To understand the full destructive impact of VS, just consider the Republican War on ______________.

From NY Times: One only has to read the Pentagon’s progress report on the Afghanistan war effort released last Monday to understand how pointless it is to keep 68,000 American troops there any longer. The mounting evidence makes it clear that they should be pulled out as soon as it can be done safely, instead of waiting until the end of 2014, the date set by the United States and NATO.

AMEN!

From Huffington Post: In the wake of the mass killing that claimed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school Friday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) made the case Sunday that the answer to preventing massacres in the U.S. is for more Americans to carry guns.

In effect he is saying that the way to keep children safe from motor vehicles is to send them to play on the Interstate.

Here are the results of our Secretary of State poll.  Because the respondents were not screened demographically, it is not necessarily representative of they US as a whole.  However it contains no internal bias.

And here are your comments on the poll.

Today (or yesterday), Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration because she felt it was too distracting and there is a lot to get done. Would she like the job, absolutely but she didn’t think the time was right for the country.

clip_image001

According to the news, that leaves John Kerry and McConjob and other Republican/Teabaggers have stated there won’t be a problem confirming him. Of course not because that leaves his senate seat open and Brown has already said he is revving up for the job. But there is another popular Democrat that, should he choose to run in the special election, has a financial advantage as Brown’s war chest is just under $500,000. Want to bet that Adelson and the Kochs take care of that little matter.

clip_image002

As for Bill Clinton, he has the personality for it and all his peccadilloes are out in the open, as far as we know. Not to mention, that as a former president, he has certain knowledge and skills that are useful. I certainly wouldn’t say that of Baby Bush!

clip_image003

It will be interesting to see who is tapped and how easily the confirmation goes.

Rice

She’s more than qualified, and Kerry should stay in the Senate so Brown won’t be elected from Massachusetts.

Rice, Kerry needs to stay in the Senate.

There has been a lot of negative press about Susan Rice lately. She has a huge monetary investment in the Keystone Pipeline. IMO, Bill Clinton can do no wrong.

I agree with Marva. Susan Rice should change her first name to Condoleeza Rice and she will breeze through the hearings.

Clinton is mesmerizing and he is friends with leaders that no one in the Bush administration could get close to (Kim Jong Il, was one example). Clinton would be a huge asset for any administration. It ought to go to Kerry. But Clinton would be my first choice.

Dennis Kucinich should run for president in 2016, along with Bernie Sanders. They’d get my vote, that’s certain.

Posted by Marva on December 1, 2012 at 10:54 am

I’ve suggested Susan change her first name to Condoleeza and the Republicans would be stupid enough to vote for her since all "those" people look alike to them. Of course, she can change it back to Susan and leave them wandering around with glazed looks wondering what happened.

Posted by Patty in reply to Marva on December 2, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Brilliant idea, Marva!

It was really closer than I expected.

I voted for Bill Clinton, because I think he is the best suited for the role.  While Susan Rice was clearly qualified, I had reservations because she tends to be an interventionist, and because she has deep financial ties to the Keystone XL Pipeline.  I preferred Kerry to Rice, because he tends to reject intervention in favor of diplomacy.  However, he has a lot od seniority that his state will lose, and I prefer not to give Bought Bagger Brown another shot at a Senate seat in a special election with gargantuan funding from Banksters, the Koch brothers, and other Plutocons and criminals.

In the new poll, be honest, because he knows.

What children can understand, criminal corporate farmers can too. They just care more about profit, and they know the Republican Party has their back.

From NY Times: The subject of deceptive restaurant menus took on new life last week when Oceana, an international organization dedicated to ocean conservation, released a report with the headline “Widespread Seafood Fraud Found in New York City.”

Using genetic testing, the group found tilapia and tilefish posing as red snapper. Farmed salmon was sold as wild. Escolar, which can also legally be called oil fish, was disguised as white tuna, which is an unofficial nickname for albacore tuna.

Every one of 16 sushi bars investigated sold the researchers mislabeled fish. In all, 39 percent of the seafood from 81 grocery stores and restaurants was not what the establishment claimed it was.

This is yet more proof of the importance of knowing what we eat, but Republicans want to cut and slash funding for the enforcement of even the inadequate safeguards we have.

From Think Progress: Rock Hill Herald, a newspaper in South Carolina, printed a large ad for a big gun sale in Rock Hill on the same page as its coverage of Friday’s massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. The ad, which touted Christmas discounts on Smith & Wesson assault rifles, ran in Saturday’s edition on pages A4-A5:

The list of these incidents boggles the mind and they seen almost unique to the US. The Republican culture of hate-based violence has to be a major contributor, but still, tighter gun control laws do reduce gun violence. It is not too soon to talk about gun laws. Furthermore, the NRA represents the arms industry, not their own membership, so NRA positions must be considered antithetical to America’s best interest.  Contrary to Republican lies, this is about sensible regulation, not taking away guns from law-abiding citizens.

Needless to say, the opposition to the ERA comes from Republicans.

From NY Times: The Obama administration said Friday that more than half the states had rejected its pleas to set up their own health insurance exchanges, dealing a setback to President Obama’s hopes that Republicans would join a White House campaign to provide health insurance to all Americans.

Friday was the deadline for states to notify the federal government of their plans, and administration officials had been hoping that Mr. Obama’s re-election would overcome resistance to the new health care law.

Federal officials said they knew of 17 states that intended to run their own exchanges, as Congress intended.

It strikes me as completely hypocritical that these Republican Governors, whose sniveling about perceived federal intrusion into issues they consider State rights never ends, should grant so much authority over their citizens’ health care to the federal government.

From Gallup: Thirty-two percent of Americans say they have had to put off medical care for themselves or their family in the past year due to the cost — the highest percentage since Gallup started tracking this annually in 2001. The percentage reporting they are putting treatment off is up significantly from the 19% found 12 years ago.

That’s a terrible place to be. I know, because I was there for several years, and still would be, were it not for Medicare.

Mathematically, Herr Snyder:Governors::Herr Scalia:Injustices. Republicans are trying to convert the 98% into just another third world country they can exploit with ease.

From NY Times: It’s important to make this point, because I keep seeing articles about the “fiscal cliff” that do, in fact, describe it — often in the headline — as a debt crisis. But it isn’t. The U.S. government is having no trouble borrowing to cover its deficit. In fact, its borrowing costs are near historic lows. And even the confrontation over the debt ceiling that looms a few months from now if we do somehow manage to avoid going over the fiscal cliff isn’t really about debt.

No, what we’re having is a political crisis, born of the fact that one of our two great political parties has reached the end of a 30-year road. The modern Republican Party’s grand, radical agenda lies in ruins — but the party doesn’t know how to deal with that failure, and it retains enough power to do immense damage as it strikes out in frustration.

Before I talk about that reality, a word about the current state of budget “negotiations.”

Yes we can do something. We can tax the 1%, close loopholes that benefit only the rich, outlaw offshore tax shelters, and end corporate welfare.

From The Daily Beast: The poll comes from the McClatchy News Service and was conducted by Marist. It asked respondents what they would and would not support as part of a grand fiscal bargain. The top-line results are typical: People first and foremost want to see taxes go up on the high end.

But here’s the good stuff. Breaking down results to Republican respondents only, their positions are as follows. By 47-37, they oppose letting the current payroll tax cut expire (an Obama position). By 68-26, they’re against cutting Medicare spending. By 61-33, they oppose cutting Medicaid spending (yes, Medicaid spending!). By 66-28, they’re against eliminating the home-mortgage interest deduction. By 72-25, they oppose eliminating the charitable contribution deduction. And by 56-44, less overwhelming but still very much a landslide in political terms, they just say no to raising the Medicare eligibility age. [emphasis added]

The Republican party fools rank and file Republicans into voting for them, while not representing their voters. Republicans govern exclusively for the benefit of millionaires, billionaires, and corporate criminals.

Since the Federal income tax was originally created by Republicans, raised for the first time by Republicans, and reestablished by Republicans, despite Republican lies to the contrary, perhaps we should rename the Federal income tax. Call it the Republican tax.

From MoveOn: This Lawmaker In Michigan Really Cuts Through The B.S. With Her GOP Coworkers

Whitmer is spot-on, but The Michigan Right to Screw Workers Law isn’t about what’s good for people, what’s good for Michigan, or what’s good for America. It’s about establishing a permanent, totalitarian Republican regime in which elections and the will of the people no longer matter.

From NY Times: It is a dark day for the rule of law. Federal and state authorities have chosen not to indict HSBC, the London-based bank, on charges of vast and prolonged money laundering, for fear that criminal prosecution would topple the bank and, in the process, endanger the financial system. They also have not charged any top HSBC banker in the case, though it boggles the mind that a bank could launder money as HSBC did without anyone in a position of authority making culpable decisions.

Clearly, the government has bought into the notion that too big to fail is too big to jail. When prosecutors choose not to prosecute to the full extent of the law in a case as egregious as this, the law itself is diminished. The deterrence that comes from the threat of criminal prosecution is weakened, if not lost.

If refusing to prosecute a criminal corporation due to fear of the damage it will do to the financial system, then the financial system is already far too damaged to permit its continuation unchanged. Especially if too big to fail is too big to jail, then too big to fail is too big to exist. Reinstate Glass-Steagall and break up the TBTF Banksters.

From MoveOn: What’s The Big Deal About Fracking? This. This Is The Big Deal

11frack

If you ask me, that’s a big fracking deal!

From NY Times: The cadet, Blake Page [the cadet who dropped out of West Point because of proselytism], detailed his complaint in an article for The Huffington Post, accusing officers at the academy of “unconstitutional proselytism,” specifically of an evangelical Christian variety.

On the phone on Sunday, he explained to me that a few of them urged attendance at religious events in ways that could make a cadet worry about the social and professional consequences of not going. One such event was a prayer breakfast this year at which a retired lieutenant general, William G. Boykin, was slated to speak. Boykin is a born-again Christian, and his past remarks portraying the war on terror in holy and biblical terms were so extreme that he was rebuked in 2003 by President Bush. In fact his scheduled speech at West Point was so vigorously protested that it ultimately had to be canceled.

Page said that on other occasions, religious events were promoted by superiors with the kind of mass e-mails seldom used for secular gatherings. “It was always Christian, Christian, Christian,” said Page, who is an atheist.

For the officers in charge of West Point to conduct such evangelism is a clear violation of the First Amendment, because they are establishing extreme right-wing pseudo-Christianity as the de facto religion of a government funded and operated service academy.  They need discipline for their failure to protect the Constitution of the United States.
