tired, and those naps are so high in quality that she frequently causes me to oversleep. If fact, she must have zapped me with a nap on the 4th, and in the process, caused me not to even notice that she had posted comment #77,000, until Thursday night.  So the late award, once again, is her fault!  Smile with tongue out

Please join me in overloading her with hugs and kudos. I look forward to her fourth.

I’m waiting for Lu to come for my shower.  She’s already over an hour late.  I’ll probably be scarce this week, as it’s 6 days until Infernal Revenue Day, I still have both personal taxes and taxes for my prison volunteer organization to do, and I also have three appointments, and a grocery delivery day this week,

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: San Antonio Independent School District Officer Joshua Kehm was captured on video brutally body-slamming a 12-year-old girl who attends Rhodes Middle School.

This is the Republican way to run schools and teach children,

From Alternet: When considering major themes in American history, which he often covers, filmmaker Ken Burns put racism at the top of the list.

I fully agree, but I think we had driven racism into the closet, before the Republican Party adopted it and brought it back into the mainstream.

From Crooks and Liars: Real Time host Bill Maher during his New Rules segment this Friday explains to what’s left of the "sane" wing of the Republican party why they should vote for Hillary Clinton this election cycle and focus on rebuilding their party instead. If we wind up with Clinton and Trump in the general, I expect a lot of the so-called "GOP establishment" will do exactly that.

And a bonus!!

Gotta love Bill!

My new A/C is certainly powerful enough to cool my tiny place.  It’s also very loud, and the noise bothered me last night.  I’m sure I’ll get use to it, and after a night of three, I won’t even hear it.  I’m about to leave to go to PT with Courtney.  Later.  Back and pooped.  George needs an ankle adjustment.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 2:48 (average 4:45).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From The Guardian (H/T Daily Kos):A group of Polish women walk out of a church service to protest against a proposed tightening of the country’s abortion laws. The video, posted on Facebook, shows the women leaving as a priest reads out a letter in favour of the ban. In Warsaw, thousands of people have attended a pro-choice rally outside parliament, after the leader of the ruling party backed a call from Catholic bishops for a full ban on pregnancy terminations.

It looks like Poland has Republicans that hate women too!

From Daily Kos: In disappointing Tuesday news, the Wisconsin Supreme Court race went to Rebecca Bradley, a conservative. Bradley beat progressive candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg in the non-partisan election. Wisconsin residents are now stuck with Bradley for the next ten years.

It’s a sad end to an ugly race, and an ugly type of race at that. Judicial elections are rife with problems as a general matter—politics, bias, secret money, and low voter engagement, to name a few. But in Wisconsin the elections have been particularly grimy.

Bradley is so Republican, she makes Nancy Grace seem like a progressive. This is how she won.

From Media Matters: A Media Matters investigation of the discredited right-wing group Judicial Crisis Network (JCN), the main source of baseless smears against, and false characterizations of, Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, reveals a familial web of self-dealing between the organization, a major dark money funder of JCN called the Wellspring Committee, and a third nonprofit that also receives funding from Wellspring.

I Read It in the Daily News!

Posted by at 12:03 pm  Politics

I read an article a few days ago that expresses the view that Bernie Sanders has no idea what he’s talking about, when it comes to running the economy.  The author’s bias seemed quite clear to me, and although I would have like to have seen more detail from Bernie in the interview, I realize that there was insufficient time to deal with all the complexities of breaking up the TBTF banks.  Unfortunately, other media have joined the corporate chorus.

media biasThe Washington press corps has gone into one of its great feeding frenzies over Bernie Sanders’ interview with New York Daily News. Sanders avoided specific answers to many of the questions posed, which the DC gang are convinced shows a lack of the knowledge necessary to be president.

Among the frenzied were the Washington Post‘s Chris Cillizza, The Atlantic‘s David Graham and Vanity Fair‘s Tina Nguyen, with CNN‘s Dylan Byers telling about it all. Having read the transcript of the interview, I would say that I certainly would have liked to see more specificity in Sanders’ answers, but I’m an economist. And some of the complaints are just silly.

When asked how he would break up the big banks, Sanders said he would leave that up to the banks. That’s exactly the right answer. The government doesn’t know the most efficient way to break up JP Morgan; JP Morgan does. If the point is to downsize the banks, the way to do it is to give them a size cap and let them figure out the best way to reconfigure themselves to get under it.

The same applies to Sanders not knowing the specific statute for prosecuting banks for their actions in the housing bubble. Knowingly passing off fraudulent mortgages in a mortgage-backed security is fraud. Could the Justice Department prove this case against high-level bank executives? Who knows, but they obviously didn’t try.

And the fact that Sanders didn’t know the specific statute—who cares? How many people know the specific statute for someone who puts a bullet in someone’s head? That’s murder, and if a candidate for office doesn’t know the exact title and specifics of her state murder statute, it hardly seems like a big issue… [emphasis original]

And as I reflected on the quality of the high bias and poor quality of this coverage, my mind kept flashing back to a tune we used to sing in the 1960s.

The A/C came yesterday, but is still not installed.  It was warm enough inside yesterday night that I did not sleep well,  Tomorrow I have PT with Courtney.  Since no rain is forecast, I’m going the take the regular bus.  The trip takes longer, but I spend such a shorter time waiting that my total time spent will be less.  Still, I’ll be tired enough that I’ll probably have just a Personal Update.  Later:  The A/C is in and working great!

Short Takes:

From Daily Kos: Within hours of news Tuesday that PayPal had pulled the plug on a 400-job facility in Charlotte because, it said, the state’s new law "perpetuates discrimination," the Republican Party started a mad display of Yosemite-Sam style finger pointing.

First, the state’s GOP Vice-Chairman Michele Nix questioned whether PayPal was ever even worthy of North Carolina.

So after PayPal was forced to settle after violating economic sanctions on Cuba, Sudan, and Iran, and even processed payments for someone looking to buy nuclear-weapon technology on the black market, the California-based company now has a problem doing business in North Carolina?

Yeah, we didn’t want your nasty 400-job expansion anyway. Hurrumph. Now those are some serious biz-dev skills. Work it, Michele!

My, how times have changed. Just a couple weeks ago, McCrory was singing PayPal’s praises:

“North Carolina is the ideal destination for innovation-based, worldwide companies like PayPal,” said Governor McCrory. “Today’s announcement means that we can add another prominent name to the state’s growing list of technology businesses with major operations here.”

Kudos to PayPal!! May thousands of companies pull the plug on the Fascist Republican Theocratic Dictatorship of McCrorystan.!!

From YouTube and YouTube:

Rest in peace.

From NY Times: Donald L. Blankenship, whose leadership of the Massey Energy Company catapulted him from a working-class West Virginia childhood into a life as one of the wealthiest and most influential men in Appalachia, was sentenced on Wednesday to a year in prison for conspiring to violate federal mine safety standards.

The prison term, the maximum allowed by law, came in Federal District Court here six years and one day after an explosion ripped through Massey’s Upper Big Branch mine, killing 29 men. Although Mr. Blankenship was not accused of direct responsibility for the accident, the deadliest in American coal mining in about 40 years, the disaster prompted the inquiry that ultimately led to his conviction. Federal officials have said that last autumn’s guilty verdict was the first time such a high-ranking executive had been convicted of a workplace safety violation.

This is one Republican I’m happy to see in a cell, but serving less than 13 days for every miner he murdered is a major understatement. He’d do more time had he stolen a loaf of bread to feed his family.

Some Much Needed Laughs!

0406TCLaughing

With only the Wyoming caucus before the big New York primary on the 19th, and several more state primaries on the 26th, I decided to give you some laughs instead of my usual daily dose of outrage.  I was feeling a bit politically constipated anyway/  So here are a couple video clips that accurately highlight the intellect of Republican voters.

In the first, a fake reporter tells Trump supporters that quotes from Adolf Hitler are from Trump.

Heil FecalDumpenFuhrer!!

In the second, fake Faux Noise reporters fooled Republicans into believing some really absurd lies.

To me it was obvious that none of those reporter were from Faux Noise.  Not one showed off their legs or cleavage.

In the LIFT bus yesterday, I told a woman about university studies from Maryland U and Fairleigh Dickenson that showed Faux Noise viewers are more poorly informed than people who have no access to news. She called me a liar.

Yesterday, Lu arrived in time, my window A/C was taken out, and I got my shower and became a pristine puddy tat.  Today I have a grocery order and my new portable A/C coming.  Because floor units are not as efficient as window units, I chose a 10,000 BTU unit to replace a 5,000 BTU window unit.  Building staff will install it, either today or tomorrow morning, depending on what time it arrives.  And it’s just in time!  Tomorrow’s high here is forecast at 85°.

Wisconsin was an impressive double-digit win for Bernie, but because of the way they apportion delegates, Bernie cut into Hillary’s lead by only 11 delegates. He now needs 1,324 delegates to clinch the nomination. Hillary needs 634.

From Daily Kos: \Stanley Hoskins spent 13 years in Army, serving as a sergeant in the National Guard. His wife, Erica Flores Dunahoo, put down the first month’s rent at a Mississippi RV park, something she says they were doing to get out of financial difficulty. Stanley and Erica moved in with their children and Erica bragged how friendly everyone had been.

Unfortunately, once the whole family arrived, the situation and attitude of RV park owner Gene Baker quickly changed. From the Clarion-Ledger:

The next day, she said, Baker telephoned her and said, “Hey, you didn’t tell me you was married to no black man.”

She said she replied that she didn’t realize it was a problem.

“Oh, it’s a big problem with the members of my church, my community and my mother-in-law,” she quoted him as saying. “They don’t allow that black and white shacking.”

I don’t suppose we need to ask to which party Baker belongs, do we?

From The New Yorker:

In a sharply worded post-election threat on Tuesday night, the Republican Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump said that he intended to sue the entire population of Wisconsin “for everything it’s worth.”

In his terse remarks, Trump departed from the customs of political concession speeches by failing to congratulate the evening’s winner or thank his supporters, instead sternly warning the people of Wisconsin to “lawyer up.”

“By the time my attorneys are through with you, I’m going to own your entire state, lock, stock, and barrel,” he said. “Not that I want to own it. Wisconsin is a freaking dump.”

LOL Andy!! Will Fecal Dump Trump take a Trump dump on Fitzwalkerstan?

Samantha Goes on Cruz Control

Posted by at 12:25 pm  Politics

Samantha Bee is rapidly becoming one of my favorite people, and I’m increasingly happy to share her work with you.  She presents Republicans in a manner that is both thoroughly accurate, and hilarious.   In her most recent offering she lambasted some of my least-favorite people: Republican Supply-side pseudo-Christians (the polar opposite of authentic Christians), and the only Canadian export more toxic than the poison from the tar sands, Ted Cruz aka TRUSed Uranus.

0405samantha_bee

Even when on vacation – as Samantha Bee currently is – the Full Frontal host still has some of the best material of the late night crowd. Monday evening, the show posted a new clip in which Bee takes a close look at some of the religious leaders supporting Ted Cruz, and finds that they are, in a word, awful.

There’s Colorado Pastor Kevin Swanson, who spends a lot of time talking about how scripture suggests "homosexuals" are “worthy of death” and sea-bottom suffocation resulting from “the Mafia treatment.”

“It’s in the gospel of Tony, wherein Jesus takes that whore Adriana unto the woods and wacketh her,” says Bee. “When Swanson is in doubt – which is never – he just checks his bracelet: Who would Jesus drown?”

Then there’s Flip Benham, a “minister and convicted stalker” who is also an ardent Islamophobe and proponent of the the idea that gay people are super violent…
