Yesterday I posted Republican Bigot Caught Lying about the hypocrisy of Peter King (R-NY) and his witch hunt singling out Muslim Americans to target for his investigation of terrorism.  While King was damning Muslims, events continued to demonstrate that the greater threat to American security is terrorism from the extreme right.

Lieutenant Col. David Cogdell helps Alaska Governor Sarah Palin test out the Engagement Skills Trainer at Camp Buehring, Kuwait July 24. Palin visited the Soldiers of 3rd Battalion 297th Infantry Regiment Alaska National Guard to learn about their mission in Kuwait.Militia activist Schaeffer Cox and four associates who reportedly stockpiled weapons were arrested on Thursday for allegedly conspiring to kill multiple Alaska State Troopers and a federal judge.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that the group — Cox, Lonnie. G. Vernon and his wife Karen Vernon, as well as Coleman Barney of North Pole and Michael Anderson — were taken into custody by state police. All five face several state charges, including "conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, conspiracy to commit arson, misconduct involving weapons in the third degree, hindering prosecution in the first degree and tampering with evidence," according to a press release by the Alaska State Troopers.

Only one of the individuals, Lonnie G. Vernon, has been charged on the federal level so far. He’s alleged to have threatened to murder U.S. District Court Judge Ralph R. Beistline from on or about Feb. 4, continuing through Feb. 16.

U.S. Attorney Karen L. Loeffler, the top federal prosecutor in Alaska, confirmed to TPM on Thursday that Vernon was the only individual facing federal charges. "I can’t really comment beyond anything else of what is publicly charged — Mr. Vernon is charged with threatening to kill the judge and his family, and he was arrested on that. Everything else, all the other arrests, are state."… [emphasis added]

These defendants are part of the Sovereign Citizens movement, a right wing terrorist group.  They are only loosely linked to the Republican party, because they and a significant part of the InsaniTEA wing of the party believe they are subject only to English Common Law, and any Federal, State or Local law that is not supported in Common law does not apply to them.  Tim McVeigh had deep ties to these groups, and Republicans celebrated the anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing, by scheduling open carry events in and near Washington on that date.  Governor Perry (R-TX) has advocated several of their ideas,as they are often secessionist, like Todd Palin’s Alaska Independence Party.

Rachel Maddow connects the dots between this and other right wing terrorism.

As I have said so many tomes before, Al Dubya is a greater threat than Al Qaeda.

  1. Keep on exposing the lies, Tomcat.

  2. What else can be expected? After all King is a Republican. However for all of us who follow your postings and those of others, it is not enough to cluck, cluck, shake our heads and post our disappointment and disapproval here. We must ALL write these damned assholes who have been elected and are abusing their powers and privileges. Email and post office addresses for all of these elected turkeys are extremely easy to find. Now I am not naive enough to believe that Bitch McConell or John Bonehead actually reads my emails to them, but someone in their offices has to follow up on the mail that they receive.

    • Charles, I agree with the caveat that staffers routinely trash complaints from people who are not their constituents. I think it best to focus on our own Senators and Rep.

  3. Throw Cox and all the other militia idiots into a leaky boat and set them adrift out in the middle of the Bering Sea – during an ice storm.

  4. I agree these people should have their day in court, but I disagree that McVeigh did the OK bombing
on his own…it is believed that there was a third conspiritor and that McVeigh was a manchuran candidate.
It is further believed that our own government {black-ops CIA} did that bombing and the 9/11 bombings just to fear monger the people so they would have no objections to all the laws they planned to put into effect to make us slaves…IMHO and readings of the conspiracy sites. I don’t abide killing people you don’t agree with but the government doesn’t seem to have that same rule.

    • Welcome EarthSpirit! πŸ™‚

After extensive study of the matter, I have been unable to find sufficient reliable data to conclude that 9/11 was an inside job. However, I have found sufficient evidence to conclude that the Bush Regime allowed the attack to happen to provide justification for wars and stripping the rights from US citizens. I don’t know enough about Oklahoma City conspiracy theories to comment.

  5. People are beginning to FINALLY push back against the republican insanity, yet they still keep getting elected. If you are making less than $200,000 a year, you are OUT OF YOUR MIND voting for a republican (though personally I wouldn’t vote for one if I made a MILLION a year). We need to push back against these lying thieves whenever possible. To the GOP; Death by a thousand cuts!!

  6. A good post. While radical Islam is very real and a cause for concern, I do not believe that the King hearings are the most constructive way to address the problem. I also think that other terrorist forces (i.e, sovereign citizens, anti-abortion violence) are a more immediate threat.
