Today’s forecast high is a glorious 75°.  TC is doing a kitty happy dance!  I’m waiting for the nurse from Providence to arrive for my annual health care evaluation.  (She came and now I’m waiting again.)  Store to Door will be delivering groceries, so I have a busy day on tap.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took m3 3:01 (average 5:18).  To do it click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Upworthy: So how do you respond when someone says, "If gay marriage, why not polygamy?"

Bubba Bagger need not worry about polygamy. He can’t even spell it.  On the other, I’m not sure.  Bubba says “BA-A-A-A-A-A.”

From Daily Kos: Well the roosters are coming home to roost. For those of you who were waiting for an event to turn on this man physically, it has. From the NJ Ledger.

Christie booed mercilessly — twice — at the Haskell

OCEANPORT — It was one long happy celebration at Monmouth Park for the great American Pharoah’s latest victory. At least, that is, until Gov. Chris Christie stepped into the Winner’s Circle to present the trophy.

And then, the record crowd of 60,983 booed.

Long.

Loud.

Sustained.

Any day PIGnocchio gets booed is a good day for sanity.

From The New Yorker: Late in the afternoon on Tuesday, Fox News Channel issued what it called a definitive list of the top ten narcissists in America.

The ten narcissists, winnowed down from a longer list of seventeen, will be presented to the nation in a special prime-time broadcast Thursday night.

Almost immediately after Fox released the list there was an outcry over its choices, as the seven narcissists who were omitted complained that they were easily as egotistical and self-absorbed as those who made the cut.

Andy should add that Faux Noise’s top ten narcissists are also America’s bottom ten sphincters.

  1. 5:44 average still 5:18.  Looks a lot like The Cat That Tried To Kill Me.  But – you're not a cannibal …

Apropos of thinking beyond a particular Presidential candidate to what his or her election would mean for the Supremes, which was brought up some days ago, Daily Kos elections points out that the DLCC has launched a special fundraising effort dubbed "Unrig the Map" to increase midterm turnout, then adds:  "But it's easy to announce plans like this. The real question is whether the DGA can make gains in places like Michigan, Ohio, and Florida in the critical year of 2018, when voters will elect the governors who oversee congressional line drawing following the 2020 Census. McAuliffe says, "This effort is the first time the party has really taken a serious effort at winning these races," but that's just not true—Democrats tried hard last year. Can a newfound commitment (and increased fundraising) turn the tide on midterm apathy? We'll see."

From an email from "Make It Work" – "What has twenty arms and hasn’t told us what they’ll do to help women and families?  If you guessed 2 ½ octopuses… well, you’re not wrong, but the answer we’re actually looking for is the ten Republican candidates for President who will be debating live THIS Thursday."

Upworthy – If only one had to be able to spell it to be able to do it!  I'm sure Bubba can't spell "ammosexual," either.

Daily Kos – This deserve more than a brief mention in a comment, so I'm glad you used it.  It is just way too much fun!

New Yorker – Perfect.  Maybe, TC, you should have put "bottom" in quotes though.

Cartoon – As Moses (the real one) said, "The last time I talked to a Bush, I ended up in the desert for forty years!"

  2. 3:27  Pretty puddy tat! Be nice TC.

    • 3:24  Hey look.  It's TomCat in the puzzle and he looks pissed!

    • 2:53  . . . just in case a certain Puddy Tat deprived of food for several days gets a notion of cattibalism.

    • Geez!  I'm pissed!  Jig Zone starved me like an evil Sasquatch for days, and when we finally get a puzzle, it's a cousin, not food.  And now my poor cousun is immersed in Bigfoot odor. devil

      • Glad to hear there would be no cattibalism.  As far as Bigfoot or Sasquatch odour, it is as sweet as a mountain meadow after a gentle rain shower so cus' will get lots of cuddles and scritches.  Think mega purring!

  3. Upworthy ~ He's right. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

Daily Kos ~ Improper prior planning by his team. Did they think the victims of Sandy would look kindly at him after his shoddy treatment of them?

New Yorker ~ It must have been hard to pick out the most egotistical. They all have pretty swollen heads but Trump is definitel #1 in that area.

Cartoon ~ The only good Bush is the  Burning Bush.of Moses.

  4. My response always was committed loving monogamous relationships vs. not.

Both stories are worth sharing far and wide IMO.

So many groups have been soliciting questions to send to the moderators–I suspect none of them will get used since net neutrality, living wages, etc. are not what the 10 corporate mouthpieces want to discuss.

Cartoon: forgot which side of his mouth to use?

  5. GHW Bush was just as bad as all of the rest of them! Prescott was a war monger, too, wasn’t he? He ran with Hitler or one of them, I think.
Anyway, as the other responses said the only good Bush is the Burning Bush!

    • Roosevelt threatened him with prison and confiscation of his wealth to make him stop trading war materials to Hitler after the US was at war.

  6. On another past topic–just got an email announcing: New Hampshire DEFUNDS Planned Parenthood

    • Yes, I just put that on yesterday's lead great minds, y'know.  I don't know whether NH is bicameral, I don't know the procedures for overriding a veto, so I don't know whether it is veto proof, but I would HOPE Maggie Hassan would veto it.

      • en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire_General_Court

The General Court of New Hampshire is the bicameral state legislature of the U.S. state of New Hampshire.

    • Well, actually the Rethuglicans voted to create MORE unnecessary and unwanted and preventable pregnancies …

And MORE unnecessary and unwanted and treatable infections …

And MORE unnecessary and unwanted and avoidable miseries …

But then that pretty much sums up the Rethuglican Platform

    • Does Maggie Hassan have any veto power over the NH Executice Council?

  7. We have had a refreshing day today.  High temperature 17 C (61 F) with rain.  We could smell that rain all day . . . very nice.  It was absolutely pouring at 7 pm but stopped about 8 pm and cleared right up.  High tomorrow about 24 C (75 F) by me.

Puzzle — 2:53  . . . just in case a certain Puddy Tat deprived of food for several days gets a notion of cattibalism.

Upworthy — I agree with him.  They are not the same at all!  But what do you expect from the Republicanus/Teabaggerum who like to equate homosexuality with beastiality and pedophelia?  They are a bunch of ignorant and sick bastards.

Daily Kos — . . . and didn't he get booed!  Although Christie didn't appear to break stride at the time, I'll bet he was pissed off later.

The New Yorker — "Andy should add that Faux Noise’s top ten narcissists are also America’s bottom ten sphincters."  So true Puddy Tat!  Rachel had a piece on the Faux selection process which they altered.  Apparently there was a tie between Kasich and Perry on the NBC/Wall Street Journal so Faux dumped that poll and used the Quinnipiac poll.  Kasich is in and Perry is at the children's table none too happy.  Talk about a bruised ego!

Cartoon — I had forgotten about that.  The only good Bush is a dead Bush, politically speaking.

  8. I am happy for your good weather.  We are under flood watches again, wish we could send some of the rain out West where they need it.

Upworthy:  This is one of the most sensible articles about same sex marriage that I have seen.  I am so sick of hearing about "why not polygamy, etc".  Those are just shadow dancing for the real prejudice that exists.

Daily Kos:  Let us hope that Christie will be booed in more places!

The New Yorker:  Love Andy.  I added him to my Facebook page, so any of my conservative friends who follow my timeline get to see him too!

Cartoon:  He might have looked good if he had not spawned Dubya.

  9. UPdate on Cousin Phillip:  I am posting this to thank all of you who are praying for him.  He became conscious this morning, they did a CT scan and saw that they had left a sponge in his chest, had to do surgery again to remove it.  Fortunately, he still was conscious after that anesthetic wore off.  He is not talking but will blink his eyes to commands.  No prognosis yet on anything.  Please keep him in your thoughts.

    • Good to hear that things are looking up a bit Edie.  All of you, but especially Phillip, have been in my thoughts and prayers daily and will continue so.

    • Sure glad they figured it out–hopefully recovery goes as it always should have now!

    • Lots of prayers still going up for your cousin Phillip and you all Edie – that sponge being left inside him is AWFUL!!!  They should count them in AND out – that is standard hospital practice the world over – I am utterly scandalised!  Please God he will recover normally now.

    • Agree with Pat A on the sponge!  I cannot come up with enough SFW words to address that, and I am not going to tarnish TC's blog with NSFW (today 😉 )  Sure, it's a relief that it was simple to extract, but how much damage did it do in the meantime?  Grrrr!  Still praying of course.

      • Thanks, Joanne, I agree, but they are explaining that since they did three surgeries on him in one day, someone just goofed.  I don't like the explanation very much.

    • Damn!  From what little I knew about surgical proceuure, sponges are supposed tpo be counter to prevent such a mishap.  From a malpractice perspective, that's huge.  Even if he survives, there is no way to undo tha permanent damage they caused him, such as the damage they did to his hands.

Of course, I'm still praying for the best possible outcome.

      • General background

For major surgeries, sponges typically are counted at least twice (once before and once after surgery) AND by two people counting them simultaneously out loud AND then reported to the surgeon in charge that the count is correct.  At least way back when I was practicing.  (They can be counted more often if multiple layers/cavities are closed at different stages – but always at least twice.)

A sponge or instrument left inside a patient is a classic res ipsa loquitur "the thing speaks for itself"

While res ipsa loguitur is not a direct cause of action, it is a cause of evidence.  And for malpractice one has to show not only negligence (which res ipsa loquitur does) – but also damages.

        • Thanks, Sudanese.  I will try to remember to tell his wife this when he is really out of danger.  She is a physical and emotional wreck right now.

      • Thanks, TC.  Yes, all sponges are supposed to be counted.  HIs wife is so grateful that he is conscious that she is not thinking that way now, but his daughter is.  He is still not out of the woods, but we are so happy that he is finally conscious.

        • As it sounds like you're doing, I would encourage everyone to focus their energy on his getting better.  Negative thoughts, "karma" or w/e one cares to call it just doesn't do anyone any good.

There'll be time enough for thinking about other issues way down the road.

  10. I would love to see your happy dance, TomCat. I hope you're still as nimble on your four feet after all that waiting today.

Upworthy: I can't see videos with a connection as slow as this, but all videos by John Corvino put bubbas in their place, especially those that ask stupid questions like these.

Daily Kos: I would have loved to have heard a short snippet of that booing of PIGnoccio; it would have made my day. Sadly it's all wasted on Christie; his head is solid concrete – note the "solid"- nothing get's through to him.

The New Yorker: Andy's kicking in open doors; the GOP makes it all so easy for him, doesn't it? You need to a narcissist if you want to become a politician, but you need to bring an extra dose of egotism and self-absorption to make it to a Republican. Add a sphincter and you're a presidential hopeful and with the blessing of Faux News you may even make it to the debates. It's an amazingly simple recepy, really.

  11. Upworthy – Q-  if homosexual marriage why not polygamy?  Answer – because two consenting adults make a marriage, not twelve, twenty-two or sixty-two!

Daily Kos – praise the Lord, I have been waiting for something like that to happen – if only it would happen with more of them!

New Yorker – Andy is painfully accurate again!

  12. Christie deserves all the "Boos".

  13. Some good news:
Texas ID Law Called Breach of Voting Rights Act

By Erik Eckholm, New York Times

A federal appeals panel ruled Wednesday that a strict voter identification law in Texas discriminated against blacks and Hispanics and violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — a decision that election experts called an important step toward defining the reach of the landmark law.

S.E.C. Approves Rule on C.E.O. Pay Ratio

By Peter Eavis, New York Times

After a long delay and plenty of pushback from corporate America, the Securities and Exchange Commission approved on Wednesday a rule that would require most public companies to regularly reveal the gap between the compensation of the chief executive and the pay of the rest of their employees.

  14. Thanks all!  Hugs!
