The New China Crisis

There is a new China crisis according to Republican state Representative Jarrod Martin.  It reminds me of my childhood.  My parents used to tell me, “Clean your plate.  There are starving children in in China.”  Too young to recognize the fallacy in that decree, I obeyed.  Of course, the children were still starving and I got fat.  Martin’s crisis is that China has too many smart children.

12martinDuring a rally in Columbus for Janet Porter’s Heartbeat Bill, which would criminalize abortion in the vast majority of cases, Ohio Republican State Representative Jarrod Martin came up with an economic rationale to pass the legislation: to help the U.S. compete with China.

Martin argued that since there are far more Chinese students taking AP classes than American students, the U.S. needs to ban abortion so women will have more children in order to rival China’s academic dominance…

…Martin was introduced by Porter, a radical dominionist and conspiracy theorist who had fetuses testify for the legislation…

Now, let’s examine this.  The problem is not that China has smarter kids.  It is that they offer more advanced education.  There, every child that demonstrates the aptitude to do the work gets advanced classes.  Here the quality of a child’s education generally depends on the wealth of the parents.  I’m not disparaging teachers here.  The do what they can with the tools available.   The solution is to provide more advanced classes to every child that can do the work.  But Martin isn’t really looking for a solution.  He just wants an excuse to insert the Republican Party between women and their doctors.

  1. He’s doing it wrong. He should demand that China start teaching creationism in its schools so their kids get dumbed down to our level.

  2. Too much intelligence is threatening to the power structure here. What they need is a work force — young, mostly ignorant, and desperate. Only then will we rival China.

What the right fails to examine is that a woman who wants an abortion does not want her baby or for some reason doesn’t feel she’s capable of raising it. The chances that that child will grow up in a loving, nurturing home are slim. The chances that the woman will go where ever she needs to go to get an abortion — whether medically sufficient or not — are broad.

Do I like the abortion solution? No. But it’s better than having a 4 year old child starved, beaten, tortured and raped all his/her life before they died.

    • Blue, I agree. I think every abortion that happens is a tragedy, but sometimes all of the alternatives are more tragic. It’s too personal a decision for government to make.

  3. Tom, you are absolutely correct about the Chinese and education. I used to work for a company that did business there and had the opportunity to visit many factories and such. The sad thing here is not the abortion issue but the fact that many American parents are not encouraging their kids to be competitive scholastically, but also the more frightening fact that the GOP wants to continue dumbing down our educational system so that our children are not prepared to compete academically. Our young people have a sense of entitlement that the should be given everything whether they deserve it or not.

  4. Asinine idiot–Abortion is the cure for dumbed down educational systems??? I still am looking for them to try and identify why abortion seems to be the solution too many times; Seems to me a reasonable question .. In my not so damm humble opinion–its the economy–no jobs=no way to support another child ? Women poorly educated , at best not able to obtain good jobs—-I could say more–such as –Men who are also unable to support a family—Jobs !!– ( BTW—IF it matters—-I had 5 -have 7 grand and 14 great grands—) I understand what makes women choose the tragedy of Abortion.as well as what it takes to raise and support children–kids gotta eat before they go to school- they need clothes and shelter–before they can learn—
This jackass doesnt have a clue–
Get tired of Idiot men–talking about what they know nothing about.

    • Now Phyllis, not all men are idiots and some of us know what we’re talking about and therefore support your rights.

  5. Yeah, that’s just what we need in this world – more kids. We can’t sustain the ones we have.

    • Lisa, I think it’s that we, as a society, aren’t kids the resources they need, Many individual parents do, but some don’t have them to give.
