As I have said before, Bill Maker is so funny that I forgive his evangelical atheism, because he’s right on virtually everything else.  Here he interviews Gloria Steinem.

In a wide ranging — and alternately serious and funny — interview with HBO host Bill Maher, feminist icon Gloria Steinem addressed the myth that a woman can “have it all,” saying that is impossible for both men and women.

Steinem is promoting her new book, “My Life on the Road,” saying that it where she has spent most of her time.

“The road used to be a male province for no good reason. It should be everybody’s place, ” she explained. “But also the road was thought to be more dangerous. But, statistically speaking, home is the most dangerous place for a woman,” she added, alluding to domestic violence…

I have to disagree with one thing.  One of my functions with SDS in New York Coty in the 1960s was to liaise with other organizations, which is how I came to know several famous people.  In that role, I met Gloria on a couple of occasions, and contrary to what she now says, she has mellowed with age and now seems quite likeable.

  1. She remains awesome.  Thanks TC

  2. I feel both are awesome! She looks great @81 too!  Great video.

    Thanks, Tom.

  3. You know what Gloria would say?  "This is what 81 looks like.  We've been lying for so mong that everyone has forgotten."  And in a way she'd be right, although people do are differently.  I can look at her ans see 81 – a beautiful 81.

You are fortunate to have met her indeed – but I do agree that women in general get more – I would say liberal or progressive rather than radical – as we age – simply because we are not idiots, and the longer we live, the more we see how rigged the system is against us, and then the more we want change.  Now that does not mean we can't or don't get more GRACIOUS as we age.

What sounded like a heavey metal rap band kept cutting across the video and I had to stop it, darn.

  4. I saw her on "Charlie Rose," not long ago…she still rocks!

  5. I couldn't get the video, but I have long admired Steinem.  It infuriates me when I hear a young woman disparage feminists, they have no idea how fortunate they are because of women like her.

  6. Gloria Steinem is amazing and just as sharp witted as in the early days of feminism. She is just as powerful, but in a different way, mainly because of what she and her fellow feminists (the mad 12) have accomplished in the past 50 (!) years. You call it "mellowed", or more likeable, TomCat, but I think that when you you met her in her early activist days, mellow or likeable is the last thing feminists could afford to be if they wanted to accomplish anything at all. Psychologically speaking women have the tendency to want to be liked, to smile more and to act submissive more quickly when threatened then men do. From an evolutionary standpoint a good way to survive if you're the physically weaker sex and you have children to protect. This tendency still is with us, even if no longer necessary in modern society and the early feminists had to put it completely aside and mimic male behavior in the male world they wanted to change. Now they have done that in Western society and have established themselves they can let go of that and show their "mellow" and "likeable" side too.
Sadly feminism hasn't changed all that needs to be changed and is far from finished: "young women [ ] they’re mad as hell because they’re graduating in debt and they’re going to earn a million dollars less in their lifetime to pay it back." And if they really want to succeed in male corporate business, they have to become like the men there: aggressive, nail hard, heartless bitches.

  7. Thanks all!!  Hugs!!  I'm hurrying!!

  8. When Mr. Steinam started in the 60's, I was old enough to realize that women were equal to men and followed her quite a lot. Those days are far in the rear view mirror and I can't remember much of them. They say if you can remember the 60's and 70's, you weren't doing it right. LOL! Maybe that's why I can't remember most of those days!
