It’s another day with lots of pain, but enough sleep.  There has been a small demonstration, marching under my window.  Some chanted "What do we want? Educated science! When do we want it?  After peer review!"  Others chanted, "Science says, ‘Dump Trump!’"  A small group of Republican hecklers marched and chanted, "Science trumps niggers!  Trump trumps niggers!"  I apologize for using that hateful word, but I consider accurately condemning Republican racism more important political correctness.  Please expect no more than a personal update tomorrow.  It’s a Wendy day, and there is much to do.

From Sen. Jeff Merkley: Keep It in the Ground

Climate change is already wreaking havoc on our farming, fishing and forests—and without dramatic action in the near future, it will get much worse. Our society is still dependent on fossil fuels, but affordable and reliable technology exists to gradually transition to clean energy and clean transportation. Making that transition happen smoothly should be a central priority of the federal government.

A key starting point is to stop the expansion of fossil fuel production on our public lands and waters. Rather than serving coal, oil, and gas companies, our public lands should serve the public and accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels and towards a cleaner energy future.

From Daily Kos: Donald Trump wants nothing more in the world than to build that "big, beautiful" nativist status symbol he promised at every campaign stop from the moment he announced his candidacy. Yes, indeedy, that border wall is emerging as so very important to the popular vote loser that his minions are willing to risk it all.

Despite the fact that Republicans have no path to securing enough GOP votes alone to pass Trump’s budget priorities—funding the wall, increased defense spending, and adding more border agents—the White House is preparing to wage what amounts to a game of chicken with Democrats in advance of the April 28 deadline, writes Politico:

With almost uniform Democratic opposition to nearly all of the Trump administration’s spending proposals, the fight could lead to a government shutdown next Friday — the day government spending expires, and right before the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency. Officials could also strike a one-week compromise, giving them more time for a broader agreement.

I warned that this was coming. As painful as it might be, Democrats cannot bow to Republican blackmail using the American people as hostages. There is only one response. RESIST!!

Ossoff’s Moderate Stance

Posted by at 2:37 pm  Politics

I trust you all know that Democrat Jon Ossoff has a chance to win a runoff election in Georgia’s 6th Congressional Distract in June.  I think his odds are good, but I fear that some of the same forces on the left that helped Trump in November may split the party, because they don’t consider Ossoff’s moderate stance ideologically pure enough.

0421ossoff

Another special election, another near upset for Democrats. Running against a slew of Republican competitors to replace Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price in Georgia’s 6th congressional district, Democrat Jon Ossoff fell just short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. He will now face the second-place finisher, the infamous Karen Handel, on June 20.

It’s a good sign for Democrats — and a good test case for the areas of the country where Hillary Clinton did unusually well. But they should be wary before using Ossoff’s campaign strategy as a template for the rest of the country. To win in districts President Trump dominated in 2016, Democrats would be well advised to adopt better class politics…

…Clinton’s campaign was by and for upper-class white-collar professionals, and Ossoff (perhaps wisely) followed her lead. His extremely bland campaign was about responsible governance, an end to corruption, and bipartisanship. In a wealthy, largely white Georgia suburb, that plays pretty well — as it probably will in similar places, like Texas’ 32nd and 7th districts, which Clinton actually won. Run a more competent and energetic version of her basic campaign strategy, and Democrats ought to be able to scoop up those seats without breaking a sweat. (Colin Allred, a former NFL player, has already declared for the 32nd, which Democrats did not even contest in 2016.)…

From <This Week>

Karen Handel is the woman-hater that helped transform Komen for the Cure into the Republican pawn that almost succeeded in defunding Planned Parenthood.  For more, I wrote about her here, here, and here.  A choice between Ossoff and Handel is no choice at all, but I certainly won’t call him the lesser of two evils.  That’s what many did with Clinton and look what happened.  Ossoff’s stance may be less than ideal, but he’s with us on virtually all the issues that matter.  That makes him a good, not a lesser evil.  He has to be low key about it because of his district.  Here he is with Rachel Maddow.

We need to take a realistic approach to taking America back from the Republican Reich.  Here in Oregon, Jeff Merkley can take a democratic socialist line and that will work.  In more conservative areas, our candidates must take a more moderate stance, with the understanding that moderate is a different path to a similar end, not a corporate sellout.  We must be flexible in order to…

Actually, the Fuhrer may be stalking his owner. I bet he want’s that open coach, because Vladimir Putin [R-RU] got it first. He’s too vain to accept that he could get his ass assassinated by Brits. That would be problematic, unless he took Pence and others with him. Winking smile RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Donald Trump have known each other for 16 years. In September 2015, reporters spotted a Make America Great Again hat in Brady’s locker. Only days before the presidential election, Trump claimed Tom Brady endorsed him:

…When the Patriots won the Super Bowl in February, Trump was thrilled to see his future hall of fame backers win again.

A number of Brady’s teammates announced they would not attend the traditional ceremony at the White House honoring the Super Bowl champs. They did not want to meet or be seen with Toxic Trump. Patriots team captain Devin McCourty made the case for his absence, saying, "Basic reason for me is I don’t feel accepted in the White House. With the president having so many strong opinions and prejudices I believe certain people might feel accepted there while others won’t."

…And today, on the day the celebration was supposed to take place, Brady is leaving Trump out to dry. The five time Super Bowl champion suddenly has better things to do.

Dang!! Thank you Holy Ellipsoid Orb! Now Brady isn’t the only one with deflated balls.

From NY Times: Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke dismissively about the State of Hawaii while criticizing a Federal District Court ruling last month that blocked the Trump administration from carrying out its ban on travel from parts of the Muslim world.

“I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the president of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and constitutional power,” Mr. Sessions said this week in an interview [Nazi delinked] on “The Mark Levin Show,” a conservative talk radio program.

0420maddow-warren

Last night, two progressive giants, Elizabeth Warren and Rachel Maddow got together on Rachel’s Show.  In my opinion, what they had to say was too important not to share, so here it is in three segments.

Warren: Trump poised to deliver knock-out blow to middle class

Senator Elizabeth Warren talks with Rachel Maddow about following the history of the erosion of the middle class in the United States and the fight to protect the working class from Donald Trump’s agenda.

Liz clearly demonstrates how the transition from democratic republic to Republican Reich has screwed and is screwing the middle class. I look forward to an Audible version of Warren’s book.

Warren: Turn heat up on Trump Russia case

Senator Elizabeth Warren talks with Rachel Maddow about the need for a special prosecutor and an independent commission investigating possible Trump campaign’s cooperation.

Liz is right that Russian interference with the election should not be partisan. However, it is, because Republicans prefer treason to loss of power. Republicans must go. All of them must go!

Warren: ‘Democracy can’t be a spectator sport’

Senator Elizabeth Warren talks with Rachel Maddow about why Americans can’t treat democracy as a ‘once-every-four-years horse race’ and what Democrats have to do to retake power in government.

The fight to take America back must begin yesterday and have more substance than mere opposition to Republicans.

From The New Yorker: Offering a stunningly blunt appraisal of the North Korean leader, Jared Kushner said on Tuesday that Kim Jong-un was a “totally unqualified person” who attained his position of power only through nepotism.

“Here you have a guy who has no government experience, and he’s in charge of the whole thing,” Kushner said, in an interview with Fox News. “It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of.”

Kushner noted that, instead of working his way up and acquiring the skills necessary to do his job, the North Korean leader had been given huge responsibilities and power “only because of family connections.”

Very observant Andy. Kushner is the "how to" expert on nepotism. RESIST!!

From Daily Kos: Trump might have won the elections (which again is controversial), but he couldn’t win the hearts of the people. We believed that at least his supporters who voted for him would be happy with his performance, but a new Pew poll confirmed Trump’s low approval ratings.

Compared to Obama’s 61% during his first term, Trump scored 39%, which is the lowest approval rating for any president in his first term.

It’s worse among the minorities. 81% Blacks and 78% Hispanics disapproved of him.

63% believe Trump is too impulsive.

The ratings are worse for Ryan, who has an approval rating of 29% and disapproval rating of 54%.

I like it, but the disapproval would be most gratifying if both were unemployed. RESIST!!

From NY Times: Bill O’Reilly’s reign as the top-rated host in cable news came to an abrupt and embarrassing end on Wednesday as Fox News forced him out after the disclosure of a series of sexual harassment allegations against him and an internal investigation that turned up even more.

Here are the results of our “Justice for Traitors” poll.  Politics Plus Polls are not scientific, because those who respond are not balanced according to demographic categories.   Therefore, we do not accurately reflect the makeup of the US population.  Nevertheless, our polls are usually factually accurate, and more often than not, they reflect thinking of the majority.

From NY Times: Jon Ossoff, a Democrat making his first bid for elective office, narrowly missed winning outright in a heavily conservative House district in Georgia on Wednesday, throwing a scare into Republicans in a special congressional election that was seen as an early referendum on President Trump.

Mr. Ossoff received 48.1 percent of the vote, just short of the 50 percent threshold needed to win the seat, and he will face Karen Handel, the top Republican vote-getter, in a June runoff.

A documentary filmmaker and former congressional staff member, Mr. Ossoff, 30, had hoped to avert a runoff in the Sixth District, a Republican-dominated section of the Atlanta suburbs that had been represented by Tom Price, who is now Mr. Trump’s health and human services secretary. But despite his financial advantage — Mr. Ossoff had raised $8.3 million, more than quadruple that of the next-closest candidate — and a highly energized liberal base, a majority was just out of reach in a district that has not sent a Democrat to Congress since the Carter administration.

Now we need to win in December. RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: In a major foreign-policy coup for the Trump Administration, North Korea offered to unconditionally abandon its nuclear program on Monday, after Mike Pence spent several minutes angrily squinting at the nation from just across the border.

Warning North Korea that the United States had jettisoned its policy of “strategic patience” and that “all options were on the table,” Pence fixed his steely glare on the isolated Communist nation and began furiously staring it down.

After Pence spent between five and six minutes demonstrating U.S. resolve by squinting indignantly, the government in Pyongyang released a statement indicating that North Korea’s nuclear ambitions were a thing of the past.
